Fall and Winter Lorem Ipsum Dolor 2018 Switch Access to the iPad: APPlicator vs APPlicator-single Do you have a student who has difficulty releasing a switch? Some students with motor challenges have a hard time lifting off of the switch no matter the access site and movement. Many switch interfaces for the iPad are programmed to send repeated signals when the switch is held down. This means that a message is sent repeatedly causing an action to be performed again and again. The results can be very frustrating for the student, as they are unable to make the selection they intend to make. For example, if the switch is set to pause and play an audio book, the iPad will repeatedly pause and play when the switch is held down. If the switch is set to scan through an AAC app or switch accessible game, the iPad will continue to scan through options when the student holds down the switch, preventing the student from selecting the item they intend to select. In many cases, the student and practitioner will elect to remain with low tech supports because of this physical access challenge. To address this challenge, Pretorian has come out with the APPlicator (single), which can be purchased in the USA through Inclusive Technologies, Inc. All ports on the Applicator-single can be programmed to only send one signal per switch press. This opens up possibilities for students who are “heavy handed” when accessing switches. SETC will be carrying APPlicator (singles) in the fall of 2018. The way you identify an APPlicator (single) is that it will be black instead of beige. When ordering the APPlicator (single), click on the down arrow next to “variants” and select APPlicator (single). See our updated Switch Interface Guide for more information on selecting a switch interface. Join us on November 13 for a webinar on Switch Access to AAC Apps.
