EDITOR’s Letter Dear Shapians, In view of the latest news related to the evolution of the pandemic regarding vaccination figures and the so-called “herd immunity”, many of us began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Some begin to plan trips that were left pending, visits to family and friends, or even allow themselves to have a life relatively similar to that of two years ago. During this process I have read somewhere that the act of mentally hacking oneself can be positive when it comes to adapting to a phase for which we are not yet ready, since both our brain and our emotions are not fully adapted to that future reality. The mechanism to do so in principle is quite easy to achieve, but it takes time. Some of the best positivity hacks to nudge our minds into a more positive state are focused on our health: get some sunshine, drink water, take many breaks during the day, reduce the checking social media and emails, think about what makes you happier, concentrate on your breathing, overcome your negativity bias, deny to accept your self-limiting beliefs, and many more that you could develop by trying to find your inner self. Physical and mental health are joint into one, therefore be successful by caring both before coming back to “normal”. Community News SHAPE Starts Vaccinating! By Alain Pintelon T hursday 22nd April marks the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccination to SHAPE community members. The SHAPE Vaccination Centre is located in the B3 Events Centre opposite the SHAPE Healthcare Facility. The building has been converted into avaccination cell where every SHAPE community member, upon NSTEP registration and reception of a booking appointment, will receive the COVID-19 immunization vaccine. The Head of Protocol & Conference Services (PCS) Branch, LTC GS Alain Pintelon, the SHAPE Healthcare Facility Commander, COL Kathleen G. Spangler, the responsible of the SHAPE Vaccination Center, “ Maj Noe Muniz and the responsible of the SHAPE COVID-19 Vaccination Co-Ordination Cell, LT CDR Christian Emery, expressed unanimously their gratitude to Belgium, the Host Nation, for the provision of vaccines to the SHAPE Community. Today is a great day. After 2 months of intensive planning and preparation, we are finally there. SHAPE received from the Host Nation 1000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine for the most vulnerable persons of our Community. And I really hope the remaining quantity of vaccines will follow soon, so we can offer everybody the possibility to be vaccinated here at SHAPE. I do believe the vaccination campaign is the way out of this pandemic, so I call out to everybody to register for the vaccination if not done yet. My thanks goes out to all the medical professionals of SHF and all personnel in reinforcement, I only see highly motivated personnel doing their best to make this vaccination campaign successful. 23 APRIL NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY & CHILDREN’S DAY By LTC (OF-4) Ufuk SAHIN (TUR ARMY) The History… April 23, 1920 is when the First Grand National Assembly was opened and the sovereignty of the Turkish people was declared. It was the first step toward the creation of the Republic of Turkey, the roots of which were laid during the Turkish National War of Liberation led by Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK. On April 23, 1929, upon Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s proposal, the founder of the Turkish Republic, the Turkish Grand National Assembly declared April 23 as a national holiday dedicated to children. Thus Turkey became the first country in the world celebrating an official Children’s Day. The opening day of the First Grand National Assembly on April 23, 1920 Since then April 23 started to be celebrated as National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. Today this national holiday is celebrated in Turkey with children from all over the world in a spirit of peace and harmony. In 1979, UNICEF declared the 23rd of April as the “World Children’s Day” (WCD). It was only after 1979 that the holiday assumed an international dimension. Declaration of the year 1979 as the International Year of the Child by UNESCO Great Atatürk with children made April 23 the day of all children around the world. The first celebration was attended by six countries. But attendance increased over time, “Little ladies, little gentlemen! You are all a cherished and by 2019 the number of participant countries in rose, the star of the future and beacons of prosperity. the celebration of April 23rd National Sovereignty You will be the instruments of suffusing the nation and Children’s Day was more than forty. with rays of enlightenment and progress. The 23rd of April has great importance as Turkey Work hard, knowing how important and valued you is the first and only country in the world that all are. This is predominantly Mustafa Kemal Atatürk due to the fact that the Great Leader Atatürk thought children are the future of the world. His hand in hand, regardless of their nationality, dedication of April 23 to children symbolizes his language and religion. This important day is also unshakable trust and love for them. an opportunity for strengthening the bonds of He believed in the dream of “Peace in the World” and love, fraternity and friendship among the children knew that today’s children can fulfil this dream of the world. 4 SCL
In any year under “normal” circumstances, the children in Turkey celebrate National Sovereignty and Children’s Day as a national holiday as they always have. Children’s Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Schools participate in week-long ceremonies marked by performances in all fields in large stadiums watched by the entire nation. Representative children are holding a session in the historical 1st National Among the activities on this day, the children send Assembly Building. their representatives to replace state officials and high ranking civil servants in their offices. The President, the cabinet ministers, provincial governors, and mayors all hand over their positions to representative children. These children, in turn, sign executive orders relating to educational and environmental policies. On this day, the children also replace the parliamentarians in the Grand National Assembly and hold a special session to discuss matters concerning child issues. SHAPE Events… SHAPE Community has been celebrating World Children’s Day traditionally with enthusiasm in a multinational atmosphere with great participation since 1999. Activities have been organised by SHAPE International School (SIS) and Turkish NMR with the support of other NMRs, SHAPE Command Group and Base Support Group. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the World Children’s Day celebrations at SHAPE had to be take place on a limited basis. Nevertheless, in consultation with relevant bodies, alternate activities were held in line with COVID-19 restrictions. One of which is the traditional drawing contest, which was conducted with the theme of “If my dreams could come true”. Almost 400 students participated in the drawing contest, which was categorised in two age groups. The winners among two categories were awarded by both SHAPE International School and NMR TUR. The award ceremony was held on 27th April with limited attendance due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Ms. Laurence ERNOTTE, the Director of General Services, and Col. Tuncay ÖZKUMRU, on behalf of TUR NMR, delivered speeches on the meaning and the importance of the day and the winners of the contest received their awards, with Certificate of Appreciation.

