STUDIO NEWS… AND ALL THAT JAZZ www.dancin-plus.com APRIL/MAY 2021 Roses Are Red. Violets Are Blue. The Calendar Says Spring Is Here. Everyone Shout Yahoo!! This time of year has always been one of my favorites. This season, even more so because of all the challenges everyone has faced in the last year. It is so inspiring to think back to the first week of classes and realize what progress our dancers have made to get themselves to this point. When first introduced to new skills and choreography I was met with frightened expressions and comments of “I can’t do that” and “I’ll never get that!” Time passes and pretty soon they are indeed doing it and they are indeed getting it though it is in a really ruff looking form. A few more weeks pass and I am hearing “WOW! I can do it!” and “Hey! I am good at this!” and “Watch me do it!” Not only can they do it but they are moving with style and grace. I see the results of our dancers having confidence, working hard and the power of positive thinking. This is one of the reasons I am a dance instructor. It is so rewarding! We learn so much more in dance class than just fancy footwork! Before continuing on to the exciting news about recital weekend, we want to express a huge, heartfelt thank you to our dance families. Without you, our studio would not have survived the last year. Without dancers, there is no dance season. We are still dancing and we know it is because of you. We have been honored that you trust us with your child’s health and safety during the difficult circumstances we have all been living with. We have appreciated your support and kindness. We have always felt that our studio is a wonderful team of instructors, dancers and dance families and this year we feel it even more so. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And now…..Who is ready for a dance recital celebration? WE ARE! We have spent an incredible amount of time thinking through how to do this in the best possible way while following recommendations, restrictions and complying with safety measures. While recital weekend will be very different from how we usual do things, we think we have created a weekend to remember.
OUR RECITAL WEEKEND PLAN Please read carefully. We realize this is a lot of information and this is new to everyone. Once we give everyone some time to read through this a time or two we will schedule a Facebook LIVE Q&A session to discuss any questions you may have. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding as we leap into a totally new and unfamiliar way of offering show weekend. Our goal is to give our dancers and dance families performances filled with special memories. REHEARSAL- IN STUDIO We will not have a dress rehearsal on Wednesday, May 12. Instead, the week of May 10th, our dancers will have a no costume rehearsal in the studio at their regular class day/time. Dancers will come to class dressed as they normally would for class. MINI SHOWS – FAIRMONT OPERA HOUSE We have divided our classes into three mini shows. Please find your show time below by matching up your class time. Your dancer’s song names and costume directions are listed on the instruction sheet sent home with your costume(s). We did our best to schedule siblings in different classes for the same show times but because of multiple combinations, it was impossible to accommodate every family. Please know, we did our best. Each dancer will perform in two shows scheduled for the same day. Dancers are to arrive in costume for their first dance number. Our students enrolled in 45 minute tap and ballet classes as well as 45 minute hip hop class will sit with their family in the audience. We will call them up to the stage when it is their turn to perform. Dancers in 75 minute classes as well as pointe classes will be stationed in the lower level so as to make costume changes simple. One of the biggest challenges has been keeping shows small to meet capacity limitations while still having time in between dances for costume and shoe changing. This is tricky when doing a full show in our usual format. Mini shows make it even more difficult. We have strategically placed a brief intermission within each mini show. That will be time for those dancers seated in the audience to do any skirt changes and dance shoe changes. This will also allow a few extra minutes for our dancers with full costume changes. The exception to this is two performers (Aubree H and Stella M) in the Princess Party number in the Saturday shows. You will need to change right after Princess Party to be ready for The Glow. Undergarments are recommended for dancers with costume changes. Order forms will be sent home. Following first shows, all performers and dance families must exit the building while we clean and sanitize. We will begin letting people in the building 15 minutes before the second show.
During the dancer’s second show, we will do an award presentation. We usually do this at the last class of the year but thought it would be fun to do it on stage this year. At this time we are still mandated to mask and distance. Usual COVID protocol will be followed. We appreciate your cooperation in allowing us to comply with recommendations. In the next week or two, we will send a paper copy of this information home with your dancer to be sure everyone is aware of recital weekend plans. This may change before recital weekend. Because of this, we are on hold with ticket sales. We will be releasing more information about tickets and any purchasing limits three weeks before show weekend. Tickets will be available only through our online ticket box office. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
PICTURE DAY We no longer offer a studio wide, organized recital picture day. However, Seifried Portrait Design will offer individual/dance sibling photo sessions this year. I will be sure to send information home with your dancer as soon as we receive it. POINTE INVITES Pointe recommendations for next year have been mailed to those dancers showing readiness. If you received one in the past but decided to wait to enroll in pointe, the invite does not expire. Join us! If you do not receive one, never fear, dancers progress at different rates and we are always re-evaluating the dancer’s progress. We will be sure to let you know when we feel you are ready. Keep up the good work dancers! For more details on what pointe involves and what I look for in readiness pick up the handout at the studio called To The Point About Pointe. BUILDING SELF-ESTEEM This is the time of year we begin to see dancers with butterflies because they know that dance production weekend is nearing. This is completely normal and expected. As grown ups we know that the dance recital is not something that will hurt them. It is not dangerous to be on stage yet, some children can have anxiety over it. And that is ok. It is just a matter of normal lack of self esteem and confidence sneaking its way out of your child. When children dance, they have a "golden opportunity" to develop a positive self-image. We need parents to do their part. Here are some ideas to help build your child's self-esteem on and off the dance floor: * Keep it positive. When you find something to correct, find four other things to praise. * Instill humor. Help kids laugh at their mistakes. * Develop team spirit. Help your child think "we" not "me." * Step into your child's shoes. See life through her/his eyes. Listen and understand their feelings. * Involve yourself. Ask your child questions. * Notice any and all progress, in both skill and effort. * Praise specifics. Instead of saying "Hannah, good job!" say "I love the way you got yourself dressed for dance class and had your dance bag packed and ready to head to class with you! ATTENDANCE GOOD ATTENDANCE IS SO IMPORTANT DURING THIS TIME OF THE DANCE SEASON! WE ARE KICKIN’ OUR HEELS INTO OVERDRIVE GETTING OURSELVES POLISHED FOR OUR PERFORMANCES. WE WANT TO DO OUR BEST!
