REGION OF MURCIA´S CULTURAL CALENDAR Summer 2012 JUMILLA 2012 MUSIC AMONG WINES From 12/05/2012 to 28/07/2012 Jumilla Price: 20 euros Further info: www.rutadelvinojumilla.com It will take place at the wineries of Jumilla’s wine route from May 12th to July 28th. The price is 20 € including visit to winery, concert and appetizer; tickets can be bought by phoning the relevant winery. Please have a look at the programme for information about concerts. 2

It starts at the port, by recalling the station ‘Águilas – Puerto’. The visit goes on to the ‘Monumento al Ferrocarril’ –Railway Monument– and then, through the esplanade, to the ‘Puente de la Rambla de las Culebras’ on the sight-seeing train. From that place, the visit goes on, this time on foot, to the ‘Sendero del Hornillo’ –Hornillo Path–: after a visit to the first tunnel, the path is followed to the mineral tanks, until arriving to the Viewpoint. After that, everybody returns to the sight-seeing train and, through the ‘Pontón’, the visit arrives at the beach ‘Cocedores del Hornillo’, in front of the Pier. The route continues along the beach ‘Delicias’ to the Railway Station and the Railway Museum, and then includes a visit to the ‘Casa del Huerto de Don Jorge’. Finally, the sight-seeing train returns to the starting point through the old railway track. 4

Other musicians who have confirmed their participation to the 15th San Javier Jazz Festival are John Hiatt, Eliane Elias, Luis Salinas and the new quartet of Robben Ford and Michael Landau, called Renegade Creation. 5
REGION OF MURCIA´S CULTURAL CALENDAR Summer 2012 EXHIBITION: ‘WATER POMEGRANATES, PAPER SEAS’. PEDRO CANO From 06/07/2012 to 06/09/2012 Mazarrón Tel.: + 34 968 594 426 Mazarrón Town Hall will host a great exhibition of work by Pedro Cano from July 6th to September 6th. The exhibition, entitled ‘Water Pomegranates, Paper Seas’, includes some of the Murcian artist’s main work of the pomegranates series. It also includes his ‘Sea Notebooks’, with Mazarrón as one of the places where the artist, who was born in Blanca, has enjoyed feelings and emotions produced by the Mediterranean. The exhibition will be celebrated to commemorate the 440th anniversary of the aknowledgement of the Town Privilege. With the same purpose, Mazarrón Town Council offers a complete agenda, full of cultural, sports, educational and social activities such as concerts, exhibitions, guided visits, etc. 6
REGION OF MURCIA´S CULTURAL CALENDAR Summer 2012 VIRGEN DEL CARMEN FESTIVITIES IN SAN PEDRO DEL PINATAR Regional Tourist Interest 16/07/2012 San Pedro del Pinatar Further info: www.sanpedroturismo.com This colourful festivity is celebrated with a land and sea procession of the Virgin on a boat. The celebration starts with a reveille. The procession ends at Plaza de la Constitución, where a mass takes place at 8 am in San Pedro Apóstol parish church. One hour later, the seamen’s patron virgin is taken out of the church on a procession to Mar Menor, where the Virgen del Carmen’s sea procession starts at 10 am approximately. During the sea procession, an offering of carnations is made in memory of the deceased seamen and there is a moment of silence. At midday, a field mass is celebrated at the fish market. Also near the fish market, at about 11.30 pm, there is a great firework display to say goodbye to the Virgen del Carmen, whose image is carried in procession back to San Pedro del Pinatar. 7
REGION OF MURCIA´S CULTURAL CALENDAR Summer 2012 CARTAGENA’S 18th LA MAR DE MÚSICAS FESTIVAL From 19/07/2012 to 28/07/2012 Cartagena Further info: www.lamardemusicas.com Cartagena’s La Mar de Músicas Festival heads for Africa in 2012: there is a special programme including the new sounds from the African continent. Moreover, this year for the first time, the prize ‘La Mar de Músicas’ will be awarded to an artist who has a brilliant artistic career and who has done a great deal to defend human rights. This first time, the prize will be awarded to Oumou Sangaré, the queen of Africa. To celebrate the tribute, the African diva will perform twice in the Festival -that will take place from 20th to 28th July-: with Bela Fleck on July 23rd and with Trilok Gurtú and Jan Garbarek on July 24th, the day she will receive the prize. Furthermore, also Tony Allen, Carmen Linares, Los Evangelistas and Baloji will take part in the 18th La Mar de Músicas Festival. 8
REGION OF MURCIA´S CULTURAL CALENDAR Summer 2012 52nd CANTE DE LAS MINAS DE LA UNIÓN FESTIVAL International Tourist Interest From 01/08/2012 to 11/08/2012 La Unión Further info: www.fundacioncantedelasminas.com Tickets for sale at the Tourist Office of La Unión’s Town Hall and at ‘El Corte Inglés’ or its home shopping network. The 52nd Cante de las Minas International Festival -one of the most traditional and prestigious ‘jondo’ contests- takes place in August. The Festival will start August 1st with a free entry opening including an opening speech by María Dueñas and performances by the four winners of last year’s contests. After that, there will be six consecutive days of flamenco shows with performances by Sara Baras (2nd August), José Mercé (3rd August), Valderrama and Carlos Piñana (4th August), Dorantes with Joaquín Grilo and Pastora Galván as guests plus Rocío Márquez and Miguel de Tena (5th August), Arcángel and Marina Heredia (6th August) and, finally, Pasión Vega (7th August). The semifinals of the contests of flamenco singing, guitar, dancing and instrument will take place August 8th, 9th and 10th, and the final will take place on Saturday 11th August. In addition, matador José Mari Manzanares, film director Bigas Luna and cook José Andrés will also come to the Festival and will be awarded with Castilletes de Oro. 10

