St. Augustine Catholic Church & School Celebrating Over 100 Years of Catholic Tradition Welcome back to the celebration of Mass in our beautiful Church! Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Next week’s opening of the Church is only the beginning of our celebration in turning the corner on the pandemic. But like a Tsunami, as the large wave recedes, we still need to keep an eye on the ocean waves, so that we are not taken by surprise, and to do everything reasonable to remain healthy. With this in mind, our opening of the Church for regular services will be done in a phased and slow manner. It will be good to be back in the Church building, but always remember that WE are the Church, whether we are in a parking lot or in a building we call “the Church.” Next week, as we celebrate Independence Day, we will also celebrate our return to Mass inside the Church with “spiritual” fireworks. We will open the doors to a new journey, one of community building and walking as true disciples. During the past 18 months, it may have seemed as if we were cast out on our own, but rest assured, God was always with us, and continues to be present for us. So, what does a “phased opening” mean? Basically, we will open the Church gradually, adding Masses as attendance increases. This means that we will continue to have three (3) Sunday Masses at 10:00 a.m. (English), 12:30 p.m. (Spanish), and 5:00 p.m. (English). There will be no 3:00 p.m. Mass on Sunday. The 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Masses will move back into the Church. Many of you have indicated that you would feel more comfortable having Mass in the parking lot, and so we will continue to celebrate the 5:00 p.m. Mass in the parking lot. We will also move our Tuesday and Friday evening services back into the Church. Accompanying the move back into the Church are some changes to the guidelines according to which Mass will be celebrated. These include: No occupancy limits on Mass attendance. No social distancing will be required, and tracing information will no longer be taken. No disinfecting or cleaning between Masses as expected during the pandemic. As for face coverings, we encourage all to continue wearing masks, however we will also follow the CDC guidelines which indicate that: Fully vaccinated persons no longer need to wear a mask in any setting. Unvaccinated persons are encouraged to wear face coverings. Communion will continue to be distributed only in one form – The Body of Christ. For more details on the new guidelines, we invite you to access our Return to Church page on the St. Augustine Website - https://st-augustine-church.org/. Blessings, Fr. Chris 3850 Jasmine Ave, Culver City (310) 838 -2477 www.st-augustine-church.org
June 27, 2021 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear St. Augus ne Community, I’ve never been very good at saying good-bye. I figure that has mostly to do with how I’m actually pre y good at saying goodbye. You see, growing up, my family had to say goodbye a lot. With three siblings in the army, we made a lot of trips to the airport to wish them farewell as they le for deployment to another country or a new assignment in a different state. And we have a rule: don’t look back. Once we’ve already said goodbye, and it’s me to walk down that jetway or start through security, don’t look back—it will only make things harder! Well, we may have done that only to protect ourselves from having to feel more of the goodbye. But s ll, I learned how to say goodbye and to know when it was said. I men on all this so that if it seems I say my farewells and I don’t look back while moving on, it’s one of the ways I’ve always known how to show love. That doesn’t make saying goodbye any easier, trust me. And it definitely does not mean I’ll just forget about my me here and move on. And no way does it mean that we won’t see each other again— or if we do that I’ll ignore you or pretend not to see you! What it means is that it’s me for me to take the next step that is the adventure of the priesthood, and that means saying goodbye as I know how to. Please know that I am not comparing this goodbye to anything less than how I say it to my own family. I grew up in a house and a family that taught me what it’s like to love and forgive and apologize and pray—a domes c church. I learned how to become a Chris an at home, in my family. I’ve learned how to become a priest here at St. Augus ne. This is where I’ve learned to love people with the heart of a priest. This is where I’ve learned to forgive with Jesus’ own words in the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. This is where I’ve learned to say sorry for my own selfishness in the face of my great responsibility as a priest. This is where I’ve learned more about my own deep need for prayer. I’m sorry that so much of my me here in this last year and a half has been hidden away by this pandemic. I just want you to know I’ve been in the Church almost every night, praising and worshiping the Lord for all those who could not be in there with me. It was not the way that I had hoped to end my me here, but it is the me that Lord has given to us. Now He is calling me into a new mission, serving the youth of the Archdiocese as a high school chaplain. God knows be er than I do what I’m capable of, and that I need your prayers as I move forward. So even though it may seem like I don’t look back a er saying my goodbyes, that doesn’t mean that I’ve forgo en you. I never will. This will always be my first home as a priest. God’s peace! Fr. Tim Grumbach 2 Maccabees 15:38 2

P. Tim Grumbach 2 Macabeos 15:38 8
