Sixth Sunday After Epiphany 13 February 2022 The resurrection of Christ – Andrea Mantegna 8am Eucharist (BCP) 10am Sung Eucharist (also via YouTube) Setting: Misa Suessionensis – Daniel Riley
From the Associate Priest Dear parishioners and friends, The CCGS School hymn is ‘Let us build a house’, and it speaks of both the Church and School as places where people find themselves welcomed, loved and supported. The refrain to each verse affirms that ‘all are welcome in this place’, and I am often moved by this declaration of love and community when we sing this hymn. As we continue through the Covid-19 pandemic, we need to make sure that everyone feels welcome and safe when they come to CCSY. To make sure we’re doing this to the best of our ability, there are some questions I would like to ask you all: • What could we do to help you feel more welcome here at Christ Church, especially during Covid? • Are there specific things that make you feel reluctant to come to Church? • Is there something we could do to help or make you feel more comfortable and confident in coming to Church? If there is something we could do, please let us know – either getting in touch with me (efraser@ccsy.org.au) or the Parish Office (ccoffice@ccsy.org.au). If you’d like to have a conversation on the phone, please call – I’d be delighted to speak with you (03 9866 4434). Our aim is to make sure everyone feels welcome, safe and healthy while worshipping at Christ Church, now and into the future. Best wishes, and many blessings, - Mtr Emily. GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME We gather in this sacred space on the traditional lands of the Kulin nations, and we respectfully acknowledge the current and past elders of the Wurundjeri and Boonerwrung peoples. All stand when the entrance bell is rung Father all-loving and ruling in majesty, judgment is yours, and condemns all our pride; stir up our rulers and people to penitence, sorrow for sins that for vengeance have cried. Blessèd Lord Jesus, born humbly in poverty, sharing a stable with beasts at your birth, stir us to work for your justice and charity, truly to care for the poor upon earth. Come, Holy Spirit, create in us holiness, lift up our lives to your standard of right; stir every will to new ventures of faithfulness, flood the whole church with your glorious light. Holiest Trinity, perfect in unity, bind in your love every nation and race: may we adore you for time and eternity, Father, Redeemer and Spirit of grace. Patrick Robert Norman Appleford 1925– alt. Words by permission The United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, London Reproduced with permission Tune: Was lebet TiS 160 In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Words of welcome 3
Let us pray together Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy. Christe eleison. Christ, have mercy. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in excelsis Deo Glory to God in the highest et in terra pax hominibus bonæ voluntatis. and on earth peace, goodwill to all people. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. We praise you. We bless you. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. We worship you. We glorify you. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. We give you thanks for your great glory. Domine Deus. Rex cœlestis. Lord God. Heavenly King. Deus Pater omnipotens. God the Father Almighty. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Domine Deus. Agnus Dei. Filius Patris. Lord God. Lamb of God. Son of the Father. Qui tollis peccata mundi, You take away the sin of the world, miserere nobis. have mercy on us. Qui tollis peccata mundi, You take away the sin of the world, suscipe deprecationem nostram. receive our prayer. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, You are seated at the right hand of the Father, misrere nobis. have mercy upon us. Quoniam tu solus sanctus. For you alone are the holy one. 4
Tu solus Dominus. You alone are the Lord. Tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe. You alone are the most High, Jesus Christ. Cum Sancto Spiritu. With the Holy Spirit in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. Righteous God, you challenge the powers that rule this world and you show favour to the oppressed: instil in us a true sense of justice, that we may discern the signs of your kingdom and strive for right to prevail; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD All sit A reading from the book of Jeremiah 17:5-10 Thus says the Lord: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. it is perverse—who can understand it? I the Lord test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. 5
PSALM 1 Repeat response after the Choir, then sing as indicated 1. Blessed are they who have not walked in the counsel of the ungodly: nor followed the way of sinners, nor taken their seat amongst the scornful. 2. But their delight is in the law of the Lord: and on that law will they ponder day and night. R 3. They are like trees planted beside streams of water: that yield their fruit in due season. 4. Their leaves also shall not wither: and look, whatever they do, it shall prosper. R 5. As for the ungodly, it is not so with them: they are like the chaff which the wind scatters. 6. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand up at the judgement: nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 7. For the Lord cares for the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish. R Response: Kathleen Boschetti (b. 1936) TiS 42 Verse Chant: M D Fulcher A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians 15:12-20 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ—whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. 6
