We are ending the season in a big way. Read more to find out about all the great plans for April and May. Next Meeting: Tuesday, April 9, 2019, 7:00 pm, LLUMC Asbury Hall
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Lou Bono, SWS President Finally spring has arrived! It seems all the trees, dogwoods and red buds have exploded the last two weeks in March! Get out and enjoy the mild spring weather while it lasts! This month’s President photo was taken at Bastrop, TX historical Old Town Center. Bastrop is a quaint small town on the Colorado River, southeast of Austin. Bastrop also hosts the First Friday Art Walk, a monthly showcase and celebration of galleries, artists and restaurants with snacks and wine tasting for visitors. It is worth a weekend trip if you are in the Austin Area. Thank you again to our Board and nominating committee for all your hard work and all the members who were announced at the March meeting to serve on next year’s board. They will be installed at the May meeting and become active in June. We were also able to recruit the Exhibition team much earlier this year than prior years to get a head start on planning, and we are delighted that Regina Carl has accepted the call to serve as 4th VP Exhibition. Thank you to Regina and all the Exhibition committee members who have volunteered to produce our biggest event of the year! I’d like to especially thank Pam Wilson and Bill Dale for their collaboration to improve our exhibition team structure, playbook and detail work list, and to make the planning and execution the best ever. Thanks to Gail Cooksey and Gail Chambers for leading public relations, both for the Exhibition and SWS overall. Thanks to Pam again for leading the organization and planning of our May 14th fundraiser which benefits our September Exhibition, as well as the entire fundraiser team – look for more announcements. Many hands makes light work! Thank you to all of our members and volunteers for your dedication and call to service to make and keep SWS one of the premier watercolor societies, with 400 members strong. ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT Sherry Daerr “It’s easy to paint if you don’t know how, but very difficult if you do.” Edgar Degas Truer words have never been spoken. The more I know, the more intimidated I am looking at that blank sheet of watercolor paper. Where do I begin? Where do I place the focal point? Where is the light source? Is it warm or cool? Where will be the point of most contrast? So many questions go through my head before I place the first stroke of color on the paper. Let me back up and tell you about my journey in putting miles on the brush. I have no formalart training or degrees in art, but I consider myself a “workshop junkie”. I have taken dozens of workshops over the past 10 years since I began painting. Most of the workshops have been with Na- tionally and World renown Artists. I tell myself, “If I take away one good thing from the workshop and apply it to my painting habits, the workshop will have been worth it. Mary Whyte says to stay with the largest brush for as long as you can- smaller brushes have a tendency to tighten up your work. I don’t remember who said it, but he/she said, “I have never had a student say to me that they want to tighten up!”. Charles Reid said that you should learn the rules, then break them. He is truly a maverick in the world of watercolor. “Value is important, not color” Jane Angelhart. It is true, color gets all the credit and value does all the work. I started painting 10 years ago with a small group on Wednesdays led by Babs Light. She is very knowledgable and very sharing. Babs got me started with good painting habits from the start. In the beginning, I tried just about every subject matter, but never really felt like I was getting anywhere until one day I painted a yellow lab from a photograph that I had taken in Colorado. And, there it was. I had that “Ah ha!” moment and I said that I needed to be painting animals. Why? Because I am very compassionate towards animals. I was painting from the heart to the paint brush. Painting what you are passionate about should come easy because it means something to you. When I decided to paint animals, I started to paint the dog breeds from A to Z in order to get better. I got to the ‘g’s’ in the alphabet and I began to take commissions for pet portraits, and as they say, “The rest is history”. I was keeping pretty busy with the commissions of dogs, cats, horses and birds and enjoying every minute of it. It’s really fun to get to know the animal while I am painting them, especially once I have painted the eyes, I then have a friend. After 7 years, I moved to Georgetown, Texas. I entered a couple of my dog paintings into a juried competition and was approached by 6 women asking if I teach. I said, “Yes” with my fingers crossed behind my back. Shortly thereafter, I started teaching how to paint animals in watercolor. My classes are always full, and I have quite a following now. I enjoy teaching tremendously. I learn so much from my students. I try and teach them everything I know which is not everything by a long shot, but we grow together. 3
ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT Prior to my painting career, I was a fashion designer, and owned and operated un upscale bridal boutique in downtown McKinney. The fashion industry was a pressure cooker job, but allowed me to travel all over the world. The retail store was successful and gratifying, but oh what a headache it can be. The best job in the world is the one I have now….painting what I love. What could be better? I have a YouTube channel with some videos I have created to help my students. Go to YouTube.com and search for Sherry Daerr and all my videos will pop up. I would appreciate a thumbs up if you enjoy watching the videos. My website is: www.petportraitsbysherryd.com I have served on the board for SWS since 2008 to current date as Corresponding Secretary. I am the one who sends out all the SWS emails to you. “Boots” the Texas Longhorn 20X30” Watercolor on 140 lb. “Yellow Lab” was my I received my SWS signature Arches Paper. SWS RECENT EVENTS February Membership Meeting & Workshop - Brenda Swenson Brenda Swenson was the featured artist for the February Membership Meeting and taught the first three day Workshop of 2019. During her meeting presentation and the work- shop, Swenson shared the way she creates an underpainting and then paints around the light shapes to bring them forward. This technique, called negative painting, results in bright transparencies and luminous paint- ings, often showing closeups of flowers. In her teaching she focuses on creating interesting shapes and depth of color with transparent glazes and strengthening a painting with overlapping, interlocking shapes and linkage. 5
SWS RECENT EVENTS March Membership Meeting & Workshop - Graham Berry The March Membership Meeting featured British watercolour artist, Graham Berry who has been a professional artist for over 40 years. In his workshops he encourages people to create watercolours of their own using “every day scenes” from around the world. His work evolved from his graphic design and commercial art background and he demonstrated his approach using a limited pallet to create paintings of figures in public settings that are designed to simplify shapes and colors to eliminate unnecessary detail. The photo on the right shows Graham Berry demonstrating his approach by doing a painting of a fisherman. The screen behind him shows his pallet, reference photo, and how he ap- plies paint. The photograph below shows all the workshop participants with their paintings along with Berry. 6
SWS RECENT EVENTS SWS Participates in RISD K-12 Visual Arts Celebration SWS is partnering with the Richardson Independent School District to support their art programs and participated at the Youth Art Month Ex- hibit & Celebration on March 26. We are also looking for volunteers to work before or during the fundraiser, and we need your new or used art supplies, books, DVDs, easels and other paraphernalia to be sold in the silent auction. SWS UPCOMING EVENTS April Membership Meeting and Workshop - Ron Stocke Join us at Lover’s Lane United Methodist Church at the corner of Northwest Highway and Inwood Road to attend the last demonstration of the 2018-2019 Membership year. Ron Stocke (pronounced Stoke), an award winning painter from Everett, Washington, will be the featured artist. Images of his paintings have been shown in Watercolor Artist Magazine and in the Splash series and on products throughout North America. Stocke is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society and the Northwest Wa- tercolor Society, an Elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor, and the American Im- pressionist Society. He paints and teaches workshops in North America and Europe throughout the year. Ron Stocke believes that the challenges of watercolor compel artists to paint with integrity and the resulting paintings are inevitably unique. His enthusiasm for the medium results from its abiltiy to capture light, shadow and reflective surfaces. He said that “Each year I care less and less about the details of my subject and more about capturing the energy of my subject in the fewest brushstrokes I can. You have to keep it simple, Therefore, I’m always thinking SIMPLIFY.” He encourages artists to avoid judging their work against any standards but their own.” Please join us for the April Meeting and a terrific workshop on April 9, 2019. For more information aboutt he workshop, please go to the SWS Website at https://www.swswatercolor.org/workshops/ron-stocke-3-day-workshop.
