PRINCE GEORGE’S COMMUNITY COLLEGE OWL SCHOLARS 2021 ON-LINE SCHEDULE REGISTRATION OPENS APRIL 1, 2021 The Prince George’s Community College - Owl Scholars Camp supports the retention of grade-level skills in preparation for the rigor of the upcoming school year. Courses also engage students in activities that stimulate their career interests ~ all in a virtual environment. All 2021 Owl Scholars courses are offered online using Blackboard. Each class is taught synchronously (live and interactive sessions with a faculty member). BASIC REQUIREMENTS: PHONE/COMPUTER/LAPTOP • Access to Internet • #2 Pencil • Internet Browser (Firefox or Chrome • PGCC Username and Password • Pen • Scissors • Paper • Crayons REQUIRED PRE-ASSESSMENT (LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH) A pre-assessment is required for 2nd through 8th grade Language Arts and Math students. The pre-assessment helps to ensure our students receive the appropriate level of instruction. Parents will receive login information via email. • In addition, you will receive information on completing Parental Permission/Responsibility Form REGISTRATION – ONLINE USING PGCC OWL LINK Space is limited! ✓ July 20 for classes starting between August 9 and 16 REGISTER STUDENTS BASED ON THEIR 2020/2021 GRADE LEVEL • REFUND POLICY Refunds will be issued if Students are dropped ten days prior to course start date. If a course is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, refunds are automatically mailed/credited within ten days of official cancellation. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT All classes meet online via Blackboard Critical Thinking and Games of Strategy Grades 2-8 $60 (Includes $30 fee) This course will assist campers in developing their critical thinking skills. Developing these skills will assist in all areas of learning, from elementary through College. Activities will include: strategy games, knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, synthesis and evaluation. YTH-434 Language Arts: Elementary Grades 2/3 $100 (includes $50 fee) Students in this course read a wide range of stories and describe the lesson or intention of a story. Interactive activities allow students to describe characters in a story and how their actions contributed to events. The skills in this class reinforce the rules of spoken and written English. Faculty guided activities in this course allow students to practice effective communication skills by listening, asking questions, sharing ideas, and building on the ideas of others. Students will gather information from books, articles, and online sources to build understanding of a topic and give a class presentation on a topic or tell a story using relevant facts and details and speaking clearly. 3
SYN# 75190 Monday-Friday July 5-16 10am-12noon YTH-434 Language Arts: Elementary Grades 4/5 $100 (includes $50 fee) This interactive online course allows students to hone their critical thinking skills by comparing and contrasting stories that deal with similar themes or topics, explaining how authors use reasons and evidence to support their points or ideas. Students will locate an answer or solve a problem quickly, drawing on information from multiple books, articles, or online sources. Faculty guided activities also allow students to acquire and use new vocabulary, understand contextual clues, and figurative language. Students will give a class presentation on a topic or tell a story, introducing relevant facts and details in a clear and logical order. SYN# 76192 Monday-Friday July 5-16 10am-12noon YTH-443 Language Arts: Middle Grades 6/7 $100 (includes $50 fee) This virtual experience allows the sixth grader to hone their skills with research, reason, and discussion. Students in this class will trace and evaluate the argument and claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from those that are not reasonable. Faculty guided activities include opportunity to interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, write arguments to support claims with reasons and evidence. Their work culminates with an informative/explanatory narrative to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences. All activities in this course provide a platform for the demonstration of standard English grammar and usage in writing and speech. SYN# 75197 Monday-Friday July 5-16 10am-12noon YTH-443 Language Arts: Middle Grades 8 $100 (includes $50 fee) This online course provides the middle school student with the opportunity to practice the art of collaborative discussions with diverse partners using analysis of a story or drama. Students will revisit the meaning of words and phrases, analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds in poems, stories, and dramas. Faculty guided activities allow students to demonstrate their competency with analysis by comparing and contrasting written media to an audio, video, or multimedia version of the same content. All activities in this course provide chances for the student to gain confidence with writing, providing arguments, while supporting claims with reasons and evidence. Mathematics July 19 through 30 Faculty will modify the course content to align with the results of the students’ academic preassessment. All mathematics courses include activities to build confidence and minimize math anxiety. YTH-448 Basic Math: Grades 2/3 $100 (includes $50 fee) Students in this course will review the properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division, fluently multiply and divide, solve problems involving the four operations and identify patterns in arithmetic, develop understanding of fractions as numbers, to include showing fractions on a number line. Faculty guided activities reinforce skill development in the areas of measurement, estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and making a distinction between linear and area measures. SYN75201 Monday-Friday July 19-30 10am-12noon YTH-448 Basic Math: Grades 4/5 $100 (includes $50 fee) Faculty guided activities support the students’ use of place value up to one million, fluently add and subtract multi-digit numbers, multiply and divide whole and mixed numbers, add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, compare order and describe decimals to the hundredths place with or without using the symbols. SYN# 75203 Monday-Friday July 19-30 10am-12noon YTH-448 Basic Math: Grades 6/7 $100 (includes $50 fee) This online course provides the middle school student with the opportunity to practice core competencies such as proportional relationships, operations with rational numbers, expressions and equations, geometrical figures and statistics, rational numbers, space and spread, reasoning with ratios and rates. Faculty guided activities include dissecting word problems, using positive and negative numbers to describe quantities and understanding the order and absolute values of positive and negative numbers. SYN# 75205 Monday-Friday July 19-30 10am-12noon YTH-449 Pre-Algebra (Grades 6-8) $100 (includes $50 fee) This course provides students who have taken Pre-Algebra the opportunity to practice core competencies such as solving equations quickly and accurately, writing equations to solve word problems, integers, one-step equations, inequalities and equations, graphs and functions, percent, probabilities, variables and exponentiation. In this program, we will build unique art projects that utilize digital apps that lets everyone express their creativity. Participants will engage with live instructors who will inspire them to create fun and exciting art projects using a wide variety of art apps. No prior experience necessary, all skill levels welcome. Up your game and learn what it takes to be a Minecraft Youtuber or Twitch streamer! This digital video-focused program is designed for kids who have some prior experience playing Minecraft and who want to make and stream videos. During this program you will direct, edit 6
