Green Point Christian College Primary School Handbook 2021 Welcome to Green Point Christian College. We trust this is the beginning of a long association from which both you and your family will richly benefit. It can sometimes be challenging for children to start at a new school, yet we are hopeful that our friendly staff, children and parent body will help both you and your son or daughter to settle in quickly. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to speak with your child’s Class Teacher. Right from the beginning we will be endeavouring to teach your children about the things of God, along with paying close attention to their academic, social, emotional and physical development. After settling in, children will discover a variety of ways they can become further involved in College life; including Chess Club, Choir, Band, Student Representative Council, Sporting Teams and Electives. This Handbook will help you and your child with daily routines and expectations, and there is important information contained here to make his or her life at school as simple as possible. A great way to know what is happening in the College community is to read our communication newsletter called “The Messenger”, sent via our parent portal, called “Parent Lounge”, weekly to College families. This gives information about upcoming events and current College news. I encourage you to start reading it even now before you join us. There are people who pray regularly for the College and our students. Be encouraged, those people are praying for your children. We trust that God will bless your family and your children as they undertake their schooling here at Green Point Christian College. So welcome to the beginning of an exciting learning journey for your child, partnering together with the College community, for Excellence in Christ Centred Education. We have a wonderful team ready to assist you. May God bless you and your child on their learning journey. Nicole Smith Head of Primary 2

Morning Assemblies (Monday and Friday) Before going into class, children meet briefly together on the top quadrangle, for announcements and presentations. Absences and Lateness If your child is arrives after 9am, they will need to go to the Office to get a late note prior to going to the classroom. If you need to pick up your child early, please send along a note to the teacher. The teacher will send your child to the Office for pick up. Then you can sign them out. All students need to be sent down to meet you at the Office rather than picking them up at the classrooms. The school has a legal responsibility to keep records of attendance for all students. Any absence from school should be explained in a note to the office, via email to Absentees@gpcc.nsw.edu.au or by phoning the College’s Absentee Line on 43 679 950 before 9:30am on the day of their absence. Well-being - A positive approach Disciplinary matters are generally handled by the classroom teacher. Each class has their own behaviour/ reward systems recognising effort in both academic and behavioural areas. This includes certificates, stickers and class rewards. As well as this, each teacher nominates a student to receive a “Head of Primary School Award”, who is acknowledged at Chapel and presented with a certificate. Encouragement Awards called “Green Points” are given by teachers to students for a wide variety of positive actions or achievements. Discipline in the Primary School should be an extension of the discipline that takes place in the home. When disciplining children we try to find the appropriate balance between demonstrating grace and helping the students recognise there are consequences for their actions. Our Behaviour Management Policy can be found on the College Website (www.gpcc.nsw.edu.au). Lines of Communication If a situation arises which needs to be addressed, in the first instance, it is appropriate to speak directly to the class teacher. If the situation is still not resolved, the next step is to speak to the Head of Primary School, and if appropriate, the Principal. Parents and teachers are encouraged to use email to communicate. Due to the large number of emails received, teachers have a 3-day turn around policy. If it is urgent, please call the Office and leave a message to be passed on. Parents are also welcome to meet with teachers in a scheduled meeting at a mutually convenient time. 6

Green Point Christian College Primary School Handbook 2021 Curriculum 1. The Curriculum followed in Primary School is based on the NSW Education Standard Authority (NESA) requirements. The NESA Website is: www.educationstandards.nsw.edu.au. 2. Our teachers have developed high quality programs that focus on the cognitive engagement of students, so that they can be active and engaged learners. Explicit teaching outlines clear directions and goals in each lesson. Lessons are presented in a manner that develops creativity, critical thinking and problem- solving skills, using a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. Our teachers construct lessons around skill development in areas such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, reflection, collaborative learning and hands on guided investigations. Students are assessed on their knowledge and understanding at regular intervals and provided with an outline of clear success criteria, so that learning intentions are known. 3. A Christian worldview is integrated throughout the curriculum and classrooms. 4. All students attend a specialist lesson each week in the areas of IT, Japanese, Music and Physical Education. 5. Key Learning Areas in the Primary School include: English Mathematics Science and Technology Creative Arts: Drama, Dance, Visual Arts, Music Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) Human Society and its Environment (HSIE): Geography and History Languages: Japanese Biblical Studies 9
Green Point Christian College Primary School Handbook 2021 Extend OSHC at Green Point Christian College - Program of activities There are so many exciting activities planned at Extend. Some of these planned activities include, art and craft, science experiments, homework club, cooking, plenty of outdoor games and sports such as basketball, handball, soccer and much more! Who can attend? The program is open to all children aged 5 - 12 years of age, who are enrolled on LookedAfter. Making an enrolment – No enrolment fees Our registration system is a purpose-built platform, named LookedAfter. It is a user-friendly online platform which provides families with flexibility and control of their account and bookings from a mobile device. We recommend that all parents enrol their child in LookedAfter to ensure that, if and when emergencies arise, your child has a safe and engaging place to play until you arrive. Before your child can attend the Extend service, they must be enrolled to ensure we have all current medical information and emergency contacts. Each child’s safety is our paramount concern and so we hope that you will work with us to be proactive and enrol your child. Please go to https://www.lookedafter.com for bookings and fee information. For information on the child care subsidy, please visit our website or use our Fee Relief Calculator. Ultimate Booking Flexibility Families can book online up to the last minute prior to the start time of their service, as bookings are now registered in our system instantaneously! If you make a booking for your child on the same day that the booking will take place, please also contact the school office to communicate your child’s movements at the end of the school day. We would like the children to transition from their school day to after school care smoothly and this process will really help us to do so. We appreciate your co-operation. Medication If your child has a medical need that requires medication, we ask that you provide the Extend service with a copy of the required medication. It is our priority to ensure your child’s safety. We must therefore have your child’s medication stored onsite to ensure it is within reach if an emergency occurs. Green Point Christian College Primary School Handbook for 2021 Traffic Management Plan For Our Children’s Safety This Traffic Management Plan has been produced with the paramount aim of the safety of children when they arrive or leave the College. Compliance with this Plan will also improve traffic flow in peak periods. 1. SPEED LIMIT is strictly 10kph and is a share pedestrian/vehicle area. Please take great care in the carpark to avoid injury or incident. 2. Revised Traffic entrances/exits and Procedures are waiting for completion of works during 2020. 3. TRAFFIC WARDENS will be on duty during peak periods to supervise the movement of students and vehicles. Please follow their instructions. 4. PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS, monitored by Traffic Wardens, should be used in order to promote the safe separation of pedestrians and vehicles. 5. Any PRE-SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN are to be supervised at all times, including holding hands whenever possible. 6. Kiss and Drop zones are supervised • Display your surname in your windscreen • If your children are not ready for collection you will need to park and collect for P3, or flow back around for P1. 7. As is the case on public roads, MOBILE PHONES should not be used whilst driving in the car park area. 8. Please take care when OPENING CAR DOORS as that can injure pedestrians and/or cause damage to vehicles. 9. Do not park in adjacent business. 10. Gate 2 and P2 is only for the Little Coasties parents and those on Church Business, unless you hold a permit. 11. Students are to park in student designated carparks. 12. Students travelling on BUSES must use the covered walkway when walking to or from buses and must not use the car park. 13. Observations or suggestions in relation to pedestrian safety and traffic flow are welcome and should be emailed to aritchie@gpcc.nsw.edu.au 20
