UN Women for Peace Association 2018 EVENT SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES March 8, 2018 Annual Awards Luncheon at the United Nations HONORING The First Lady of Panama Lorena Castillo Leyla Ilham Aliyeva Sheikha Rima Al-Sabah Eve Branson Ashley Graham United Nations Headquarters New York City
Dear Friends, V iolence against women is a global issue. We believe it is intolerable. In some countries, one out of seven women are raped, abused or mutilated. Around the globe, nearly one in five women under the age of fifteen are sexually abused. Over 130 million women have experienced genital mutilation. It is estimated that as many as 2.5 million people are trafficked annually into situations including prostitution, forced labor, slavery or servitude; women and girls account for about 80 percent of the detected victims. This is not just a woman’s issue, it is a man’s issue as well. Women make up half of the world’s population, and empowering them will improve society as a whole. Only with the help of the private sector can we successfully combat these crimes. The UN Women for Peace Association (UNWFPA) is committed to the prevention of violence against women and girls, to the provision of services to those affected by violence, to strengthening the implementation of laws and policies against violence, and to the empowerment of women in countries and societies where they are under-advantaged. We work tirelessly to support organizations whose programs empower and educate women everywhere. Our aim as a major donor to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women, is to motivate governments through the exemplary actions of the private sector, to be a visible advocate for the cause. We hope you will consider the opportunity to serve as a major supporter and be part of this global action for women. Sincerely, Muna Rihani Al-Nasser Barbara Winston Chair President

WHY YOUR SUPPORT IS URGENTLY NEEDED As you read these words, nearly 5 million women and girls are living in slavery, victims of human trafficking. These are more than just numbers, they are our mothers, our sisters, and our daughters. 60 million more are child brides, and 140 million live with the pain of forced genital mutilation. An estimated 31 million girls of primary school age and 34 million girls of lower secondary school age were not enrolled in school in 2011. Women account for two thirds of the world’s 774 million adult illiterates. We invite you and your organization to join us in raising vital funds to support the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women programs that will bring change to women and girls across the globe. In addition to support of the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women, UN Women for Peace Association is proud to announce our 2017 support of a UNWFPA school in Lebanon dedicated to educating refugee girls. www.unwomenforpeace.org #IWALK4WOMEN
UN WOMEN FOR PEACE ASSOCIATION PROUDLY SUPPORTS THE UN TRUST FUND TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN THE UNITED NATIONS TRUST FUND TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN (UN TRUST FUND) WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN 1996. IT IS THE ONLY GLOBAL, MULTILATERAL, GRANT-MAKING MECHANISM THAT IS DEDICATED EXCLUSIVELY TO ADDRESSING ALL FORMS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS. THE UN TRUST FUND IS ADMINISTERED BY UN WOMEN ON BEHALH OF THE UN SYSTEM. THE OVERRIDING AIM OF ALL UN TRUST FUND ACTIVIITIES IS TO SUPPORT INITIATIVES THAT HAVE A REAL, CONCRETE AND LASTING IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF WOMEN AND GIRLS. THE UN TRUST FUND FOCUSES ON THREE PRIORITY AREAS: • Preventing violence against women and girls through empowering groups especially at risk of violence, and engaging in strategic prevention efforts; • Expanding survivor access to services and building the capacity of service providers to respond effectively to the needs of women and girls affected by violence; and • Strengthening implementation of laws, policies, action plans and institutions to become more effective, transparent and accountable in addressing violence against women and girls. IN 2017 THE REACH AND IMPACT OF THE WORK BY UN TRUST FUND GRANTEES WAS GLOBAL AND GROUNDBREAKING: 106 77 $5.4M 6M 250,000 INITIATIVES COUNTRIES & TOTAL GRANT WOMEN, GIRLS WOMEN & GIRLS TERRITORIES VALUE MEN & BOYS DIRECTLY BENEFITED BENEFITED
THE MOMENT IS RIGHT PROJECTS FUNDED BY THE UN TRUST FUND ARE MAKING LARGE STRIDES TO PREVENT AND END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS, BUT RESOURCES FOR THESE INITIATIVES ARE SEVERELY LACKING. A RECENT STUDY BY THE FOUNDATION CENTER, A US-BASED ORGANIZATION, FOUND THAT ONLY 2 PERCENT OF ALL HUMAN RIGHTS-RELATED GIVING BY PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS IS ALLOCATED TO ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS. ACCORDING TO RESEARCH BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN DEVELOPMENT (AWID), THE MEDIAN INCOME FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS GLOBALLY IS LESS THAN US $20,000. THE UN TRUST FUND’S GRANT GIVING RANGES FROM SCHOOL BASED PROGRAMS TO COMMUNITY-BASED INTERVENTIONS, TO INITIATIVES PROVIDING SUPPORT TO SURVIVORS OF VIOLENCE AND THOSE AT RISK. HOWEVER, THE TRUST FUND IS ABLE TO FUND JUST A FRACTION OF THE REQUESTS IT RECEIVES EACH YEAR, WHILE DEMAND IS GROWING STEADILY. LAST YEAR FOR EXPAMPLE, IT RECEIVED 1,792 APPLICATIONS FOR A TOTAL OF MORE THAN US $677 MILLION. THIS YEAR IS A CRITICAL JUNCTURE FOR THE FUTURE OF EFFORTS TO PREVENT AND END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS. THE SETTING OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO REPOSITION THE ISSUE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS AND ENSURE IT IS PLACED UNEQUIVOCALLY AT THE CENTRE OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AGENDA. THE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE COMING MONTHS COULD PROVE PIVOTAL IN REVERSING THE TRENDS OF CHRONIC UNDERINVESTMENT IN INITIATIVES TO PREVENT AND END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS. FOR THESE COMMITMENTS TO BE TRANSFRORMED INTO REAL CHANGE IN THE LIVES OF WOMEN AND GIRLS THEY MUST BE MATCHED WITH AN AMBITIOUS AND ROBUST FINANCING PACKAGE. THE UN TRUST FUND IS MORE DETERMINED THAN EVER TO TURN PUBLIC COMMITMENTS INTO REAL IMPROVEMENTS IN THE LIVES OF WOMEN AND GIRLS.
