This course aims at • providing students with a general understanding of the issues characterizing economic development – this will be done by means of a theoretical approach addressing the issue of inequalities, and in particular of income inequality, as well as the issues at the basis of economic development – both issues will be addressed by definitions and measurements so that theory could be compared with a more awkward reality • enabling students to collect data, process them and produce a coursework of their own which will be discussed at the end of the semester – All relevant material will be uploaded on the course website – Students are asked to check TEAMS and OLAT as well a.a.2020/21 DevEc - prof. Two modules • will address the complex relationship between growth (i.e. economic growth), development and inequality – Module Developmet è is meant to understand the role of the main economic variables in the virtuous dynamics within the sustainable development process in the medium-long run. • Why different countries follow different development paths? • Is there a development ladder? • Can we identify the most important development factors? – Module Inequality è will employ the main tools meant to describe inequality and to highlight the related concepts. • Is inequality a problem and why? • How do we describe inequality and how do we measure it? • Do different measures yield different results and how is this possible? a.a.2020/21 DevEc - prof. Development Module • seeks the links between the economic variables and their role towards yielding economic development • Four parts: – 1. Theories of growth and development – 2. Inequality Module • looks at inequality and development • four parts: – 1. The assessment of income inequality: methods and results – 2. Issues about world-wide health and education inequality and its implications on economic development – 3. How does gender inequality matter? – 4. Working together • The 4+4=8 points will not take the same time each. • Although each point will be dealth with alltogether and a test will be proposed at the end of each one, the modules will not necessarily run one after the other • The assignements (coursework) will be allotted as soon as possible. a.a.2020/21 DevEc - prof. At the end of the course you will be able to • a) understand the role of the main economic variables both in economic growth and in the virtuous dynamics within the sustainable development process in the medium-long run, • b) master the main concepts related to development and employ the usual tools meant to describe inequality. a.a.2020/21 DevEc - prof. General Evaluation • written examination è students will be asked to answer three open questions chosen from among five issues explained during the course in 90 minutes. • questions will be assessed in tenth • evaluation is meant to ascertain the knowledge of the issues, the understanding of the methods and their critical evaluation. • an oral examination may follow, to clarify obscure explanations, if any. a.a.2020/21 DevEc - prof. Coursework Evaluation • Neither coursework, nor attending classes is compulsory (although it is advisable). • Coursework assigned will be developed during the weeks when classes are held and discussed at the end of the semester • written examination è students will be asked to answer only two open questions chosen from among five issues explained during the course in 90 minutes a.a.2020/21 DevEc - prof.
