The Book of Life It is easy for me to remember Susan’s birthday because it is three days before mine. Every year our children work hard to find unique presents for each of us. What do you give parents who want nothing and given this year, have become adept at ordering whatever they need on-line? Last February, our birthday month, they gave us the perfect gift. In honor of Rosh Hashanah, the birthday of the world, I will share this birthday present with you. We were presented with two StoryWorth subscriptions. This company, and I am sure that there are others like it, sends a question each week that when answered will be compiled into a book along with photographs. A few examples: 1. What is one of your favorite trips that you’ve taken? What made it special? 2. What was the neighborhood you grew up in like? 3. What is your best advice when it comes to raising children? 4. How did you decide to get married? 5. What were your dad, your mom, your grandparents like when you were a child? How many of us would love to have a book filled with the answers to these and many more questions from our parents and grandparents? I want to ask my grandfather what it was like when he arrived in America? I want to ask my father how difficult it was for him when his father died and he was a teenager? Mom, you went to Smith College on a scholarship after your father lost all of his money in the depression. You served food in the dining room to more affluent students, did they treat you with respect? Many of you have had your DNA tested and have discovered where you came from and perhaps were surprised with a long-lost relative. How fascinating it would be to have information from family no longer alive? We may not be able to discover the stories that have been lost about our grandparents and great- grandparents, but we can provide for our children and grandchildren and generations not yet born stories that will add depth and meaning to their lives. A document that can be shared with relatives and friends. Perhaps our experiences will help guide them in their journey or give them comfort knowing the struggles we have overcome. We are each given one opportunity to write a Sefer Chaim, a Book of Life. The High Holidays are a time for reflection, remembering and learning from our choices. During these Holy Days let each of us consider creating a book to be treasured by those we love, or simply taking the time to share our history – both the blessings and the challenges. After a difficult year, may we continue to write our own Book of Life as we are inscribed in the Eternal Book of Life. Rabbi Harold S. After serving ten years as a board member, including three years as vice-president and one year as president-elect, Josh was a perfect fit for the position. We look forward to watching him lead this incredibly important organization. Congratulations to Emily Abrams, one of four teens who won the Cohn-Haddow’s Annual High School Jewish Writing Competition. Emily’s story, “Faith and Pride – Lost and Found,” describes how the darkest moments of her life – the antisemitism exhibited by her peers – led her to the B’nai B’rith Girls and eventually strengthened her connection with her Jewish identity and community. We are very proud to have her in our Temple family. www.temple-israel.org September/October 2021 • Elul/Tishrei/Cheshvan 5781/5782 9

FUNDS FUNDS IN ACTION IN ACTION We are thrilled to highlight 2 of our extraordinary funds in every issue of The Messenger. To see a complete list of all Temple funds, please visit www.temple-israel.org/funds DR. FREDRIC & LINDA GOLD NEWLYWED MEZUZAH FUND Marriage is a moment of unity which also represents a new beginning and a new home. Linda and Fred (z”l) Gold value the essence of happiness in a marriage, the care and love, the seeking for the best in one another, and also the beauty of Judaism in people’s lives. This is why they created the Dr. Fredric & Linda Gold Newlywed Mezuzah Fund that provides a new mezuzah and scroll to all newlywed couples blessed by our rabbis. Fred Gold passed away recently at the age of 72. He has been a member of Temple Israel since he was five years old when his family founded Temple together with Rabbi Leo Fram (z”l). His dedication to his wife, Linda, to his family, and to the Temple family can be found in his words to every new married couple receiving a mezuzah: “May your new home be full of love and happiness, and may you always embrace the Jewish Ideals of Tzedakah and Tikkun Olam (charity and world healing).” To donate to this fund, go to: www.temple-israel.org/tributes or call: 248-661-5700 JOSEPHINE & HARRY COLTON SHABBAT B’YACHAD AND COLLEGE FUND Harry Colton, part of the first graduation class of Rabbi Syme’s Religious School, was only 57 years old when he passed away. Thirty years later, his wife, Josephine, passed away. In 1999, their son, Richard Colton, and his wife Didi decided to perpetuate his parent’s memory through a family tribute fund. Rabbi Loss suggested “Shabbat B’yachad” - welcoming the family of a newborn home by sending them a Shabbat dinner. Children grow and become adults and so did the fund. Over time, another purpose was added: connecting with Temple members attending college. More than 170 students participate in Temple’s “College Connection Program” through which the Colton Fund sends packages for the holidays delivered by our clergy, provides gift cards to students, and organizes social gatherings. Currently, Brandon and Natalie Brooks, great grandchildren of Harry & Josephine, are attending college and thus creating a full family circle of giving and receiving. THE AUDREY & WILLIAM FARBER ENDOWMENT FUND FOR THE SUSAN & RABBI HAROLD LOSS EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER In-Review: Summer 2021 at Camp Shemesh - The Susan & Rabbi Harold Loss Early Childhood Center was delighted to bring Camp Shemesh back, after a hiatus in 2020 due to the global pandemic. A hugely successful 2020-2021 school year provided the road map to come back strong and safely, hosting 98 campers age two through Kindergarten. The ECC made full use of Temple Israel’s abundant gathering spaces; setting up two gyms, two outdoor water- play locations, two outdoor patios, in addition to our front playground and the Bridge between old and new classroom wings. Safety Town, a specialty camp for incoming Kindergarteners, set up the new Discovery Zone as a road course to teach vehicle and pedestrian safety. Each week the Campers had a new theme, with corresponding activities and projects. You may still spot a few colorful birds in the gardens from our birdwatching activity during “Let’s Go Camping” week. And plenty of pudding, both for mud pie-making during “A Day On the Farm,” and for pudding painting during “Messmakers” week. Camp Shemesh campers enjoyed sun (and rain), water slides, fireworks on screens, Carousel Acres petting zoo, beach balls, beaded Friendship bracelets, fireflies in a bottle, cake pan sailing ships, oobleck, and so many more fun and exciting things!
