On May 20th and 21st, Aurora will hold its 10th Biannual Meeting proudly organised by the University of Iceland. This Online Biannual will be a unique and exciting event where Aurora academics, students, university leaders and administrators will come together to continue ongoing work, meet new colleagues, celebrate existing friendships and reflect on the future of our ambitious cooperation! The Biannual programme features addresses from Adrienn Király from the European Commission, Lilja Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Education, Science and Culture of Iceland, Jón Atli Benediktsson, rector of the University of Iceland and President of the Aurora Universities Network and Mirjam van Praag, President of the Executive Board at the VU and President of the Aurora European Universities Alliance. Over the two days we will also have a mix of open informative sessions, perfect for those that are not yet involved in the work of Aurora but eager to learn more, and closed working sessions for colleagues that are working hard to deliver on our various ambitious projects. The Biannual will also give us a chance to reflect on the changing landscape in higher education, in particular in a panel discussion featuring Prof. Paul Boyle, the vice-chancellor of Swansea University, UK and EUA Vice- President, Prof. Yassine Lakhnech, president of the University of Grenoble Alpes, and Emily Reise, member of the Student Council of the University of Iceland and Aurora Student Council Secretary. Aurora also welcomes President Joan Gabel of the University of Minnesota as a guest of honour. President Gabel will take part in the “Sustainability” session and share her views on the topic. Registration & Virtual venue The virtual conference platform will allow us to switch between formal sessions and meeting informally and casually as we see each other passing Biannual information by the Aurora Biannual lounges. Biography Speakers Lilja Alfredsdottir - Minister of Education, Science and Culture of Ice- land Lilja Alfredsdottir is Iceland‘s Minister of Education, Science and Culture and former Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade. Ms. Alfredsdottir is also a member of Parliament. Before her participation in politics, Ms. Alfredsdottir served as Deputy Director of the Central Bank of Iceland’s General Secretariat and International Affairs Department. Since her graduation from Columbia University, Ms. Alfredsdottir, has been a central banker, apart from temporary secondments to Iceland’s Prime Minister’s Office as a Special Liaison and previously, to the International Monetary Fund’s Nordic-Baltic Executive Office as an Advisor. Ms. Alfredsdottir holds a master’s degree in International Economic Policy from Columbia University and received a Fulbright grant during her studies. She holds an undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Iceland. She also studied at the University of Minnesota and Ewha University in Seoul. Ms. Alfredsdottir has written numerous articles on economic and educational affairs in Icelandic papers and international journals. In additions, Ms. Alfredsdottir has held presentations on economic affairs in the United States and Europe. Jón Atli Benediktsson - Rector of the University of Iceland and Presi- dent of the Aurora Universities Network Professor Jón Atli Benediktsson became President of the Governing Council and Rector of the University of Iceland in July 2015. Prior to taking office Jón Atli Benediktsson was a professor in the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was the Pro-Rector for Science and Academic Affairs from 2009, and served in various other administrative capacities within the University of Iceland. Professor Benediktsson received his Ph.D. from Purdue University, USA in 1990. His research is in the areas of remote sensing, image analysis, signal processing and biomedical engineering and he has published over 300 papers and book chapters in his field. Professor Benediktsson has been a member of the Science and Technology Policy Council of Iceland since 2012. He is the Chair of the Icelandic Rectors´ Conference and sits on the council of the European University Association. Jón Atli was elected President of the Aurora Universities Network in 2020. 04
Mirjam van Praag - President of the Executive Board Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Mirjam van Praag was appointed President of the Executive Board at the VU on March 1st 2018. After having worked at Procter & Gamble, Intomart and The Boston Consulting Group, Van Praag committed herself to a career in science in 1998. She held successive positions at the University of Amsterdam, first as Associate Professor in Organizational Economics and later as Professor in Entrepreneurship and Organization. In 2014, Van Praag took on the position of Professor in Entrepreneurship at the Copenhagen Business School. In addition to her professorship, she has held a range of various ancillary positions. Van Praag was a crown member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (2010 – 2018), and has served on various advisory boards and academic networks, both in the public and private sector. She was the first director and driving force behind