March 7, 2021 Third Sunday of Lent Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalemm. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, & doves, as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area. Jn 2:13b-15a

7th Commandment: You shall not steal At first glance this commandment seems pretty simple and straight forward; but when you dig a bit deeper, there’s more to it than meets the eye. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is a great resource for finding out what the Catholic Church teaches. The section on the ten commandments is quite extensive and covers each commandment individually. It also includes a summary at the end of each section that kind of gives you the high-level version that won’t tax your attention span. If you’re like me, you’ll really appreciate that! With regard to the 7th commandment, CCC begins its summary by quoting Saint Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians: “Neither thieves, nor the greedy …, nor robbers will inherit the Kingdom of God.” (1 Cor 6: 10). So, besides stealing, what does the 7th commandment actually tell us. Well, first it tells us that we must practice justice and charity in the administration of earthly goods and the fruits of men’s labor. Notice that this is a requirement for each of us, not the government or the church hierarchy. We are obliged to be just and charitable with the wealth that God has put under our control. The right to private property is universal, but it requires accountability to God. Obviously, the 7th commandment forbids theft; and the amount doesn’t matter. My mom always said that it doesn’t matter whether you steal a nickel or a million dollars, and it doesn’t matter who you steal it from, you’re still a thief. Kids generally understand this concept better than adults. When my daughter Theresa was seven years old, she took a peanut at the grocery store and ate it. It really messed with her conscience and she insisted that her mom take her to confession. But the 7th commandment also forbids every manner of taking and using another’s property unjustly. This includes cheating on your taxes. When this occurs, restitution is required. You need to make it right. So, you know those tools you borrowed from you next door neighbor last year; you need to return them within some reasonable time and if it’s been an unreasonably long time, you might want to give them a good bottle of wine or a bunch of flowers in addition. Acts that, for totalitarian or commercial purposes lead to the virtual enslavement of human beings, or to their being bought, sold or exchanged like merchandise are also prohibited. No, professional athletes aren’t slaves! That’s different. Finally, the dominion granted by the Creator over the mineral, vegetable and animal resources of the universe (not just the planet) cannot be separated from respect for moral obligations, including those toward generations to come. In addition, the most valuable resource the Lord gives us is time. We shouldn’t waste our own or that of others. So, you see, the 7th commandment is pretty comprehensive. Basically, though, it requires respect for the property of others and charity in the administration of the property that God has entrusted to each of us. God Bless DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BEGINS ON SUNDAY, MARCH 14th Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour!
