Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. Lighting of The Advent Candles Jake, Abby, and Taylor Myers The world says, “All is lost.” God says, “All is loved.” The darkness says, “The light is dying.” The light says, “The fire is catching.” Fear says, “Cover your eyes and your ears.” Hope says, “Wait, watch, and listen.” As we light our first Advent candle, we pray for holy hope of God. Come now, O Child of Mary. Come now, O Prince of Hope. Hymn 82 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus HYFRYDOL Lucy Baum, Tricia Berrett, Xieyi (Abby) Zhang, Trace Haythorn, vocals; Vicki Fey, keyboard Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us; let us find our rest in thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a king, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all-sufficient merit raise us to thy glorious throne. Call to Confession Christian Antwi Prayer of Confession God of Hope, in times such as this we find ourselves living in despair and the fear of what comes next. We forget to hope in the promise of your glory. God of Peace, we seek the peace that passes understanding in a reality of chaos and despair. God help us to be bearers of your peace and be the light that shines in the darkness. God of Joy, we recognize that we do not always see the joy in the world, and retreat into sorrow. We ask as we enter this new season of Advent recharge us so that we may see and give joy to the world. God of Love, our world is saturated with hatefulness and disdain for one another. We find ourselves consuming that bitter fruit and spewing out hateful words and actions. May we eat of the fruits that give us new life. Amen.
