DAY ONE November 10, 2021, Morning: Photograph 2 species; Afternoon: Artist Kyle Sims demo. Kyle Sims was born in 1980 and raised near Cheyenne, Wyoming, out in the country. He had a good childhood that included producing drawings of dinosaurs at five years old that eventually morphed into an interest in depicting the living wildlife of today. At the age of 13, his interest in this began to grow a great deal and by the age of 16, he knew he wanted to pursue the life of a wildlife artist for the rest of his life. He began taking workshops, trying to soak up as much information as possible, as quickly as possible. After high school, he attended Rocky Mountain College, where he earned his four year degree in Art. During this time, he met his wife-to-be Joylene. They became married in 2005. In 2018, they were blessed with a son named Isaak. He keeps them busy and is an endless source of entertainment. After College, Kyle was forced to take a job as a package handler for Fed Ex Ground to pay the bills. This included four hour shifts, which enabled Kyle to paint much of the rest of the day. Fotunately, after about eight or nine months of this, Kyle had sold some paintings and was able to paint full time going forward. In 2004, he joined Trailside Galleries and was invited to participate in the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale. In 2009, he was invited to participate in the Prix De West show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as well as the Masters of the American West in Los Angeles, California. In 2009 he was awarded the Major General and Mrs. Don D. Pittman Wildlife Award from the Prix De West for his piece “Summer Rumble”. Also in 2009, he was awarded Best in Show from the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale. In 2013 and 2016, he was awarded the Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award from the Masters of the American West. Also in 2016, he was awarded the Bob Kuhn award for drawing from Western Visions, which is held at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming. “Quiet Descent” © Kyle Sims PG 1
DAY TWO November 11, 2021, Morning: Photograph 2 species; Afternoon: Artist Greg Beecham demo. After a forty-three-year career of painting wildlife art, Greg Beecham is no less passionate to learn and grow as an artist than he was that first full-time day in late summer of 1978. He struggled for many years to define his vision and improve his technical skills. Forced to slow down and ponder life and work as he lay in a hospital bed for three days in 2013, he asked himself a simple question, “Who am I?” In other words, “What am I trying to say as an Artist and how do I go about saying it?” His conclusion was that he must take the tools of his trade; color, value, texture, edges, drawing and composition and, in his work, strive toward unity in the context of simplicity and beauty. He is also fascinated with creating the illusion of mass, weight and volume on a two- dimensional surface. Beecham considers his life work as an artist to be a journey. There have been few paintings that have come close to matching his vision. But he continues to press on, hoping to match vision with reality. He believes his talent, opportunity, and passion to paint are gifts from God, and that it is his responsibility to pursue excellence in art and be a blessing to those who view his work. Beecham’s work is included in permanent collections of the Gilcrease Museum- Tulsa, OK, The National Museum of Wildlife Art – Jackson, WY, The James Museum – Tampa, FL, The Briscoe Museum – San Antonio, TX, The Booth Museum – Cartersville, GA, and The Montana Historical Museum – Helena, MT. He is a six-time winner of the Prix de West Wildlife Art Award at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City as well as the Prix de West Buyer’s Choice Award. He has received the artist’s choice and collector’s choice awards at the Night of Artists Show at the Briscoe Museum in San Antonio. Beecham’s work has been covered in numerous magazines such as Southwest Art and Art of the West. His work has graced the covers of the following magazines, Safari Magazine (3 times), Southwest Art (twice), Western Art Collector (twice), Bugle, Wildlife Art News, and U.S. Art. Greg has been married to Lu Beecham for 43 years. They have a son and a daughter, both grown, whom they are very proud of. “Gone Fishin” © Greg Beecham PG.2
DAY THREE November 12, 2021, Morning: Photograph 2 species; Afternoon: Artists Dan and Adam Smith demos. “River Rapture” One of America’s foremost wildlife artists, Daniel Smith enjoys wide acclaim for his depictions of the natural world. Born in Minnesota, he now resides in Bigfork Montana, where he is inspired by his surroundings. One of the most rewarding elements of his work is doing fieldwork, which is the genesis of all his paintings. Smith is passionate about his subjects and travels frequently in search of artistic inspiration. His meticulous field research and insistence on directly observing the animals he paints is driven by a personal penchant to achieve greater authenticity. © Dan Smith Born in Edina, Minnesota and raised in Bozeman, Montana, Smith has spent thirty-seven years surrounded by the incredible wonders of western wildlife and has mastered the art of its accurate rendering. Smith studies nature with the acute eye of a scientist, yet, recreates it with the gingerly hands of a painter. He is no stranger to fine art as he is the son of famous wildlife artist, Daniel Smith. Yet, make no mistake, this young artist sets himself apart from the competition and has already garnered much success in the art world. An avid traveler and cross- country explorer, Smith finds inspiration from trips he and his father have taken to Africa, Alaska, Utah, and dozens of National Parks in between. © Adam Smith PG 3