The messages poured out from the innocent minds of our beloved children reminded us the importance of our responsibility for preparing a better future them. www.shape2day.com/news/world-childrens-day-2021 Message of NMR TUR Major General Rasim YALDIZ to SHAPE Community and children: Dear respectful members of the SHAPE Community, 23th April is the founding day of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, which is one of the most important milestones in Turkish history. On this day sovereignty is left to Turkish nation and Nation’s independence declared to whole world. And also it is the first and only day that is dedicated to children in the world which was gifted to all children by Great Leader Atatürk who have seen children as the guarantee of future of a nation. This year we have celebrated the 101th anniversary of April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. April 23 always reminds us our commitments and responsibilities towards children to provide them with a safe future with appropriate living conditions in terms of healthcare, education, environment and security. Dear beloved children, As you all know, there are children from many countries in SHAPE. Therefore, it is your task to acknowledge and act upon both the similarities and the differences. The more you know the differences and respect them, the more you create a peaceful world in the future. We all appreciate and love you. You are the meaning of our lives, the most fascinating flowers of our garden. You are the future. We all trust and believe in you. May you always be happy and realize your dreams. “We believe that this wonderful SHAPE tradition will continue in the upcoming years to continue contributing to a better future of enhanced friendship and peace among nations.”
Visual Art @ SHAPE May 2021 By Harold Yoepp, Civilian U.S. H ere is a place to be. Seen. Stop and stare. To wit: stand there and be in awe of something you've never seen before. Being introduced to color wheel eyes and clocks ticking time and walking under umbrellas in the rain. No two are the same. Multiple events on a thematic pictorial plane. Acts of projective imagination in which we consciously participate. Beneficent incarnations of the inspired and prophetic mind; the aesthetic, the spiritual, the sublime. With dream arms and dream fingers spread, reaching for the moon. One, two, three dimensions and infinity. Energy in all its complexity. Shapes and sizes playing themselves, but in colorful disguises they're full of surprises. Lyons and tigers and bears, oh my! Birds that stalk and birds that squawk, and dogs, and cats, and mice thrice caught. Expansive references and allusions that range from heroic proportions of Napoleon crossing the cardboard Alps, to the architectural mystery of Palmanova, Italy, revealed in a square. It's perfect, I know. I've been there. A child's fate, perchance to dream, but also protector, calming her steed. Cue the calliope and we're off to the races! Stunning self-portraits and what their psychological underpinnings reveal; enchanting, radiant, surreal. Look again, it's all there. Elements that sizzle and elements that sigh. Elements in all their component and constituent parts, that have been around forever and never die. Variants of charcoal, tempera, oils, pastels, watercolors, collage, embroidery, graphite, photography, print, and digital. From kindergarten to fifth grade, freshman to senior high, gathered together with the decorated letters that read, "Visual Art @ SHAPE". We're here in the big space of the mind's eye at the PX on Chievres through 24 Ma y, with the ethereal sky aloft and here, on the ground, at least two carnival rides standing by. You can't miss it. 8 SCL

The ceremony started with an opening speech by Mr José Pittellioen, Director General, about the origin of this new programme which was the result of an educational seminar in Norway in May 2019. During this trip, the SIS principals visited several Nature & Forest schools and received key information of their various benefits during a presentation at the Ministry of Education in Oslo. After this introductory speech, the Principal of the Norwegian school, Mrs Karin Steinum Graham then took the floor to give more information about the multiple points of interests of proposing students a forest school programme, such as the holistic development, self-confidence strengthening and better mutual understanding and benevolence between the children. After the unveiling of the cabin board name by Mrs Steinum Graham, the NOR NMR, BGEN Anne Rydning, the CDR BSG, Col Ryan Raymond, and Mr José Pittellioen proceeded to the ribbon cutting. plants have been first mentioned in the Greek literature. Allegedly coming from the Greek word “dios”, which means “divine” and refers to the god Zeus, and “anthos,” which means “flower”, carnations have come to play an essential role or to acquire a specific symbolism in various cultures worldwide. Indeed, being used in art and decor in the Ancient Greece and Rome, carnations usage and symbolism evolved "in time and space”, having acquired a