Study pathways At Ara our focus is on flexible study options. That’s why we have created various ways for you to gain qualifications and advance your training. There are a variety of levels for you to study, depending on where you want your career to lead you. You might start at an entry level foundation programme, or launch straight into a degree. Level Masters: 180–240 Credits 9 Entry criteria: Academic entry Degree graduates or relevant industry experience Level Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates: 60–120 Credits 8 Entry criteria: Academic entry Degree graduates or relevant industry experience Graduate Diplomas and Certificates: 60–120 Credits Level 7 Entry criteria: Academic entry Degree graduates or relevant industry experience Bachelor Degrees: 360–480 Credits Level 7 Entry criteria: Specified credits from a tertiary qualification at Levels 3-4, or specified NCEA credits at Levels 1-3, or equivalent Level Diplomas: 120–240 Credits 5-6 Entry criteria: Specified credits from a tertiary qualification at Levels 1-4, or specified NCEA credits, or equivalent Level Certificates: 40–120 Credits 1-4 Entry criteria: Open entry or specified credits from a tertiary qualification at Levels 1-3, or specified NCEA credits, or equivalent Level Dual Enrolment Programmes 1-3 Get a feel for tertiary study while you’re still at school. Level Foundation/Bridging Programmes 1-3 For those who need extra tuition in order to meet entry criteria we can tailor programmes to suit you and your aims. Entry criteria: Open entry (no academic entry criteria) Experience Ara Free junior and senior taster days. Short NCEA credit courses (STAR), holiday workshops and information sessions. Pathway to higher level Please note some programmes may have different entry requirements. 5
Study pathways n Dual Enrolment Dual Enrolment programmes DE Get a feel for tertiary study and earn NCEA credits at Ara while staying at school. In a dual enrolment programme you’re enrolled in both secondary school and Ara at the same time. Usually this means spending one to two days per week with us for the duration of the school year and earning NCEA credits in a subject of your choice. These programmes are free if you’re in Year 11-13. See an overview of all our dual enrolment programmes on the following page. Study pathways n Experience Ara There are many ways to experience Ara and to find out more about our programmes while getting a feel for what tertiary study is like. Get ready now! Junior and Senior tasters Register for one of our 180+ FREE Junior and Senior Taster Days for Year 9-13 students. Tasters are the perfect way to find out more about a subject choice and where it can lead to. STAR courses If you’re in Years 11, 12 or 13 you can complete short NCEA-credit earning STAR courses at Ara in a subject of your choice. Talk to your teacher or careers advisor at school or contact us: liaison@ara.ac.nz You can also attend a holiday workshop, information session or scholarship workshop to prepare for your enrolment. There are around 300 Experience Ara activities are available throughout the year. Please register online or email us on liaison@ara.ac.nz Open Days Come to an Ara open day in January or June to meet tutors, check out the campus and explore your study options. Campus tours Email us at liaison@ara.ac.nz and ask for a free campus tour. We can show you our facilities, tell you what’s happening at Student Central, take you to visit specific subject areas and introduce you to tutors who can discuss your interests and study options. Fees-free The government’s new fees-free scheme (starting in 2018) is a great opportunity if you haven’t already studied at tertiary level for more than six months. Providing you meet the eligibility criteria, your first year of study is fees-free. For more information visit www.feesfree.govt.nz. Level 1, 2 and 3 – study for FREE Are your 18 years old or under? Study pathways n Workforce Development The Workforce Development team focuses on developing relationships with industry throughout Canterbury to facilitate skills development in the workplace. Through these relationships the team establishes the training needs of industry and provides information to Ara departments to help inform programme design and planning. Our representatives comprise: Lana Shields (General Focus), Michelle Manuel (Māori Focus), Simo Faitaua (Pasifika Focus) and Sefa Faletanoai (General Focus). Professional development The Workforce Development team can also arrange tailored courses to meet the professional development needs of individual companies. These include online courses, workshops, block courses and qualifications up to degree level. The team can also discuss work experience, managed apprenticeships and internships for your company. For a more in-depth discussion, please contact liaison@ara.ac.nz Centre for Assessment of Prior Learning (CAPL) The Centre for Assessment of Prior Learning (CAPL) at Ara provides assessment and formal recognition of learning gained through work or other experiences. It is recognised internationally that learning in this way can translate into formal academic qualifications. To achieve your qualification CAPL can help with: • advice on credit recognition • facilitation and support • evidence gathering • organising the assessment process Who is eligible? Assessment of Prior Learning is available to anyone that has gained knowledge and learning from different sources, including: • formal learning • life experience • work experience • voluntary work • workplace training CAPL uses Ara staff and resources to assess your experience against academic requirements so credits can be awarded for all or part of a qualification.
