 ABOUT IRONDALE

Irondale exists at the intersection of art, education, community
engagement, and social justice. At the core of our work is the idea that
theater can lead us to a greater understanding of who we are, how we can
communicate with each other, and coexist with empathy and compassion
in an increasingly polarizing world.

 ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

During the month of March, when women are celebrated and honored all
around the world, Irondale hosts the On Women Festival, giving female-
identifying artists the platform to celebrate their own experiences.
Created in 2018, each iteration of this festival has been different and
unique, just like the creators and the shows that are part of it.
ON WOMEN 2021

MAINSTAGE: two different theatrical productions that will be selected
with the assistance of a diverse group of curators. The plays will be
performed and recorded at The Space at Irondale (with the possibility of a
limited live audience for the recordings) and streamed online at specific
dates and times, followed by virtual talkbacks with the creative team of
each production. (Accessibility: Closed captions)

NEW MEDIA STORYTELLING: this category is open for video submissions
of short pieces (between 10-25 minutes) that present elements of
theatrical storytelling. All videos will live on an online platform and the
audience will vote on their favorites. This category will not be curated but
we will offer four money prizes (1st, 2nd and 3rd places for Popular Vote,
and Curator’s Pick). We want to make sure we’re giving an alternative for
people who don’t feel safe leaving their homes, or artists who are
developing work using new media, or even artists who are in different
places in the world.

ART BUFFET: live online performances that are flexible in style and genre
such as, but not limited to, improv, music, performance, scripted
monologue. All content must be original (or an original adaptation), and
artists may choose to perform solo or with one other person. These
performances will be curated and we’ll select up to 10 pieces.

ARTISTS EXCHANGE: lead and moderated by our guest Curators, each
one of the three conversations will have a theme or topic for discussion,
and guest panelists. Audience members will be invited to participate by
asking questions or sharing opinions.
2020

In 2020, we invited international artists to be part of the lineup for the first
time, and announced a new format of the festival: with Main Stage shows,
Workshop productions, Artists Exchange (community focused panel
discussions), and a special performance by the Young New Yorkers Chorus
Women’s Ensemble on our closing night. The goal was to offer more
possibilities of interaction between artists and audience members, and with
our students.

Unfortunately, the festival had to be canceled when we were all hit by the
pandemic, but we were able to host one Artist Exchange panel and produce the
two Main Stage plays: "To Moscow! A Palimpsest", an adaptation of "Three
Sisters" created and performed by the Brazilian theater company S.A.I., and
the world premiere of "Night Shadows", written by Lynda Crawford.

          "To Moscow - A Palimpsest" "Night Shadows"
2019

The reimagined On Women Festival featured three completely different shows:
"Both Sides Now - The Music of Joni Mitchell", created by Hannah Reimann and
directed by Austin Pendleton, was a musical celebration of the 75th birthday
year of Joni Mitchell and the 50th anniversary of Woodstock; "Grounded" by
George Brant, a solo show with Maya Carter and directed by Cindy Rosenthal;
and the world premiere of "The Franca Rame Project", written by Italian
playwrights, actors and activists Franca Rame and Dario Fo at the height of the
second feminist wave in the 1970s, and directed by Zishan Ugurlu.

During two weeks in the Spring, this festival celebrated the different
experiences of women, with performers that hailed from different parts of the
country with both national and international credits.

 2018

  In 2018, the festival was called She Stands Alone and it consisted of two one-
  woman, self-written shows: "Running Into Me", written and performed by
  Vickie Tanner, and "Jellybean", written and performed by Lee Harrington.

  The running thread of the first year of our festival was that both of the shows
  were written by and about the lives of the women who performed it. Both
  shows were highly comedic in nature, but the themes were quite serious.
FESTIVAL GUIDELINES

             MAINSTAGE PRODUCTIONS
Irondale’s On Women Festival Mainstage productions will be performed in
The Space at Irondale to a closed house during the month of February
and captured for digital release on Irondale’s media platform during the
month of March. These events will be broadcasted on scheduled show
dates and times for ticketed patrons only.

Each Mainstage show should be a fully produced play (with set and
lighting design) and will be given the exciting opportunity to creatively
utilize one of the most unique theaters in New York (in conjunction with
Irondale staff as well as COVID precautions and safety measures).

The company will have 5 days total in the space for load in, set up, tech,
dress rehearsals, and performance capture. Each company will be allowed
to record 2 full runs of their production. The production teams will be
given the opportunity to work closely with Irondale’s recording crew to
realize the best recorded vision of their live performance. This may
include pick-ups, close-ups, etc.

Complete in the festival package, Irondale will provide a light board,
board op, house manager, and fireguard (F-03). Additionally, Irondale will
provide and execute recording, editing, and broadcasting of the
Mainstage productions in conjunction with our media production
partners.
Each production team will meet with Irondale’s technical director and the
festival producers to determine needs and requests. Designers are also
available upon request for a fee.

Safety is a primary consideration in the COVID-19 era. In compliance with
the CDC guidelines, no more than 15 company members are allowed to be
in the space at any given time. Everyone should wear masks at all times,
except actors when performing. Productions that are selected will be
expected to undergo adequate testing and COVID-Safety protocol in
accordance with State and Federal regulations.

To be considered, your project must:

    Be women-centered;
    Be a fully-produced play;
    Compensate all artists fairly;
    Be a NY premiere or not have been performed in the New York area
    within the last year (staged readings within the last year are an
    exception);
    Be an original work or have rights already obtained;
    Be submitted within festival consideration window:
    November 10 - December 21, 2020.

All submissions will be reviewed by the festival producers and selected by
our Curation Committee (Irondale team + guest curators).

If selected, your production will receive a $1,000 fee paid by the Irondale
Ensemble Project.