specific significance for many people/ nations. In the Netherlands, the white carnations represent the country’s veterans who fought and died in World War II. In France, purple carnations are the traditional funeral flower. In South Korea, besides using the carnation as a means of fortune telling, people also use it in Parents’ Day (each colour of the carnation flower having its own connotation) and Teachers’ Day (students’ favourite teachers are presented with single red carnations). In China, carnations are the most popular flowers to use for weddings (namely in bridal bouquets). In the U.S.A. the flowers are now the official bloom used for Mother’s Day. In some countries in the Northern Hemisphere (such as Italy, Croatia and Austria), the red carnation is used to represent the labour movement and socialism in May Day. Green carnations in turn are typically worn for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Carnation Although Portugal partakes of some of these symbolic meanings attributed to carnations (such as Flower the one related to May Day), these flowers have an even more specific and significant meaning: they are the symbol of the 25th of April 1974 Revolution, Symbolism & also known as the Carnation Revolution. The 25th of April (Freedom Day) is a national Portugal’s holiday in Portugal that commemorates a military coup driven by popular anxieties that overthrew Freedom Day the longest authoritarian regime in Western Europe during the 20th century: the “Ditadura Nacional” (1926-1933) and the “Estado Novo” By Ana Luísa Oliveira (PRT-Civ) dictatorships (1933-1974). The revolution began as a coup organized by C arnations or clove pinks are the most common designations for the Dianthus caryophyllus species, whose origin is believed to be the the Armed Forces Movement (“Movimento das Forças Armadas”, MFA), composed of military officers who opposed the regime, but it was Mediterranean region. The Portuguese military coup of 1974 became known for having been a nonviolent rebellion (almost no shots were fired), providing the country a peaceful transition of power. The emergence of the carnation as a symbol of the Freedom Day is as unpredicted as the population’s immediate and enthusiastic response towards the military coup. Celeste Caeiro (born 2nd May 1933) is herself a symbol of this enthusiastic civil response. On the 25th April 1974 she was working in a self- service restaurant in Lisbon called "Sir". The restaurant had opened exactly a year before and for its first anniversary the owners planned to give out flowers to all its customers, but this had to be cancelled because of the coup. She was sent home and told to use the wasted red and white flowers as she wanted. Celeste collected the carnations and on her way back home she came across the soldiers who were at “Rossio” (downtown Lisbon) waiting for orders from the General command. She approached a soldier and asked him what was going on. He answered: “We are going to arrest Marcello Caetano. This is a revolution!” The soldier then asked her for a cigarette. She replied she did not smoke and apologised for not being able to give them something to eat (the soldiers had been there waiting for hours and all stores were already closed anticipating something abnormal). All she had were carnations. So, she offered the soldier a carnation, which he gently accepted, placing it in the barrel of his shotgun. His gesture thrived. Soon various flower sellers were donating more carnations to decorate the revolutionary soldiers and their weapons. According to Celeste Caeiro, the carnations prevented bloodshed that day on Portuguese soil… “The carnations were stuck in the barrels, so the soldiers could not shoot”. 80 Years From the Battle of Greek Forts By Nikolaos Kastellianos OF-3 GRC his year we celebrate the 80th anniversary T from the epos of the Battle in the Metaxas Line, commonly known as the Battle of Forts, which was occurred from 6th to 9th of April 1941. The aforementioned Battle was the second phase of the amazing and extraordinary resistance by Greek army along with reserve forces against Axis Powers, enforcing them to fight for almost nine months in order to capture Greek capital. According to historians, all this unpredictable waste of time was catalytic in the evolution of the whole World War II. As we have seen in the last article of this magazine1, the first phase of the Greek resistance started on 28th of October when the Leader of Greece Ioannis Metaxas answered «No» (Όχι in Greece) to the blackmail of Mussolini and he preferred the war instead of dishonorable surrender. Surprising entire world, the Battle against Fascist forces lasted since end of March, where Greeks managed not only to avoid the capture of their land but also to push their adversaries back into Albanian territory. However, the capture of Thessaloniki and the unobstructed moving of Nazi forces to Athens, forced Greek Government on 10th of April, to order all Forts Defenders to surrender in order to avoid more casualties without meaning and to finalize the second phase of Greek heroic resistance6.
