Wenn du deine Arbeit schickst, schreibst du bitte einen kurzen Satz (auf Deutsch oder Englisch) darüber, wie du diese und frühere Arbeiten gefunden hast. Du kannst auch sagen, was du als nächstes üben oder lernen möchtest. Ich freue mich darauf. In this lesson we are going to learn about The Great Barrier Reef. This is the world’s largest coral reef. Many tourists go diving in the reef and think it is the most beautiful in the world. It is full of colourful corals and a lot of amazing wildlife, such as fish and turtles. However, climate change, pollution and global warming are damaging the corals in a process called ‘bleaching’. This is very bad for the reef. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is an organisation that tries to make the Australian government decide to ban bad practises in the reef area. In this lesson you will find out more information about The Great Barrier Reef, why it is being damaged and what we should do to protect it. EXERCISE 1: vocabulary practise a) Read the text above. EXERCISE 5: Modal verbs for advice (modale Hilfsverben – erinnert euch – 1. Lektion - dazu müsstet ihr eine tolle Übersicht im Hefter haben oder ihr wiederholt hier. ) When people or governments have a problem, like the problems in the Great Barrier Reef, they need Revision - Wiederholung (Theorie) to ask for advice (Beratung / Vorschlag) so that they can decide what to do. In English, we use special words called ‘modal verbs’ to give advice: should *could can ought to (sollte) (könnte/konnte) (können) (sollte/müsste) However, if we think the problem is very bad, then we can also use stronger ‘modal verbs’ that show an obligation (Verpflichtung) to do something: must *have to (müssen nur in der Gegenwart) (müssen in den anderen Zeitformen und Gegenwart) Verneinung: should not – shouldn’t ought not to – oughtn’t to must not – mustn’t (! – Bedeutung ändert sich) cannot – can’t nicht müssen = do not have to - Bsp.: I don’t have to bake ... = Ich muss nicht backen. nicht dürfen = mustn’t – Bsp.: You mustn’t talk in the lesson. = Im Unterricht darfst du nicht reden. Remember! If we want to make these words negative (Verneinungen) (advise someone not to do something) then we just add the word ‘not’. *Exceptions Ausnahme): You CANNOT say haven’t to or couldn’t for giving advice. ‘have to’ and ‘could’ can only be used in positive sentences for giving advice. Word order (positive and negative sentences) – Reihenfolge der Wörter im Satz: Subject modal verb (+not) infinitive verb object rest of sentence. (without to) You should ban fishing boats in some areas of the Great Barrier Reef. We must not (mustn’t) ignore the science about climate change. Word order (questions): *Questions word modal subject infinitive object rest of question? (What/where/ verb verb when/Who/How) (without to) How can the protect the Great from damage? government Barrier Reef --------------------- Should we believe the science about climate change? (*you do not always need to use a question word. Questions that do not start with a question word can usually be answered with ‘yes’ or ‘no’.)
