Sept/Oct - Elul/Tishrei 5779 High Holy Days 5779 Shana tova u’metuka! Break the Fast @ Temple RSVP by Sept 15th Celebrate Sukkot & Simchat Torah Our Holiday to Rejoice
From the Rabbi There is an expression in Hebrew, "Ein Navi B'Eero"- meaning, no one is a prophet in his/her own city. Many years ago, when Rabbi Harold Kushner became famous for his book, "When Bad Things Happen to Good People", he was asked if his congregation realized how fortu- nate they were to have such a person as their spiritual leader. He responded, "I still receive complaints from congregants that I either speak too long, too short, or overshadow the Bar Mitzvah, and, by the way Rabbi, when are we bringing in the next out-of-town scholar?" The famous Torah portion’s account of the Golden Calf: “And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from Mt. Sinai, the people gathered themselves unto Aaron and said to him: 'Up, make us a god who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has become of him' " (Ex. 32:1). Some Biblical commentators suggest Moses was only six hours late, and already the Israelites were clamoring to replace him. Rabbi Shmuel Moholiver, an early Zionist of the late 19th century, asked, "When the Israelites lost faith in Moses' return from Sinai, why did they not appoint Aaron in his place? Instead, they construct a Golden Calf. This teaches us that people seek someone from the outside, even if he is but a senseless calf, rather than choose one from among themselves, even if he is as great and experienced as Aaron, their acclaimed High Priest." How many organizations, corporations, or companies, have failed because they overlooked local talent to choose someone from the "outside". Granted, some have succeeded, but the "grass is always greener on the other side" axiom is too often the rule rather than exception. Because one comes from New York City does not make him/her brighter, more capable, or even worldlier than one from Spokane, Washington. The tendency to dismiss even ourselves as lesser beings because of who or where we live is to deny that everyone is equally endowed with the same infusion of Godliness. Our "local" talents are too often overlooked, underestimated, and unused; this is a real shame! Storyteller and Tzedakah Maven, Danny Siegel, teaches that one should always assume the person sitting next to him/her is the Messiah, waiting for some simple act of human kindness to reveal oneself. A whole lot of the answers for living and loving are, in fact, right next to us. Remember this the next time you sit next to someone in a group, a committee meeting, or a large gathering. The answer to a problem could be sitting right next to us, or could be you! Rabbi Moshe Saks President’s Message Friends: I am honored and to be honest, slightly overwhelmed to be serving as President of Temple Israel. I am learning that it is a daunting task to meet the expectations and the needs of so many on such varied levels. Many of you may not know that as a profession, I am a Speech and Language Pathologist. This career has led me to work with children from birth to 3 years old, preschoolers, school age students with regular and special needs and adults, all with many different presentations of communication disorders. I am currently on the faculty of Marywood University as a Field Supervisor. Among the many issues I hope to address during my tenure here is that of communication and its importance to our congregation. Rather than being unhappy or disgruntled about an issue that we at Shul may not even know about, call me, call the Rabbi, call the Cantor, call the office, call a committee chairperson and express your concern. If you know of someone in need; be it a Pastoral visit, a phone call, a ride, a minyan, a meal, please contact someone here at Temple. Even better, if you are pleased about something, do the same, contact us. Do you have a suggestion or an idea? Please, share it with us. It is the best way for us to serve you as our congregants. Listening, speaking, and sharing conversation will all lead to better communication. As I have long learned; “I don’t know the road to success, but the road to failure is to try to please EVERYONE”. That being said, I will give my best effort to do my best for Temple Israel. I am looking forward to working and communicating with you! Annie Monsky 570-587-2665 annlmonsky@gmail.com 2

Cantor’s Message Elul, the last month of the Jewish calendar, will begin on Rosh Hodesh, August 11&12. Sunday August 12th is the first day we will begin blowing the shofar every morning and also reciting penitential prayers. According to Jewish tradition, the arrival of Elul marks the beginning of each Jew’s preparation for the upcoming High Holidays. This year Rosh Hashanah begins the evening of Sunday, September 9. Our annual “Slichot “ Service will be held Saturday night September 1st. This year Slichot is on the 22nd day of Elul. The word Elul means search. This makes sense because Elul is the time of the year when we are supposed to do a lot of soul searching. The Slichot Service is a beautiful musical experience marked by the participation of the Temple Israel choir accompanied by the piano, violin & flute. As the conductor of the choir, I am very proud of all our very talented participants. I am looking forward to our rehearsals. I am very excited about the many events that are planned for our congregation for the new year 5779. My family and I wish everyone a happy & healthy New Year. Shana Tovah U Metukah 5