and produce videos which would be appropriate for display on various video streaming platforms. Participants will produce videos and learn to use Streamlabs OBS. By the end of the program, you will have created a series of Minecraft Let's Play videos, video overlays, learn voice-over techniques and have the option to share a live video with the other participants in the program. In the Science of Amusement Parks program, participants will work with instructors to learn the basic science and engineering behind roller coasters and other amusement park rides. We will use Minecraft to create virtual rides and to experience the 7
thrill of the turns, loops and drops. Have you ever wanted to learn what it takes to become the next Youtuber or Twitch streamer? This Digital Video program is designed for participants who want to learn how to make and edit video content for the Internet. During this program you will direct, act in, edit and produce recorded and streamed videos appropriate for sharing on YouTube and Twitch. You will be provided hands-on experience by our expert instructors with sophisticated video editing software and Streamlabs OBS. By the end of the program, participants will have created a series of videos, which they can share with others as we work through the program. For beginners, you can jump right in and use your creativity and don't need to worry about the code. For the more experienced participants you can learn the built-in scripting programming language called "Game Maker Language". Highlights include the use of a hands-on game design lab where participants design, customize, construct and test their creations. Participants will learn the basics of web design using WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) design tools; they will be provided instruction on using graphics and videos as well. By the end of the program, participants will have designed a series of web pages that reflect their personal interests and hobbies. No prior experience necessary. All skills levels welcome. 8

Produce your own immersive experiences, Obby’s, and platformer-style games. With Roblox as your engine, your game is only limited by your imagination. During the program, you will learn how to build 3D adventures, races, and obstacle courses. Do you wonder what roles are involved in creating a video? In this program, you'll learn how to make your very own videos from start to finish and learn how to share them with family and friends. Working with an iPhone or iPad participants will learn to create short skits and scenes with iMovie. The program will focus on basic filmmaking skills, how to direct and edit video scenes, as well as provide an introduction to acting. An iOS device is required. If you enjoy Minecraft, this program was created to teach participants about these exciting STEM topics using Minecraft as the laboratory to design, craft and test out experiments through virtual simulations. In our physics lessons, participants will learn about the science of kinetic and potential energy, speed, acceleration, and gravity. In our Minecraft physics lab participants work toward building the ultimate scientific laboratory and work in our virtual campground to build and test physics theories with science-themed builds. Our chemistry lessons will teach participants about atoms, molecules and elements. The chemistry labs will explore the periodic table and create tests to see how the chemicals react - participants will create compounds using molecules and focus on "reactions" by creating things like sparklers, glowsticks, and floating balloons. The program day will be broken into two sections, one spent working on learning about science and engineering using Minecraft, and the other dedicated to learning chemistry concepts. No prior experience is necessary! All skill levels are welcome. Use readers theater scripts to role play characters and demonstrate economic and personal finance concepts. Learn fun money facts through simulations and games. Explore financial concepts including wants and needs, earning money, banking, credit, saving, and investing to help prepare for your future financial security. PRINCE GEORGE’S COMMUNITY COLLEGE OWL SCHOLARS REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR RETURNING PGCC STUDENTS If you have previously enrolled in a course at Prince George’s Community College (Bubbler, Bobber, etc.) you will be required to log in to Owl Link before you can register. Go to www.pgcc.edu and select Owl Link If you know the students User ID and password information, select the Login prompt in the upper left corner. Then follow steps, 8, 9, and 10 below. INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW PGCC STUDENTS 1. Go to www.pgcc.edu and select Owl link 2. Go to “Workforce Development & Cont. Ed. Students” 3. Click “Enroll and Register” 4. Click on Create your account. Complete all the demographic information (required fields are noted by a red*) and check the box at the bottom of the page before hitting the SUBMIT button You may skip the field marked social security number 5. After receiving the confirmation e-mail, make note of the User ID and temporary password 6. Go back to the Owl Link Welcome screen, click “Log In’ and use the User ID and temporary password that you received by e-mail. 7. Change your password to something you will remember and repeat steps 3-4; then click “Register for Courses” 8. Find the field for Course Code Number and type in the course number. Be sure to add a space between the letters and numbers. (Example: YTH-111). To pull all the courses at once type in YTH and hit enter 9. We are pleased to work with you to provide an enriching experience during this troubling time. The College’s Responsibilities. The College will provide instruction and guidance through the Camp’s meetings and sessions. The dates and times will be provided. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities. You are responsible to pay the full tuition before your student may begin the program. You are responsible to have your student attend online at the scheduled time. You are responsible to provide the hardware, software, and connectivity for participating in the Camp. The College is pleased to provide technical support where possible and will try to work through any problems, but the College will not be responsible for your student’s connectivity. Recordings Prohibited, Except by PGCC. Meetings or sessions of the Camp may not be recorded by you, your student, or anyone under your control. In compliance with Maryland law, PGCC hereby informs you that PGCC may record the sessions for students to reference later as a study aid or refresher, in its sole discretion.
