The figures of the Amazons were a great source of inspiration for 18th century composers. In
these works, we find recurring female characters: queens (Antiope, Mitilene, Hippolyte,
Talestri, Marthésie) or androgynous beings, either female or warriors.
The Amazons theme will be featured in a Franco-Italian Baroque program with rising star
soprano Lea Desandre and Ensemble Jupiter. Much of the music hasn’t been performed
since it was written centuries ago.
