Quarterly Publication- Winter 2019 SQUIRE TEA “Our Squire Tea is so hot, you’ll need ice to put out the heat!” Journalism 2019-2020 Class INTRODUCTION: Hello Squires! This is the 2019-2020 Squire Tea. This class will be telling you about all the tea: from sports, new games, music, and even movies! If you’re new to Rio Linda Preparatory Academy, you can even learn about the staff! We will also be covering many other interesting things that go on at RLPA. Our “tea” is so fire you’ll need ice to cool it down! We will be coming out with a new article each quarter and possibly even do a newscast. So far in our Journalism class, we have done many things, such as current events, comparing movies to real life stories, and working on our typing skills. This class is run by Mr. Comeau, one of the English teachers here on campus. He has us working on our ability to use inference. The ability to inference is when you read a story or piece of writing and use context clues to be able to identify what happened. We will be using these skills to write a new article every quarter. We hope you enjoy our Squire tea this year! Written by: Jenline Welch, Angelina Corey, Alyssa Barrera, & Faith Wendland
Quarterly Publication- Winter 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Written by Muska Rahimi Martin Luther King Jr., is known for his contributions to the American civil rights movement in the 1960s. His most famous work is his “I Have a Dream” (1963) speech, in which he spoke of his dream of a United States that is void of segregation and racism. Dr. King also advocated for nonviolent methods of protest. Because of him, society in the United States has changed for the better. Before the American civil rights movement, there was active segregation in schools and cities all across America. The nation was divided by race with anyone of color being separated. Looking at the world today, with the United States being known as “the melting pot” of the world, it is easy to see how Dr. King’s legacy lives on. It is thanks to him that we do not have to worry about the color of our skin and instead can be judged on the “content of our character.” INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. • Dr. King’s birth name was Michael, not Martin. • King entered college at the age of 15. • Dr. King is the only other American besides George Washington to have had his birthday observed as a national holiday. Quarterly Publication- Winter 2019 GAMING NEWS: Mortal Kombat 11 By James Helmer Mortal Kombat 11 is a good fighting game. It has guest characters like the Terminator and The Joker from the Batman series. Like all of the other Mortal Kombat games, it has good graphic effects and it just gets better and better. Go check out the new Mortal Kombat 11 in stores. The game costs $59.99 in stores and it was originally released on April 23rd, 2019. You can get it on Xbox1, Ps4, and PC. The game is based on fighting to the death in different arenas with different characters. The game features many weapons to find and create. Made by Techland, it will cost $59.99 and will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Personally, I think it looks really fun. NBA 2k18 By Joey Kuhn On September 15, 2017 game developer 2k released NBA 2k18. NBA 2k18 is a basketball video game. Unfortunately, this game was not well received. One reason people did not like this game is because you had to buy a faster console. If you did not buy a faster console you couldn’t even play the game as it would crash every two games. It would also take up to thirty minutes to join your friends. NBA 2k18 was released for the Ps4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Ps3. NBA 2k18 shut down their servers on January 18, 2020.
Quarterly Publication- Winter 2019 SQUIRE MOVIE REVIEWS Terminator: Dark Fate By Amber Nelson Terminator: Dark Fate was released on November 1, 2019. The movie, a time traveling assassin action story, is rated R because it has violence and strong language. It was a good movie and I would see it again because it left me on the edge of my seat. People don’t have to see the other movies to understand what is going on in this movie. Bad Boys for Life By Phillip Sterner Bad Boys for Life is a police action movie that is rated R. It stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence and is the third movie in the series. It was released on January 17, 2020. I haven't seen it but it looks good and I want to see it. I think people who like crime or action movies would definitely enjoy Bad Boys for Life. Abominable By Chris Magana Abominable was released on September 27, 2019. The average rating for the movie is around 7/10. Abominable is rated PG. This movie is a comedy, family, and fantasy. In my opinion, I would recommend this movie because it is heartwarming. The movie takes place from a Chinese city all the way to the Himalayan snowscapes. After a Yeti was discovered on a teenage girl’s roof, Yi and her two friends go on an adventure to reunite the Yeti with his family.
Quarterly Publication- Winter 2019 WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE PREP: Girl’s Basketball By Yanissa Rubio & Arianna Quidachay We interviewed Mr. Drake who is both a teacher and a coach for RLPA’s girls basketball team. Mr. Drake prefers being a teacher because it is very easy and he loves to show students what he has experienced. We asked him what this year’s team’s strengths and weaknesses are and he said teamwork was the strength and experience was our only weakness. It's important for him to be a part of the team because like normal teaching he also loves to teach basketball. As he explained to us, “it's a great opportunity to work with kids outside of the classroom.” Squire Rewards & School Spirit By Nick Goncharov & Javier Galvez Both Nick and I went to interview Mr. Cruz, RLPA’s Activity Director and Leadership teacher. We asked him about any upcoming events and he said there will be a school dance and a rally in February. He didn’t tell us the theme so it would remain a surprise for the students. We also asked him about who came up with the idea of Squire Rewards. He explained that, “Everyone thought of it. Mrs. Harrison and Ms. Dickson saw that other schools had monthly events to reward the students so they wanted to reward us in a similar way.” We think that this has been a great addition to the school.
Quarterly Publication- Winter 2019 New Years Resolutions by Natalie Salcedo A New Year´s Resolution is a tradition. It´s most common in the Western Hemisphere and the Eastern Hemisphere. People resolve to continue good practices, or change an undesired trait or behavior. It’s used to accomplish a personal goal, or to improve your own life. A study found that about 46% of participants who made a common New Year´s Resolution were more likely to succeed. I personally think that a New Year´s resolution is good for some people.
