The Prelude Air for Organ Gerre Hancock Hymn 427 When Morning Gilds the Skies Laudes Domini Opening Sentence Officiant Thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, “I dwell in the high and holy place and also with the one who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15 Confession of Sin (All kneel.) Page 79 The Invitatory and Psalter (All stand.) Page 80 Officiant Lord, open our lips. People And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. (Remaining standing, all are invited to join in singing the Venite and the Psalm.) Venite S 35 (“S” items are found in the front portion of the Hymnal.) Jack Noble White Psalm 34:9-14 Jerome Webster Meachen 9 Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, * for those who fear him lack nothing. 10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger, * but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good. 2
11 Come, children, and listen to me; * I will teach you the fear of the LORD. 12 Who among you loves life * and desires long life to enjoy prosperity? 13 Keep your tongue from evil-speaking * and your lips from lying words. 14 Turn from evil and do good; * seek peace and pursue it. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The Lessons (Please be seated for the reading of the First Lesson.) The First Lesson: Proverbs 9:1-6 Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls from the highest places in the town, “You that are simple, turn in here!” To those without sense she says, “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Lay aside immaturity, and live, and walk in the way of insight.” Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 3
(Please remain seated as the Choir sings the Canticle. The text of Canticle 10, The Second Song of Isaiah is found on pages 86-87 of the Book of Common Prayer.) Canticle 10 The Second Song of Isaiah Quaerite Dominum Henry Purcell (Please remain seated for the reading of the Second Lesson.) The Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:15-20 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. (Please remain seated as the Choir sings the Canticle. The text of the Canticle 19, The Song of the Redeemed is found on page 94 of the Book of Common Prayer.) Canticle 19 The Song of the Redeemed Magna et Mirabilia Henry Smart (Please remain seated for the reading of the Third Lesson.) The Third Lesson: John 6:51-58 Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 4
The Sermon The Reverend Peter Lane (A moment for reflection.) (Please follow the clergy in standing for the Apostle’s Creed and the Prayers.) The Apostles’ Creed Page 96 The Prayers Page 97 The Lord’s Prayer Page 97 The Suffrages A Page 97 The Collects The Collect of the Day Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A Collect for Peace O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for Guidance Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Prayer for Mission O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5
A Prayer for Doctors and Nurses Sanctify, O Lord, those whom you have called to the study and practice of the arts of healing, and to the prevention of disease and pain. Strengthen them by your life- giving Spirit, that by their ministries the health of the community may be promoted and your creation glorified; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Prayer for the Sick O God, the strength of the weak and the comfort of sufferers: Mercifully accept our prayers, and grant to your servants whom we now name the help of your power, (names from our parish prayer list are read, and/or offered from the congregation) that their sickness may be turned into health, and our sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Please be seated for the Welcome, Announcements and Offertory Anthem.) Welcome and Announcements The Offertory Anthem There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy Maurice Bevan There’s a wideness in God’s mercy Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness is his justice, Which is more than liberty, There is no place where earth’s sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven; There is no place where earth’s failings Have such kindly judgment given. For the love of God is broader, Than the measure of the mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. But we make his love too narrow By false limits of our own; And we magnify his strictness With a zeal he will not own. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head. There is grace enough for thousands Of new worlds as great as this; 6
There is room for fresh creations In that upper home of bliss. If our love were but more simple, We should take him at his word; And our life would be all gladness In the joy of Christ our Lord.