UNWFPA PROJECT FOR 2017 THE UN WOMEN FOR PEACE ASSOCIATION SCHOOL FOR SYRIAN REFUGEE GIRLS BEGINNING IN 2017, THE UNWFPA WILL FURTHER ADVANCE ITS GOALS OF INCREASING ACCESS TO EDUCATION AND EMPOWERING WOMEN BY FOCUSING EFFORTS ON SYRIAN REFUGEE GIRLS IN LEBANON’S BEKAA VALLEY. LEBANON IS A SMALL COUNTRY THAT HAS BEEN OVERWHELMED BY MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION SYRIAN REFUGEES. THE BEKAA VALLEY IS WHERE SOME OF THE POOREST OF THEM HAVE SETTLED AS IT IS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF THEIR WAR-TORN HOMELAND. THE UNWFPA PLANS TO MAKE A PROFOUND AND LONG-LASTING INTERVENTION IN THIS AREA BY FUNDING AN EDUCATIONAL AND VOCATIONAL SCHOOL FOR 160 SYRIAN REFUGEE GIRLS FROM THE AGES OF 14-18. THESE GIRLS AND THEIR FAMILIES FACE TREMENDOUS CHALLENGES ON A DAILY BASIS, SUCH AS THE NEED FOR EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE, SAFE WATER, ADEQUATE SANITATION, PROPER HYGIENE, AND SUBSTANTIAL SHELTERS (MOST LIVE IN NEARBY INFORMAL TENTED SETTLEMENTS). THE UNWFPA SCHOOL FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES GIRLS WILL BE NONRELIGIOUS AND APOLITICAL, WELCOMING ALL FAITHS. IT TEACHES THE OFFICIAL LEBANESE CURRICULUM OF SCIENCES, MATHEMATICS, ARABIC AND ENGLISH. EXPERTS FROM THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF BEIRUT (AUB) AND UNESCO CARRY OUT REGULAR TEACHER TRAINING SESSIONS AND ENSURE PROPER APPLICATION OF THE CURRICULUM. THE STUDENTS ALSO LEARN VOCATIONAL AND SKILLS TRAINING IN NURSING AIDE, COMPUTER LITERACY, SEWING AND EMBROIDERY, HAIRDRESSING AND COSMETICS. UPON GRADUATION STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE OF ACCREDITATION FROM THE LEBANESE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND HIGHER EDUCATION. AT THE UNWFPA SCHOOL THE GIRLS WILL RECEIVE SO MUCH MORE THAN LITERACY, NUMERACY AND VOCATIONAL SKILL SETS. THEY WILL RECEIVE IMPORTANT CHILD AND WOMEN PROTECTION PROGRAMS THAT STRENGTHEN THEIR RESILIENCE AGAINST VARIOUS KINDS OF EXPLOITATION AND INCREASE THEIR OPPORTUNITIES TO FIND JOBS AND LEAD FULFILLING LIVES. THE ONSITE SCHOOL THERAPIST IS AVAILABLE TO ALL STUDENTS AND WILL SPEND EXTRA TIME WITH ANY THAT REQUIRE SPECIAL ATTENTION. IF THESE GIRLS ARE NOT EDUCATED THEY ARE SUBJECT TO SEX TRAFFICKING, BECOMING CHILD BRIDES, AND BEING RECRUITED BY ISIS. THE UN WOMEN FOR PEACE ASSOCIATION SCHOOL FOR SYRIAN REFUGEE GIRLS WILL POSITIVELY AFFECT THE LIVES OF HUNDREDS OF GIRLS WHO PASS THROUGH ITS DOORS AND LAUGH AND LEARN IN ITS CLASSROOMS. AND MOREOVER, THROUGH THE STRENGTH AND INTELLIGENCE AND BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT OF ITS MANY STUDENTS, THE SCHOOL WILL POSITIVELY AFFECT THE LIVES OF ALL THOSE WHO THEY GO ON TO TEACH AND LOVE AND LIVE AMONG.
