16:45 – 17:30 Plenary Three – Public Health UKELA’s newest Working Party is “Public Health & Environmental Law” and has already drawn-in active participants from a wide variety of our membership. The working party has organised some very successful meetings already and is excited to host its first conference plenary. Do please get in touch with the Chair (and WP Co-ordinator) Veneta Cooney if you want to join up! The state of the environment is making us ill. The impact of pollution and the depletion of nature on our health warrants a seismic shift in narrative about why environmental protection is essential not only for future generations but for our families here and now. This plenary will explore the consequences of environmentally-related illness and explain why we need to change political and societal attitudes in order to tackle the threat of ecological collapse. Chair: Dr Veneta Cooney, UKELA Trustee Speakers: l Dr Andrew Lee, University of Sheffield l Professor Lorraine Maltby, University of Sheffield The UKELA conference is always the first one I book to attend each year. It is a priority for me because of the mix of attendees: the conference is not lawyers speaking to lawyers – there are speakers and attendees from industry, NGOs, government, regulators and academia and I really value the range of views and voices. Plus everyone is very friendly and welcoming” Estelle Dehon, Cornerstone Barristers UKELA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2019 | SHEFFIELD 6
17:30 – 18:15 Plenary Four – Education Keeping up to date with the latest developments in environmental law and practice is one of the hardest aspects of our professional lives – law and policy changes regularly and UKELA members need to stay abreast of changes both domestically and internationally. This plenary will give delegates a critical overview of recent case-law decisions and the headline changes arising from new statutory instruments and the Environment Bill. Chair: Dr Paul Stookes, UKELA WP and Brexit Advisor Speakers: l Matthew Fraser, Landmark Chambers l Simone Davidson and Sophie Wilkinson, Lexis Nexis l Paul Stookes, UKELA 18:15 – 18:30 AGM Friday night UKELAfest – with special guest, Magid Mah, Lord Mayor Sheffield The social and networking event of the UKELA calendar! Friday nights at UKELA conferences are relaxed and informal and are a great opportunity to mingle and meet new friends and colleagues. This year we have a ‘festival’ theme, so come along, enjoy some street food, music, and other entertainment. Hopefully we will avoid the festival traditions of rain and mud! I’ve been coming to UKELA conferences since 2012 and it’s always one of the highlights of my year. The presentations are interesting and informative and it is a welcoming environment to socialise and make new contacts. One of my research interests is the regulation of technology and innovation so I’m particularly looking forward to the plenary on green innovation.” Dr Olivia Hamlyn, University of Leicester UKELA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2019 | SHEFFIELD 7

11:50 – 13:15 Plenary Seven: BREXIT and the International Future BREXIT has dominated the political and legal headlines for two years and will likely do so for many more years. At the time of going to press, we don’t know what the landscape will look like at the time of our conference –will we have had a 2nd referendum and remain in the EU? Will we have left the EU completely, or will we be in a transition phase? Given the uncertainty, we don’t know what our distinguished panellists will be speaking about – in all probability things will change rapidly until the day of the conference! We have invited leading experts on environmental and international law and policy to discuss Brexit and its impact on environmental law at home and abroad. And we won’t be restricting our panellists to an “inside out” review, but instead we will hear from eminent speakers on what the rest of the world is thinking… Chair: Karen Blair, Cleaver Fulton Rankin Speakers: l Evanna Fruithof, Director Bar Council Brussels (pre-recorded film) l Amy Edwards, Holland & Knight, US ABA SEER Chair l Martin Baxter, Executive Director of Policy at IEMA l Professor Richard Macrory, UCL l Tom Burke, UKELA Patron 13:15 Lunch – packed lunch and WP sessions 14:30 Saturday afternoon excursions (see below for details) Gala Dinner 7.30pm drinks reception, followed by dinner at 8pm After dinner speaker (invited) The UKELA Conference is a calendar highlight in the environmental law arena – it consistently provides high quality and informative sessions and a fantastic platform for networking” Lucy Bruce Jones, Of Counsel, Norton Rose Fulbright LLP UKELA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2019 | SHEFFIELD 10
