The Vanguard Keeps the Sausage Hits Coming By Franz Buchholtz Since 2014, Bay View bar and restaurant The Vanguard, 2659 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., has Leslie Rightmire, Mortgage Lender served up classic sausage and drink combinations with new twists. A social hub, the Vanguard is also an homage to cheesy music videos and televised wrestling matches. p: (262) 422-7989 f: (262) 912-3877 bankfivenine.com/leslierightmire The Vanguard has had to think of new ways to keep its staff and customers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, and is currently open for carryout and delivery only. “It’s been weird and rough. Takeout Trips: Mexic 103 By Catherine Jozwik Picking up Mexican food for lunch on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon seemed just the ticket to making the day a little brighter. My husband, Franz, and I decided to order from Mexic 103 Mexican Restaurant. After reading great things about the restaurant on social media, I was excited to try it. Located at 3506 E. Layton Ave. in Cudahy, Mexic 103, which opened in 2018, features Mexican cuisine staples; for example, enchiladas, chimichangas, and a variety of tacos and burritos. House dishes include the Baja Burrito (flour tortilla with pan-seared shrimp, white onions, tomato, cilantro, garlic butter sauce, and more). The chicken Parallel Coaching and Design, LLC tamales platter (topped with ranchera or green sauce, fresh cheese and more) mole enchiladas, and Quesadilla Supreme are other favorites. Jessica Newton, Founder Mexic 103 also offers several vegan/vegetarian options such as the veggie burrito, and appetizers such as empanadas, fiesta nachos, and chorizo fries. The restaurant is cur- jessican@live-parallel.com, 414-215-0659 rently open for takeout orders and delivery only. live-parallel.com I placed our order--the house enchiladas with steak for Franz, three vegan tacos for myself, and chips and guacamole--by phone. The wait time was only 30 minutes; per- What’s your plan for getting back to balance? fect timing, because Franz had to first run to the pet store and pick up wet cat food for His Highness, Mr. Meatball. He was greeted at Mexic 103 by a pleasant staff member. Franz’s steak enchiladas were flavorful, without being overly heavy, and came with a savory red and spicy green sauce. My vegan tacos, made with a house-made, plant- based “meat,” were well-seasoned with a sort of yummy barbecue flavor and fresh cilantro. A bit of green sauce mixed in with a side of sour cream and juice from a slice of lime added deliciousness. Both meals came with a side of beans and seasoned rice. Since I’m trying to reduce my dairy intake, I opted for no cheese on my beans. The crunchy chips and tasty guacamole was the perfect appetizer. Mexic 103 offers a number of meat choices for its a la carte items, including al pastor, steak, chicken, ground beef, and vegan meat. Customers can also order other sauce sides, such as cilantro jalapeno ($.75 for a small container; $5 for an 8-oz container, and $10 for a 1-lb container). Mexic 103’s portions are generous and its prices are reasonable--around $11 a meal. I ate half of my food for lunch and saved the rest for dinner! Takeout Trips: Bangkok House By Catherine Jozwik Longtime St. Francis restaurant Bangkok House, located at 4698 S. Whitnall Ave., serves authentic Thai cuisine in a classy atmosphere. It had been a while since my hus- band Franz and I had ordered from Bangkok House. Last Thursday, like many other days this month, was cold and rainy. Neither of us felt like cooking, so we decided to boost our Submitted photo spirits and order some tasty Thai cuisine for carryout. I ordered the yellow curry with chicken, and Franz ordered the jungle curry. Since the curries come in thin sauce, we added an extra side of rice to soak it all up. 2430 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. • Bay View The yellow curry flavors are incredible--the sauce is a blend of coconut milk with a Call or text 414-744-2275 good amount of spices added to produce some heat. The dish also comes with onions Email: bayview@communitybark.net and potatoes. The yellow curry is a rich entree, so I was only able to eat half of it for dinner--which meant I had plenty left over for lunch the next day. Lucky me! One word www.communitybark.net/locations/bayview/ of warning--Thai cuisine, even if it touts certain dishes as “mild,” tends to be quite spicy. Keeping some milk or yogurt nearby will help mitigate the heat on your taste buds. The jungle curry includes bamboo shoots and healthy veggies such as mushrooms, baby corn, carrots and bell peppers. The Bangkok House menu describes the curry as SPICY!--and it’s not kidding. I took a bite of it and thought my face was on fire. Once the heat wore off, though, I could taste the basil leaves and other nice, subtle flavors. Franz, who has a high tolerance for spicy foods, enjoyed the curry. He was sweat- ing considerably after he finished it, though, but that’s a good thing--spicy foods help eliminate toxins from the body and clear sinuses.