the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE). Yassine Lakhnech - President Université Grenoble Alpes Yassine Lakhnech is a graduate of the University of Kiel in Germany, specializing in program verification and provable security, and the links between logic and calculation models. He is a Professor at Université Grenoble Alpes. He was involved in several structuring projects for the university, including the Labex Persyval-lab, the PILSI campus operation (IMAG) and the Université Grenoble Alpes Excellence Initiative (IDEX). He has held numerous teaching responsibilities, served as deputy vice-president of research at Université Joseph Fourier (UJF) as well as vice-president of research at UJF and executive director of the research and development component of the excellence initiative. Neil Ward - Deputy Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs at University of East Anglia Neil Ward is Deputy Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and is the strategic lead for all educational and student-related activity at the University. UEA has an outstanding reputation for the quality of its student experience and holds a ‘Gold’ rating in the UK’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Neil joined UEA in 2008 as Executive Dean of Social Sciences. He was appointed DVC in 2014. He began his academic career at University College London. He is a human geographer, specialising in rural and regional development, has held chairs at the University of Leeds and Newcastle, and was Director of Newcastle University’s 05
Centre for Rural Economy from 2004 to 2008. He has also worked for periods on secondment to the Prime Minister’s Performance and Innovation Unit in the Cabinet Office and as an advisor to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Neil is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is also UEA’s executive lead on internationalisation. He chair’s the Aurora Vice Presidents for Education Group. Paul Boyle - Vice-Chancellor Swansea University and EUA Vice- President Professor Paul Boyle was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Swansea University in 2019. Prior to this he was President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester. Previously, Paul was Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the UK’s largest funding agency for social science research; the International Champion of Research Councils UK, with responsibility for international strategy on behalf of all seven UK research councils; and President of Science Europe, representing over 50 European funding agencies. Paul is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academy of Social Sciences. He is Chair of Universities Wales’ Research and Innovation Network; a Board Member of Universities UK, as well as Chair of their Research Policy Network; Vice-President and Council Member of the European University Association which represents over 800 universities in 48 countries; and Chair of the ONS Research Accreditation Panel. Barbara Buchenau - Vice-Rector of Social Responsibility, Diversity & International Affairs at the University of Duisburg-Essen Dr. Barbara Buchenau is Vice-Rector of Social Responsibility, Diversity & International Affairs at the University of Duisburg- Essen, Germany, where she also teaches North American Cultural Studies as a Full Professor. In her administrative work, Buchenau cooperates with university committees, faculty and administrative staff to develop shared standards for the university’s numerous collaborations with international actors at home in the fields of academia, politics, business, society and education. For this work, the SDGs 4, 5, 9, 16 and 17 are crucial. In her research, Buchenau addresses the evolution of North American (anti-) urban imaginaries across the centuries. As the speaker of the Graduate Research Group “Scripts for Postindustrial Urban Futures: American Models, Transatlantic Interventions” she works with urban developers and researchers in the US and Germany to better understand the problematic legacy of the rust belts left by the montane industry in North America and Europe. 06
Adrienn Király - Head of the Cabinet to Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Education, Culture and Youth. Adrienn Király joined the European Commission in 2007 and is now Head of the Cabinet to Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Education, Culture and Youth. Adrienn started her career in Brussels in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice, Freedom and Security dealing with international relations and coordinated visa liberalisation dialogues with the Western Balkan countries. In 2010 Adrienn joined Directorate-General for Home Affairs where she continued her work as coordinator for the Western Balkans. From September 2011 to March 2014 Adrienn was an inter-institutional coordinator at Directorate-General for Justice. In April 2014 she joined the Cabinet of the Vice-President of the European Commission, Ms Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship. From July 2014 to October 2014 she was a Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Martine Reicherts, Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship. From November 2014 November 2019, Adrienn was the Head of Cabinet of Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. As from December 2019, Adrienn is the Head of Cabinet to Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Education, Culture and Youth. Adrienn studied at University of Economic Sciences in Budapest (M.Sc. in Economics and International Relations), at the Robert Schuman University in Strasbourg (DEA de Science Politique) and at the ELTE University, Faculty of Law in Budapest (Post graduate studies for a Master’s degree in law). Adrienn speaks fluent English and French. John Style - Vice-Rector for Internationalization at the Universtitat Rovira i Virgili John Style has been Vice-Rector for Internationalization at the Universtitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, Spain since May 2018. B.A. in English from the University of London, he was awarded a doctorate in English Philology at the URV in 1997. He is a lecturer in contemporary British literature in the Department of English and German Studies, where he has taught courses from Anglo-Saxon literature, Shakespeare and John Milton, up to and including 21st century literature. He also teachers in an interuniversity Master’s course on Music and Artistic Expression, and in a Professional Translation Master, specialized in literary translation. His research areas are Contemporary British poetry and narrative, and the relationship between music and literature in Rock and Pop song lyrics. 07
At the URV since 1994, he has been a full-time senior lecturer since 2003, and has been elected director of his department on three occasions, as well as Dean of the Faculty of Letters. He is also a semi-professional pianist and guitarist. Karen van Oudenhoven - van der Zee - Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Prof. Dr. Karen van Oudenhoven - van der Zee is professor of organizational psychology (PhD, University of Groningen, 1996) with a specific interest in diversity management in an organizational context. She concurrently is dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and holds a chair in Intercultural Competency at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Her research interests cover intercultural competencies, social identity processes and organizational climate factors that have an impact on intercultural effectiveness of individuals and teams in organizations. She consulted organizations such as the Rijksmuseum and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Welfare on their diversity policies. Susanna Borras - Associate Professor of Public International Law Universitat Rovira i Virgili Susana Borras is an associate professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Department of Public Law and Director of the Master Degree of Environmental Law at Universitat Rovira i Virgili. She is a researcher at the Tarragona Center for Environmental Law Studies (CEDAT) and an Expert Member of the United Nations Harmony with Nature. She has been a researcher at different research centres on environmental Law: Committee on Challenges of Modern Society (NATO / CCMS) in Belgium (1999-2002); Max Planck Institut für ausländisches öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht, Heidelberg, Germany (2002-2007); Center of International Environmental Law (CIEL) in Washington, USA (2006); Center de Recherche of The Hague Academy of International Law and International Relations on the Implementation of Environmental Law (2008) and Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina -UFSC (2013). Susana’s recent publications address the study of access and sharing of benefits derived from genetic resources, bioprospecting, environmental refugees, climate change, human rights and the environment, the registration, evaluation and authorization of chemical substances and preparations and the participation of local authorities in the European Union. 08
David Kosina - Executive Manager at the Confucius Institute of Palacký University Olomouc David Kosina has a master degree in Economic policy and administration, and currently, he is pursuing a doctoral degree in management. During his professional career, David has worked with education institutions and public bodies, including European Commission. With more than 15 years of direct experience with the management of projects focused on education and regional development, implemented by public or semi-public organisations, David has strong expertise in project design, project management and evaluation of project proposals for EU funding. In 2017, David joined academia as a member of the Department of Economic and Managerial Studies at Palacky University Olomouc. His research focus is international project management, intercultural management and management of global virtual teams. Besides his academic work, since 2018, David has been a member of the internationalisation team at the rector’s office of Palacky University, participating in strategic projects of Palacky University and managing international relations with partner institutions in China. David is a global person, striving to understand the principles of mutual understanding among cultures. His working languages are English, Spanish and native Czech. As a language enthusiast, he also speaks Mandarin Chinese, French, Portuguese and German. 09
