Edward had finally finished the FCA’s Conduct of Business Sourcebook. Reviewing his personal recommendations was next on his to-do list. A lighter read would have been the Nucleus white paper, ‘Suitability – A guide for financial advisers’. 4
Norman was concerned his firm was not acting honestly, fairly or in the interest of his clients. It was keeping him up at night. Why, oh why had he not paid more attention to COBS 2.1.1R? 6
Arthur should have considered including an emergency fund as part of his financial plan. A rainy day was coming. He wasn’t sure if his adviser had taken account of his wider financial circumstances when recommending a solution. 8
Clients came to Dean because of his winning smile but stayed for the balanced personal recommendations that considered their risk profile while eliminating any factual errors that were influencing their view. Dean was killing it. 10
It was at that moment Dorothy wondered if she was employing appropriately competent staff. Maybe now was a time for a review of the PROD rules? 12
PROD had also come to Fred’s attention and that it was something to do with segmenting his clients. He wasn’t overly concerned – his ‘gold’ level clients were doing just fine. 14
George’s clients considered their attitude to risk as high. But he wondered whether, all things considered, deferring retirement had been the best strategy after all. 16
Jane was searching for a demonstrably better alternative at the party. She had read the Nucleus white paper and knew that this proposition was not in line with her objectives. 18
Molly wasn’t an adviser but even she could see the client had little or no investment experience. A simpler solution was needed. 20
Clive may have overstated his capacity for loss. On reflection, his drawdown strategy of taking ten per cent a year may have been a tad excessive. 22
“Act normal”, thought Clarence. “Nothing to see here”. He knew his advice files only looked compliant on the surface. 24
Malcolm was #winning when his advice ticked every single one of his client’s objectives. ‘Downloading the Nucleus white paper was a good decision’ thought Malcolm. 26
Download our suitability white paper Suitable advice is at the heart of every financial adviser’s business. Yet how advisers are expected to demonstrate suitable advice has changed over time. This is thanks to regulatory developments such as Mifid II, product governance and pension freedoms, to name but a few. With this in mind, we’ve partnered with Rory Percival to compile a guide to delivering suitable advice, packed with real world examples and scenarios to show how the rules can be applied in practice.
