Story of Diamond Brief
Deadline for Proposal – 22nd September 2021

Project Overview
Creative Diversity Network (CDN) is looking to appoint a producer or small production
company to produce a ‘Story of Diamond’ video. This brief covers work to be
 undertaken by early December.

 Project Objective
To mark the 5-year milestone of Diamond, the world’s leading diversity data system, we
are commissioning a creative, concise, and engaging video which tells the story of how
Diamond started and how it’s going.

Diamond has rapidly become an influence within the UK broadcasting industry, and we
want to commission a video which guides people through the history of Diamond whilst
educating them on the movement that Diamond is committed to. This video is a chance
for Diamond to tell its own story. We are hoping to capture Diversity & Inclusion in an
upbeat and light-hearted manner to deliver the entire message Diamond carries.

We ask that the finished product covers:
   • Information about what was happening before Diamond was available
   • A brief overview of how Diamond works and what it does
   • Progress made so far and optimism about the future

 About CDN
The Creative Diversity Network amplifies the work that the UK Broadcast industry is doing
around the diversity agenda, by capturing diversity and inclusion data to support the
industry with honesty and openness to ensure that actions are undertaken for
 measurable progress.
All the main UK broadcasters are members of the Creative Diversity Network as well as
several prominent associations such as Pact, Bafta and Screenskills.

 Additional Background Information

 About Diamond
Diamond is a cross-broadcaster diversity monitoring system used by BBC, ITV, Channel 4,
ViacomCBS, UKTV and Sky. It collects diversity details about people who are making TV
programmes – both on and off-screen. The data in the system is accessed by the Creative
Diversity Network and by the Diamond Broadcasters to produce reports about the
diversity of the people making programmes for the Diamond broadcasters.

Through regular reporting, we can track change and any progress made. This allows us to
be transparent about progress and enables us to hold the industry accountable. It also
gives us a clearer idea of where to focus our efforts as an industry. Our regular data
collection and reporting has increased the value of data and evidence in the industry and
encouraged others to take a more evidence-based approach.

Data is collected during the production phase of programme making. Producers enter the
names, email addresses and role type of programme participants (contributors) into an
online platform called Silvermouse. The system then automatically sends a diversity form
to contributors for them to complete and submit data about themselves into the system.
Producers also collect ‘perceived’ data. This is information about how on-screen
contributors might be perceived by audience viewers.

The purpose of Diamond is to understand the extent to which UK television reflects the
UK population. There was a lack of data collection before Diamond came about and
diversity was limited to ad hoc campaigns, and occasional audits.
With Diamond, broadcasters can now set clear targets and use Diamond as a
measurement and impact tool.
The results of this are evident to the public eye as you can witness improvement within
on-screen representation and there is a more open, ongoing, and more nuanced
conversation around diversity.