All stand Not the powerful, not the privileged, not the famous in the land, but the no-ones and the needy were the first to hold God’s hand. Not a well-established family with an heirloom christening shawl, but a homeless, wandering couple parented the Lord of All. Not, at first, to little children, nor to those whose faith burned bright, but to adults, stalled in darkness, angels brought God’s love and light. God, determined to be different from the standards we think best, in his choice of friends and family, lets forgotten folk be blessed. Not obsessed by our achievements, worldly wealth or family tree, may we, in and with God’s chosen, find our fondest pedigree. John L. Bell 1949– Words and music Innkeepers and Light Sleepers by permission Wild Goose Publications Tune: Pedigree. TiS 288 Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Alleluia. 7
The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 6:17-26 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. ‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. ‘Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. ‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. ‘Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. ‘Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. ‘Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. All sit Sermon – The Revd Marilyn Hope All stand Let us together affirm the faith of the Church: We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. 8
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. All kneel or sit Let us pray for the world and for the Church. After each prayer …hear our prayer. After thanksgiving for those who have died Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon them. Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All stand We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 9
No collection is taken during the hymn. Instead, there is a retiring collection at the end of the service. All my hope on God is founded; all my trust he will renew, through all change and chance he guides me, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray our trust; all we build with care and labour, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God’s power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. God’s great goodness lasts for ever, deep his wisdom, passing thought; splendour, light and life attend him, beauty springing out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. Daily the almighty giver will his bounteous gifts bestow; in his will our souls find pleasure, leading us where’er we go. Love will stand at his hand, joy shall wait for his command. 10
Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Hear Christ call one and all: those who follow shall not fall. Robert Bridges 1844–1930 alt. after Joachim Neander 1650–80 Tune: Michael. TiS 560 The response to the Offertory Prayers is: Blessed be God for ever. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING … for ever praising you and singing… Sanctus. Sanctus. Sanctus. Holy. Holy. Holy. Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Lord God of Hosts. Pleni sunt cœli et terra gloria tua. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest. Benedictus qui venit. Blessed is he who comes in nomine Domini. in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in Excelsis. Hosanna in the highest. Great is the mystery of faith: … in songs of never-ending praise: 11
As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD & COMMUNION We who are many are one body: For we all share in the one bread. Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, miserere nobis. have mercy on us. Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, miserere nobis. have mercy on us. Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, dona nobis pacem. grant us peace. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Communicant members of any church are welcome to receive Holy Communion, which is administered in one kind only (the bread). If you would prefer a blessing, indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest. Please feel free to stand or kneel to receive Communion. During communion the choir will sing Beati quorum via, by C.V. Standford Let us pray. Living God, in this holy meal you fill us with new hope. May the power of your love, which we have known in word and sacrament, continue your saving work among us, give us courage for our pilgrimage, and bring us to the joys you promise, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 12
THE SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE Great God, your Spirit, like the wind unseen but shaking things we see will never leave us undisturbed fulfil our dreams, or set us free, until we turn from faithless fear and prove the promise of your grace in justice, peace and daily bread with joy for all the human race. Lord, shake us with the force of love, to rouse us from our dreadful sleep; remove our hearts of stone, and give new hearts of flesh, to break and weep for all your children in distress and dying for the wealth we keep. Help us prevent, while we have time, the blighted harvest greed must reap. And then, in your compassion, give your Spirit like the gentle rain, creating fertile ground from which your peace and justice spring like grain; until your love is satisfied, with all creation freed from pain, and all your children live to praise your will fulfilled, your presence plain. All stand Most loving God, you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage in the power of your Spirit. The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ. Thanks be to God. Today’s Mass Setting Today's Mass setting is by Daniel Riley, entitled Missa Suessionensis. This setting of the Latin mass is based on the famous chimes of Soissons in France, upon which Maurice Duruflé wrote his celebrated fugue, op. 12, Fugue sur le Thème de Carillon Des Heures de la Cathédrale de Soissons. Daniel Riley's setting, written for the parish of St John's East Malvern, has a certain French influence and is very singable.