In the programme of San Javier’s 43rd Theatre, Music and Dance International Festival are, among others: ‘Carcajada Salvaje’ with Charlo López and Javier Gurruchaga, ‘Rumores’ by Neil Simon, with young actors such as Antonio Vico and Jesús Cisneros, and Ana Belén with ‘A los hombres que amé’. 11

There are many activities for all ages, and fun is guaranteed: inauguration of the wine fountain, offering of grapes and first must to the boy of the grapes, children’s parade, wine parade… 12
REGION OF MURCIA´S CULTURAL CALENDAR Summer 2012 LOS ALCÁZARES’S ORCHARD AND SEA INTERNATIONAL WEEK From 17/08/2012 to 25/08/2012 Los Alcázares Further info: www.losalcazares.com The park of the ‘peñas huertanas’ –orchard clubs– is full these days of ‘barracas huertanas’ –orchard adobe houses– which offer delicious dishes as well as regional handicrafts. On the stage there are, throughout the week, contests of ‘panocho’ proclamations, ‘trovos’, a children folklore festival and performances by relevant national and international folkloric groups. 13

REGION OF MURCIA´S CULTURAL CALENDAR Summer 2012 CANTE FLAMENCO DE LO FERRO FESTIVAL IN TORRE PACHECO Regional Tourist Interest From 27/08/2012 to 02/09/2012 Torre Pacheco Further info: www.festivaldeloferro.org At the end of August, for more than 25 years now, one of the most deeply traditional flamenco festivals takes place in a small locality from Torre Pacheco called Lo Ferro. The festival includes a series of musical shows: concerts, recitals or performances, always within the sphere of flamenco. In the programme there are new and acclaimed artists as well as contestants. 15

In addition to performances by national and international groups, there are parallel activities which contribute to the Festival’s modernity, study and Mediterranean culture contents. The Festival offers: performances by folkloric groups at different streets and squares of the city, as well as on the Festival’s main stage; exhibitions which provide the Festival with a raison d’être; studies and conferences about folklore that allow for a seminar and a database for folklore researchers; performances of traditional folklore from our region aimed at guest groups to promote our traditions; readings, declamations, dialogues, etc. on the subject of the Mediterranean sea; demonstrations of traditional games; and finally, a season of cinema and folklore. 17

REGION OF MURCIA´S CULTURAL CALENDAR Summer 2012 CARTAGENA’S 13th CARTHAGINIANS AND ROMANS FIESTAS National Tourist Interest From 21/09/2012 to 30/09/2012 Cartagena Further info: www.carthaginesesyromanos.es A landing commemorates the occupation of the city in 209 BC by Scipio’s Roman troops, and a festive week starts, including days dedicated to both factions. We celebrate, for instance, the wedding of Hannibal and Himilce, and the day of the Roman circus, with gladiators and wild beasts. On Saturday, the big day, the Fiestas end with a huge parade: all the troops and legions march through the city. 19
