Service Announcement
13 August 2021
New Zealand
GRI Overview
There continues to be high demand for space and equipment for both import
and export cargo. We continue to urge customers to provide forecasted
volumes 6-8 weeks in advance.
Pressure remains on south-bound bookings from many parts of the Northern
Hemisphere. Carriers continue to announce General Rate Increases (GRI’s) on
a fortnightly basis from some ports, as provided in the previous Market Update.
Please work with your local Mainfreight team to source alternative services
and/or updated costings.
Schedule and congestion issues are continuing to affect south-bound
Asia/China bookings. Further details are set out below.
Ad hoc space is being provided to Mainfreight from a number of shipping lines
who are receiving late cancellations for exports from New Zealand – this will
mean extra capacity is available, if cut-off’s can be met. We will continue to
offer this space to our existing customers as it becomes available.
Export
No change in Export Market from previous market releases.
Imports
NOR options are available for import cargo from China and Southeast Asia.
These options are providing rate relief on market costs but subject to containeravailability.

Import container de-hire depot’s continue to be over capacity. Carriers are
imposing surcharges for AKL de-hire’s and are prioritising all non AKL cargo
for import bookings. Mainfreight can assist with FCL trucking from alternative
NZ Ports if required.
LCL
Our LCL consolidation services are continuing to provide solutions for our
customers for regular replenishment of their inventory levels. With Mainfreight
operating Consolidation services to and from Asia, Europe, USA and Australia
we are well-positioned to assist our customers’ requirements
Air
Airfreight shipments continue to move ex Asia without significant delay.
Mainfreight continues to have allocation of space on regular flights from North
China and SE Asia. Please contact our team to discuss these options.
On-going Seafreight congestion continues to effect airfreight demand with
more freight moving via airfreight in last 2 – 3 weeks than same period last
year.
Covid – 19 has forced Shanghai workers at all terminals or airlines with duties
related to international air cargo services are required to process the nucleic
acid testing every 2 days. In Beijing, all airport staff are required to be
quarantined for 14 days if contact with Covid-19 is confirmed. This is causing
operational slow down but our team are managing situation closely.
Customs
BMSB Season will begin from September 1st departures, continuing through to
30 April 2022.
MPI have released their updated health standard which can be found here.
This outlines all requirements during BMSB season for importing cargo from
high risk origin countries. Please contact your local team to discuss how this
will affect your shipments. The below table outlines effected origins.Subscribe Past Issues Translate
Foreign Market Summary
Asia
Ningbo Port has announced Covid-19 cases in its operation. Vessels have
begun omitting Ningbo to avoid congestion and schedule issues seen during
the Yantian outbreak. Mainfreight continues to monitor the Ningbo situation
and are working closely with our team in China for updates. Additional market
releases will be made if the situation continues to deteriorate.
Tranship services in Singapore and Port Klang continue to have prolonged
delays ranging from 10 to 30 days.
Mainfreight has increased its allocation with carriers to allow for increased LCL
cargo. This will provide customers with flexibility and give relief in the situation
where customers cannot get FCL bookings to match cargo-ready dates.
We have increased our weekly allocations with our airline partners to bolster
our ability to move customers’ cargo in situations where airfreight is required.
Summary of current congestion is below, based on major port hubs.Subscribe Past Issues Translate
Australia
Australian exports continue to be congested with overbooking forcing rolled
bookings. Carriers also continue to implement GRI’s to combat reduced space
availability. Please provide your local Mainfreight office with forward forecasts
where possible.
Europe
Export routings to Europe continue to be limited. We can provide options but
continue to request forward forecasts.
Carriers have advised that due to transhipment congestion and backlogs in SE
Asia, import bookings from Europe to NZ will be limited for the next 6-8 weeks.
Space on alternative routings via the Panama Canal is available on an ad-hoc
basis.
Alternative Ports of Origin can be considered as equipment stocks varies at
major ports – your Mainfreight Account Manager can help you with this option.
