2St Matthew’s Church of England Primary School, Ponders End
Welcome from the Chair of Governors
Witnessing to Christ with our lives and our learning
Our Christian Values:
Forgiveness, Peace, Friendship, Truthfulness, Courage and Thankfulness.
Dear Applicant,
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the opportunity to become our Headteacher at
St Matthew’s Primary School, Ponders End, in the London Borough of Enfield.
Our current Headteacher is retiring at the end of the Summer term 2022. We are proud of
what the school has achieved under her leadership. We are eager to appoint a new
Headteacher who will build on this success and continue the trajectory of continuous
improvement and development, motivated and empowered by our Christian vision and
values.
Our Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) in December 2021
confirmed St Matthew’s to be a Good school and the report drew out key strengths. Our
inclusive Christian vision is a ‘golden thread’ and the whole school is proud to live by our vision
and values. Pupil behaviour is exceptional. Parents value the care and dedication of staff in
achieving the best for their children. The safe and secure learning environment gives our
children the confidence to embrace high expectations and thrive in response to our inclusive,
creative and skills-based curriculum.
Our vision and determination to ‘run the race ahead’ and overcome any obstacles in our way
is shared by the whole school community of pupils, parents, staff and governors. We are
excited about what new heights the school will reach under your leadership.
We are conscious of some priorities to unlock further success, such as developing our Early
Years Foundation Stage and building capacity in the use of technology. We will welcome your
fresh perspective on these and other opportunities you will identify, alongside your
commitment and ability to sustain and harness our existing strengths.
The Headteacher job description and person specification reflect our context as a single form
entry school within a diverse community, where many families are living through challenging
circumstances in their daily lives. Empathic and strengths-based commitments to diversity,
equality and inclusion, with a track record of follow-through, will stand you in good stead for
becoming our Headteacher.
You will be working with passionate, flexible, generous and extremely hard-working
colleagues. We achieve results through a team approach and are seeking a Headteacher who
is an exemplary team-player with strong team leadership and management abilities.
3We would be delighted to welcome you to St Matthew’s for a visit so you can see, hear and
feel our school environment for yourself and find out more about the opportunity we are
offering you. Please contact Sue Michael, our Office Manager by ringing 020 8804 1666 or
emailing smichael9.308@lgflmail.org to arrange your visit.
Please apply by completing the London Diocesan Board for Schools Application Form and
by submitting your personal statement. As the Person Specification makes clear, in your
personal statement you are welcome to demonstrate your ability through transferrable skills
and informal experience where you have not yet had the opportunity to gain direct,
formalised experience of undertaking particular functions.
We look forward to receiving your application and to welcoming you to our school.
Best wishes
Amanda McIntyre
Chair of Governors
4Our Christian Vision:
Witnessing to Christ with our lives and our learning
Such a large crowd of witnesses is all around us!
So we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially the sin that just
won’t let go. And we must be determined to run the race that is ahead of us.
We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete.
Hebrews 12 v1-2
Our Christian Values:
Forgiveness, Peace, Friendship, Truthfulness, Courage and Thankfulness
At St Matthew’s we share a journey where the support and unity of everyone in the school
community is paramount to achieving an environment where learning takes place without
fear of making mistakes.
Our vision was decided and implemented in September 2018 by our children and staff
working closely with our parish priest at the time. The children chose Hebrews 12 v 1-2 as
their inspiration and emphasised to us that the whole text of these two verses was meaningful
and important to them. Our Christian vision and values are intertwined, as the children and
the whole school community see the values as key in equipping us to fulfil the vision.
Here are some of the ideas expressed by children with different faiths, over the past few
years, about how they understand and live out the vision and values:
‘This means to me that Jesus died on the cross to save our sins and simply telling others what
we have personally seen and experienced of the Lord Jesus’ - Year 3 pupil
‘This means to me that you should try your best at all times because God is always with us,
even if your religion is not the same as others’ - Year 4 pupil
At St Matthew’s we believe we should all work together no matter if we are or look different’
- Year 4 pupil.
‘The school vision means to me that Jesus Christ will always be with us, no matter what we go
through in our lives and our learning’ - Year 6 pupil
‘Like Jesus, I should be a peace-maker, not an argument maker’ - pupil talking to SIAMS
Inspector, December 2021
We ‘take what we have learnt from school, and this helps us to be a witness to Jesus and a
good person’ - pupil talking to SIAMS Inspector, December 2021
‘The whole school community is enabled to flourish, as pupils and adults become stronger
witnesses to Christ within the context of a fully inclusive vision at St Matthew’s. Successful
outcomes for pupils are driven by a determined staff, who are guided by the school’s vision
and associated values.’ SIAMS Inspection Report, December 2021
5Curriculum
We have designed a skills-based, broad, balanced and inspirational curriculum, tailored to our
school context, which engages children as learners and gives them a sense of belonging,
ownership and knowledge.
‘The curriculum is built on the framework of big questions. This is developed from the model
of the RE curriculum. It enables the school’s vision to be woven into every subject. Revisions
to the curriculum are made to reflect the context of the school. For example, Black role models
are celebrated in learning. The curriculum gives access to a rich learning journey that enables
pupils to flourish academically’ SIAMS, December 2021
‘The quality of the wider curriculum enables pupils to develop a range of skills to make good
progress and achieve well across a range of subjects’ OFSTED, 2018
‘School leaders have drawn up detailed action plans and employed a wide range of strategies
to support disadvantaged pupils. For example, staff have designed their own subject plans to
develop pupils’ reasoning skills and understanding in mathematics. Similarly, staff have
introduced more interesting activities to help motivate pupils to improve their reading and
writing. To support higher-attaining disadvantaged pupils, the school has been promoting
thinking skills through carefully planned tasks and challenging questions.’ OFSTED, 2018
School environment
The learning environment and pastoral support we offer the whole school community is a
great strength, as we work hard to remove barriers to learning so that nothing gets in the way,
aligning with our vision.
‘The safe and secure learning environment enables pupils to ask the big questions of life, in
the knowledge that they will be listened to and respected’ - SIAMS, December 2021
‘St Matthew’s Christian vision is fully inclusive. Pastoral care for vulnerable pupils enables
them to flourish. Provision for wellbeing and mental health ensures no child is left behind’-
SIAMS, December 2021
‘Pupils said that they feel safe in school and their parents confirmed this…Pupils described the
school as being a caring school – OFSTED 2018
‘Parents talk of the ‘close knit family feel’, at St Matthew’s’ – SIAMS December 2021
