A Letter from the Executive Director Thank you for supporting the Joliet Park District through this crazy time. The COVID-19 pandemic devastated the Joliet Park District. The government mandated Executive Order in March 2020 forced the Joliet Park District to close 15 facilities, 70+ community parks and cancel countless programs and special events throughout Joliet, including the 2020 Taste of Joliet. Over 160,000 Joliet residents, from early childhood users to seniors, did not have access to their recreation center, special recreation programs, fitness facility, or preschool classes. The Joliet Park District is unique in that we only receive 30% of our funding from taxes – the remaining 70% comes from user fees. As a result, mandated cancellations and closures make operations extremely difficult. We have applied for a number of federal assistance programs, only to find out that as a government agency, we do not qualify. For over 99 years, the Joliet Park District has played a vital role in providing recreation opportunities to our community. We take enormous pride in our ability to provide quality recreational programming and events that promote healthy, active lifestyles to enhance the quality of life for our community members, and we believe that the services we provide are more important now than ever. We hope that you and those you love are safe and healthy, and that we will see you soon. Brad Staab Executive Director Board of Commissioners Commissioners are elected by Joliet Park District residents to serve staggered terms without compensation. They have the responsibility to develop policies which provide direction for the operation of the parks, facilities and recreation programs. The Board also hires the Executive Director, who in turn hires the staff which manages the various departments of the Joliet Park District. The Board of Commissioners meets on the fourth Monday of each month at Inwood Athletic Club, 3000 W. Jefferson Street, at 5 pm. The public is invited to attend. Welcome to Little Sprouts! Our Little Sprouts program is dedicated to bringing children and nature together. We will offer experiences typically found in child-centered learning centers; however, what is special about Little Sprouts is that these experiences will be focused through daily interaction with nature, animals, and plant life. Research has found that children who spend more time in nature pay attention better, think more clearly, and are able to cope more effectively with stress. The nature curriculum is based on seasonal changes. Topics reflect current events in the natural world and provide the basis for daily outdoor discovery plus: creative arts, large & small motor skill development, math & manipulative activities, natural science exploration, language experiences and construction play. Register for the 2021-2022 school year at Pilcher Park Nature Center only! Little Sprouts is more appropriate for children whose families are looking for discovery-based learning, rather than traditional lessons that are scheduled and confined by curriculum objectives. Natural themes and materials are incorporated through indoor and outdoor activities. “Children who do not experience nature won’t grow up to cherish or protect it.” – The Trust for Public Land Little Sprouts Early Learning Center Our program operates on a nine-month annual tuition basis, paid monthly. Classes begin in September and are limited to 15 students on a first-come, first-served basis. Children, ages 3 – 5, must be fully toilet trained. All registration is completed in person at Pilcher Park Nature Center, 2501 Highland Park Drive. At the time of registration, you will need: proof of residency (current utility bill or RDC), copy of county-recorded birth certificate, and credit or debit card information for the automatic monthly electronic funds transfer, unless payment is made in full at time of registration. An electronic funds transfer form must be completed. There will be a full month (non- refundable/non-transferable) deposit due at the time of registration which will be applied to the learning center fees.
