St John‘s School Newsletter Issue 03 St John‘s Supports the World‘s Biggest Coffee Morning From the Headmaster I apologise for starting this third edition in a negative way especially when our assembly theme this week has been "positive thinking"! I would like to make a very important point about when you are driving your cars on to the St. John's site. This week I have spoken to parents who are travelling far too quickly; I have also witnessed parents on their mobile phones while driving in through the gates. Although the speed limit is 10 mph we must be extremely vigilant at all times. We are working carefully to make sure our crossings are clearly marked and that the boys and teachers Today we thoroughly enjoyed being part of the World‘s biggest coffee morning in take care when they cross the road. Come and Support the Travelling Book Fair This week and next week boys will be able to come along to the School Library at break times and lunchtimes and purchase some exciting new books from the Travelling Book Fair. There are lots of titles available suitable for all age groups and everything is competitively priced. Supporting the fair is important as it gives us extra funds to use to swell the stock on our School Library shelves. If you‘ve not been to the fair yet, there are still a few days to go. It‘s a Bug‘s Life! Chess Club in Action On Thursday we had our first visit from the Bug Rangers, Michelle Brown and Luke Penketh. They were here to begin the installation of two Bug Hotels in our school grounds which, we hope, will attract a large number of mini-beasts. One will be positioned in the Greg Heath Nature Trail for the Juniors and the other will be in Pre-Prep‘s forest area. They spent the day planning where to place the Bug Hotels and then digging their foundations. On Tuesday the chess team had their first fixture of the year and our Next week they will visit us again and as well as erecting the hotels they first ever fixture against Edge Grove, away. We played in two rounds will also speak in assembly and take the boys on a Bug Hunt! They will and the boys were matched against boys and girls of their age group. visit the Pre Prep on Thursday and the Juniors on Friday. Tallen Neelakanden was the overall team captain and played on board one. Khilan Pindolia and Kieran Spellward won one game each. Taif Choudhury completed the U13 team of four. The Colts team were led by Jayme Patel and comprised of Alex Shaikh, Ryhan Patel, who both won one game, and Krish Patwal who drew and won a game. The U9s, who were playing their first fixture for St. John‘s, were Dominic Joslin, Marcos Kantaris and Jake Prior led by Niyam Shah. Most of the boys won at least one match and Marcos managed to squeeze in an extra game and won all three which made him man of the match! Afterwards we were treated to a delicious tea—the final score was Edge Grove 16, St John‘s 12. 02 September 27 2013
Science Club Heats Up! On Monday, in Science Club, we performed a very interesting experiment using a Bunsen burner, a test tube and a carbohydrate (sugar crystals). The aim of the test was to see what happens to the carbohydrates when we hold them in a test tube over the flame of the Bunsen burner. Year Six top scientist, Rizwan Hameed said ―First we heated the sugar in the blue silent flame, it melted into a yellow liquid and then it went orange and finally red! Then we switched to the roaring flame and the mixture when black and expanded. This happened because gases were produced. Carbon atoms left in the test tube form black soot. This was the black stuff left in the test tube.‖ After a few minutes the sugar began to burn and began to smoke. By the end of the experiment we had found out many interesting things about how heat can change a substance in many different ways, such as the carbohydrates that we used changed from white to a mixture of brown, red and black. The hottest the test tube got was when we turned the collar of the Bunsen burner to open the air hole fully and produce the roaring blue flame. I think Science Club is a fun way for boys to get a better understanding of science. It is on Mondays from 4pm until 5 pm. and is open to year 5 and 6. Guy Collins 6L 03 September 27 2013

This week in Junior Assembly we saw some really fantastic work from some of our Year 4 boys who showed work from Geography, Science and Maths books as well as some lovely work in the style of Paul Klee. In all assemblies this week the topic has been ‗Optimism‘ and the boys in the Juniors are looking forward to showing their best work during the course of the year. 04 September 27 2013
Pre Prep Take School Council Very Seriously We are the Pre-Prep School Council members. We had our first meeting with Miss Morgan this week and then we are going to meet the whole school council next Friday. We met to talk about what we need to do and ask our friends about before the next meeting. The chairman leads the discussion and the secretary has to write down all our decisions in our School Council Book. We have put our photo on the front cover and we are going to put our photos and names on a board so that the boys in Pre-Prep know who we are. We are all very excited and full of ideas! This week in the Lambs we put on our wellington boots and went to the forest to play for the first time. We used the spades, wheelbarrows and rakes to explore the area. We also had a bear hunt, we found a bear home but luckily no bear! 05 September 27 2013

Enterprising Times in 2. the D.T. Lab These are the first boys to finish their ‗Zoo Souvenir‘ in D.T. Thomas Lemon, Ramy Nawar and James Coop designed and made these pieces which could be sold in a gift shop to raise money. They had to design the front, then file, drill and bend the plastic sheet and, using a foil switch, make a circuit on the back to light the L.E.Ds. All three boys earned a house point for their efforts! 08 September 27 2013
