Gafoa le Ata Bingo Musika Fundraiser An awesome evening of music and laughter helped to raise $8000 for our Samoan bilingual class travelling to Samoa in the next school holidays. Thank you to all our parents, students and staff who rallied together to donate gifts that were used for prizes and auction items on the night. A special thank you to all our sponsors: Sports Camp - Congratulations Last week 56 students went away to Matamata, Totara Springs Christian Camp, (Sports Camp). Our students from Kowhai, worked hard in preparation for Sports Camp. There were early morning trainings, lunchtime trainings and also after school trainings. Not to mention trialling for all central zone sports and attending morning fitness. There were seven schools that competed, we counted as 2 teams which meant there were eight teams competing. Schools came all the way from Whangarei to Cambridge. Our two teams were called Kowhai and Uira. They competed in 41 different sports. Some sports which students have never heard of, as well as never played. If your team won a sport, you were guaranteed a trophy cup at prize giving and were also awarded points. If you made the top four, you were guaranteed points. The school with the most points, wins the overall trophy. Uira won, rugby, soccer, softball, athletics, hockey, volleyball, basketball, wallball, petanque, cross country, triathlon, indoor hockey and table tennis. Our Kowhai team also won indoor soccer and the quality living quizz, as well as made placings for a number of sports. Of the 41 sports, we collected points for 37 sports, Our total was 250 points by the end of the week. These points we enough to make us overall winners of "Sports Camp 2018" Te Awamutu Intermediate, came in at second place, with a score of 156 and 3rd place went to Morrinsville Intermediate, with a total of 116.5 points. Kowhai students were well deserving of their victory and they were great ambassadors for our school. They were polite and respectful and very humble winners. Congratulations to all students who attended "Sports Camp 2018". Canister Rockets By Amelie - room 15 Last week in science we launched canister rockets to see how high they would go. The first step was in partners we made cones and fins for our canisters. Next we went down to the bottom field to launch our rockets. Our teacher told us to take the lids off our canisters. She then came and put baking soda in the lid and vinegar in the canister. We then put the lid back on shook them up and put them on the ground. The chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda propelled the canisters to go up in the air, leaving the lids behind them but then gravity pulled them back down.
MATHEX By Ella - Room 11 Traffic was terrible last week on the journey to Kohimarama. Two of my teammates got there with thirty seconds to spare before the competition started. Phew! We had a full team of four; one runner and three problem solvers. Mathex was a fun experience. We had half an hour to complete 20 questions. We competed against about 70 teams. We scored 70 points. Not bad, but the winners got 100 with time to spare! The two Year 7 teams included Cody, Katie, Will B, Tom W, Sarah, Ella D, Joseph and Tama. The Year 8 teams included Max, Luke B, Hilarie, Abby, Leroy, Maachi, Daniel, Gus. All teams did really well. Kowhai Swim League Team By Anaïs - Room 15 Each year a group of students from intermediate schools around Auckland race each other in swimming races. This is a competition that happens four times in term 2 and 4 times in term 3. For each race you do, you get points. If you come in the top 3 in your race you'll get higher points than if you come 4th, 5th, 6th… At the end of every term the points are added up and the team with the highest score wins. Also on Thursdays at Lunch we go down to the pools to train for the races. I really enjoy being part of the swim league and Mrs Semmons dedicates her lunches on Thursdays to help us train and she chooses which races we will be doing depending on the strokes that we are better at. If you are going to be a year 8 next year feel free to join the swim team! Central Zone Squash 23 August 2018 On Thursday 23 August Kowhai Intermediate competed in the inaugural Central Zone Squash competition held at Remuera Squash Club. There were other children from ANI, St Paul’s, Ponsonby Intermediate and St Cuthberts. In the team we had Devansh, Himanshu, Caleb, Ayush, Dylan, Joel, Connor, Luca, Rio and Salina. There were some great games being played and some awesome squash. With most of the children only recently taking up squash, there were some really close scores. Well done to Joel (4th) Year 7 boys, Ayush (6th) Year 8 boys and Salina (4th) playing in the Year 8 girls section. All the children had plenty of games and enjoyed the opportunity to play against other schools - squash is excellent for fitness and as a individual sport competing against people at your same level. We look forward to next year's competition.
Whanau Camps at Lakewood Lodge Ella and Eve - Room 6 During week 5, Whanau Takahe (rooms 4, 5, 6 and 7) travelled to Lakewood Lodge, in Huntly. While we were there, we completed a range of activities, including, Horse Riding, Flying Fox, Kayaking, Archery and much more. Each day we did three activities with our camp group, this was a great way to bond with lots of different people from our whanau. Each group got the chance to participate in ‘Survival’. We trekked out to survival camp where we participated in activities including, fire building, gumboot throw, injury treatment and the mud run. Unfortunately, the weather was so bad that we were unable to stay in tents at survival camp, instead we slept over in the hall. Survival was an amazing experience loved by all! In our spare time, we were able to help out on the farm, feeding animals, helping with the horses, slip ‘n sliding and playing epic games of spotlight. All of us agreed that it was the most mud we had ever seen, although it did make for great fun! Thank you so much to all our teachers, the parents that came along and to the staff at Lakewood Lodge. It was an amazing experience that will not be forgotten!
Kua Tae Te Wā update After months of negotiations with the Ministry of Education, and more talks since the strike on August 15, we still have no new offer. Our union, NZEI Te Riu Roa, continues to negotiate in good faith, but the Government says it will take time to fix the issues. However, time is the one thing we don’t have. Around the country we’re seeing: - 40% reduction in teacher trainees - Zero applicants for some teaching jobs - More children entering school - More children with additional learning and behavioural needs - Teachers are burning out and leaving the profession, often within a few years of graduating The staff at our school want your children to have the very best education we can provide. We’re standing firm in that commitment and believe the time is now to ensure that schools can offer every child the education and support they need, and that we have a sustainable teaching profession into the future. Our children can't wait. We won't wait. We appreciate your support. Please talk to your child’s teacher if you have any questions, and consider signing this petition to the Minister of Education in support of teachers. https://campaigns.nzei.org.nz/time/petition-teachers-and-principals/
