Overview A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PROGRAMME Wings Over Wairarapa 2021 is being held from the 26th to the 28th February at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton, Wairarapa. In 2019 we ran our inaugural STEM programme at Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival targeted to school-aged youth. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) can be a challenge to teach, and is well recognised as a critical part of the school curriculum. This is linked to a shortage of people globally to fill STEM related jobs (eg. pilots, engineers, technicians). Aviation is the perfect context for learning about these topics. The programme runs for all three days of the festival, and on the Friday (practice and arrivals day for aircraft) we run a Wairarapa Schools Day, to which we invite every school in Wairarapa to attend for free. This means students from years 0 to 13. We adopt a broad interpretation of aviation or flight, and incorporate themes around space, ballooning, skydiving and astronomy to name a few. The programme was an outstanding success, with 4,500 students and teachers attending, and we are running it again in 2021. 01
The Aim & Purpose of STEM Wings has four key aims to its STEM programme: to inspire young people into considering a STEM related course of study or career in aviation, space or linked in some way to flight to 'give back’ to our region through educational opportunities for local schools to seek opportunities to reach those in ‘hard to reach’ sectors as they relate to participation in STEM (female, Maori and Pasifika students and rural schools) to broaden the age demographic of attendees at our air festival Importance of STEM education Science is all around us. Technology is continously evolving and becoming a vital part of our very day living. Engineering is not only about building roads & bridges but also creating environmentally friendly concepts tackling challenges such as changing global weather. Automation and globalisation are changing the way we think about, and define careers. This change emphasizes the importance of matching our skills to the change. STEM learning is based on an interdisciplinary curriculum, and is driven by both current and future skills shortages in STEM focused employment. Taking these subjects at school can put young people on a pathway to a sought-after career. Our approach is to inspire young people by providing hands-on, engaging and interactive experiences delivered by people keen to pass on their knowledge and experience. 02
What is the programme about? THE RANGE OF ACTIVITIES AND HOW THEY ARE DELIVERED STEM STATIONS FREE RANGE STEM STEM Stations are usually provided in Free Range STEM activities are more ‘demo’ marquees, and are highly interactive based than interactive but still activities within a defined space. These engaging, and suited to larger audiences, activities may be trying a simulator, VR or often outside near static aircraft. Students can AR equipment, operating a small robot, or wander the site on Friday with their trying 3-D printing. On Schools Day parent/teacher groups, and self-select where (Friday), groups of students rotate around they stop. Experts will be encouraging these activities in half hour sessions. On audience engagement and questions. Saturday and Sunday it is up to the STEM Students report a high level of enjoyment and provider to best choose how they manage value just watching the aircraft in the air or groups of people, and they may choose to static aircraft around the site. Aerodrome charge a nominal amount to cover the residents are encouraged to impart their cost of their participation. valuable knowledge and skills to students on site by simply approaching groups and engaging in conversation, or setting up a demo of some sort outside their hangar. 03
STEM WORKSHOPS SMALL STEM STEM Workshops are limited in Our Small STEM area is for new entrants numbers, and some may be held in to Year 3. These activities are under buildings not so visible. This is so that shade, with water provided, and are play- students get maximum value out of the based STEM activities. Our aim is to teaching on offer. On Schools Day, provide valuable activities for this age limited spaces in workshops are allocated group, without the amount of walking evenly across schools according to the and structure that the rest of the levels they are targeted to, and schools programme involves. Activities have choose the students they want to been developed by local education participate in them. On the weekend, practitioners. these can be booked by members of the public for a charge. STAGE STEM Stage STEM: Stage shows, demos and short presentations by a wide variety of people and organisations involved in aviation, space, science and other STEM related areas. The stage is outdoors, and shows or presentations must be highly professional & engaging, with space for a couple of thousand people in the audience. 04

supporting the programme HOW TO GET INVOLVED Contact us to discuss ideas around a proposed activity and delivery method. The majority of organisations involved provide activities free of charge, either for all three days, or at least the Schools Day on Friday (this is a condition of participating). Or they may choose to run workshops on a paid basis on Saturday and Sunday to recover the cost of participating for free on Friday. Organisations looking to promote careers or training can reach a large audience (25,000 people over three days) at little cost. Organisations and individuals participate for a variety of reasons: to fulfil their education outreach obligations, to promote their own organisation or training programmes, because their organisation was set up to educate, or out of a desire to ‘give back’ or inspire youth to achieve or enter a pathway to an aviation or other STEM career. Costs depend on: ability to pay (eg. commercial entity vs not-for-profit or individual volunteer) whether you have your own shelter/marquee or other structure from which to operate the type of activity you can provide We are happy to consider any arrangement that provides an engaging or interactive STEM related activity to students and adds to the quality and sustainability of the programme. Or you may want to sponsor an aspect of the programme - to provide free transport for students, a marquee to accommodate an activity, or provide a stage show to add to the programme. Talk to us if you are interested in providing or sponsoring a STEM activity exhibit@wings.org.nz 06
