events have been disrupted by the impact of the
coronavirus, Cirencester is still very much open for business and has
something for everyone to safely enjoy.
We are proud of and admired for our independent shops, individual food
and incredible history. Our local businesses have worked tirelessly during
this very difficult year and now it's our turn to support them. By shopping
locally and supporting the businesses at the heart of your community, you
can help our town to stay vibrant and unique.
Working closely with our town centre businesses, this 2020 Local Shopping
Guide has been created to publicise the great shopping opportunities that
are available on our doorstep.
Read on for special offers, vouchers and discounts. Don't miss your
chance to enter our prize draw by completing the Shop Local Challenge.

In 2020, we faced unprecedented challenges and concerns; as a nation and local
community, we haven’t experienced a time which has impacted on everyone and every
aspect of life for decades and we are still faced with uncertainty. Our role and remit, as
a town council, is to listen and respond.
Having a vibrant town centre is key to social, economic and environmental well-being.
In 2019, we joined in partnership with Cotswold District Council to prepare a master
plan for the town centre. This process is very much focused on the future and we
recognise that businesses and retail need our help and support in the here and now.
Our Chief Executive, Andrew Tubb and Becky Coles, Community Services Manager, now meet regularly
with the Chamber of Commerce and local business representatives. They are exploring opportunities and
initiatives which will support the local economy and as we consider the budget for 2021-22, it is important
we look at setting aside contributory funding for recovery and a renewed sense of hope.
We want people to feel safe coming back into town and even though we are faced with the loss of retailers,
equally we know how important the town centre is; there are many in society who are lonely or experience
loneliness. From young people through to the elderly, being able to access the town centre and have a
reason to visit is really important; it may be the only contact someone has in their week and why our focus is
on creating a sense of community in the heart of our town.
It is vital, if we are to survive COVID and the impact of on-line shopping, that we re-brand and promote
Cirencester as a safe space and a place in which to experience culture, community, hospitality as well as
retail, inclusive of everyone in society.
Cirencester Town Council have collaborated with the Barn Theatre on two special festive projects
this Christmas.
This year, Santa will be reading his fabled stories to entertain children and families online rather than
at the Advent Festival. Santa, also known as the Yarn Whisperer when it’s not Christmas, will be
reading his stories on our social media channels and YouTube in the weeks before Christmas. Settle
down in the warmth and comfort of your own home and hear all about life at the North Pole.
We’re also very excited to have worked with the Barn Theatre to produce a seasonal video to show-
case the town at this special time of year. Filming began in October, taking place around town and
at the Grade II listed, Ingleside House. A number of town centre retailers agreed to take part in some
special scenes which were filmed over a number of days throughout the month.
The video will capture the town in all its glory and will include the wonderful architecture and unique-
ness of the town and streets so everyone can see what a beautiful place it is. It will be used across
social media to promote the town and will be circulated around tourist information centres.
The creative minds at the Barn have penned a magical Christmas story just for Cirencester, befitting
of any big name Christmas ad. The story centres around a family at Christmas getting everything
they need in Cirencester… why go anywhere else?

33The Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Window Competition will be going ahead as usual this year, but there will be a twist… All participating shops will be hiding a numbered bauble in their window. All you need to do, is download the competition sheet and match the business name with the correct bauble number. You will also need to write down your favourite window before handing the sheet in. The entry with the most correctly numbered baubles will win a prize. The owner of the most voted for shop window will be presented with the Peter Stringfellow Memorial Trophy.
