Hard to Believe For my first 14 years at Temple, I was the Youth Rabbi. It was the best job in the country; traveling to retreats, interacting with teenagers, beginning the Temple Israel Teen Mission. In year 15, Rabbi Yedwab arrived, and I put a sign on my door, “Call Paul.” Through a series of transitions, I arrived at a point in my career where I announced that I was slowing down. Two years after my proclamation, I am busy as ever and trying to figure out what it means to balance family, Temple and travel. This month I am celebrating my 75th birthday. Am I finally old? How come I still feel young? Why is it that my physical reality does not live up to my youthful expectations? Am I the caricature that I always feared? Conversations with friends invariably include a description of physical ailments and pills that we are taking. A good night’s sleep is a vague memory, dating back to college years. I am not writing this article for my peers, although you will probably be the only ones to read this far. This is for all of the younger members of our community. Certain things are inevitable. Here are a few suggestions. Seventy-five can be the best time of your life if you maintain a sense of humor. If you are grumpy now, you will be unpleasant when old. If you have a positive attitude toward life, there is no reason for this to change. With the passage of years there will be transitions that are painful. Friends and family members will leave us and finding a way to peace of mind will be a constant challenge. We will begin to forget names, and really resent the person who comes up and asks, “Do you remember me? What is my name?” Of course, I always felt sorry for any insecure person who asked this question, putting me on the spot. Travel when you are young. There will come a point in your life when finding the next bathroom will become a part of the itinerary. Jump off a mountain while you are still up to the challenge. You can come to my office, I do not have to be there, and see the picture of a really cute couple hang gliding in New Zealand. In a few years, I will celebrate 50 years at Temple Israel. From Youth Rabbi to sage advisor, the journey has been both challenging and exciting. I have seen the best and the worst in people. I have celebrated and mourned with many. I have been part of an amazing and creative Jewish community. I am blessed with reasonable health and a loving family. It does not get better than this. TEMPLE’S JEWISH PERSONAL TRAINERS THE JEWISH PERSONAL TRAINER PROGRAM Temple’s Jewish Personal Trainers (JPTs) are an amazing team of congregants who have been learning with Cantor Smolash for the past year how to share our traditions in a positive impactful way. Our first initiative, sponsored by the Lois & Fred Howard Mezuzah Outreach Program Fund is to help Temple families affix a beautiful, hand-written mezuzah scroll from a certified scribe in their home. Our trainers are ready to visit your homes with everything required to affix your mezuzah. With their warm, dynamic approach, they will help this Jewish tradition come alive in your families’ eyes, and fill the doorways of your home with joy and light. If your child is registered in Temple’s ECC, you will receive a phone call and have the opportunity to schedule a visit from your trainer. Anyone else who is interested in this new program, please call Kim at Temple Israel 248-661-5700 to schedule a visit with a JPT who will help you put up your mezuzah. Thanks to Connie & Hal Schwartz and family and Cindy & Barry Howard and family for providing the gift of a kosher mezuzah to so many through the Lois & Fred Howard Mezuzah Outreach Program Fund. www.temple-israel.org March 2020 • Adar/Nisan 5780 7

FUNDSININ FUNDS ACTION ACTION DR. SOL LUFT AND BEATRICE LOCKER LUFT ARIZONA SHABBAT IN THE SUN MEMORIAL FUND Provides funding for the Arizona Shabbat in the Sun After the recent loss of both of their parents, the daughters of Dr. Sol and Beatrice Locker Luft wanted to honor their memories in a meaningful way. The path that brought the sisters to choose this particular purpose grew out of a larger story, lovingly crafted by the Lufts themselves. The Luft family had never been known to take the easy road. This was clear when they left their New York home decades ago to move to Michigan when Dr. Luft, a young podiatric physician, found bureaucratic constraints in the state were preventing him from achieving his professional goals. Completely starting over in an unfamiliar area with no friends and family, Beatrice and Sol worked hard to connect to their new community by making friends and joining a conservative synagogue. As their daughters grew older, however, Beatrice and Sol wanted their girls to have the same religious educational opportunities available to boys. Faced with yet another significant fork in the road, the Lufts made the difficult decision to search for a reform temple. Luckily for all parties, they found Temple Israel and thus began a long history of religious achievements for the girls and volunteer leadership for Beatrice and Sol. True to their trailblazing spirit, the Lufts decided to winter in Arizona instead of following friends to Florida and found themselves starting over again in an unfamiliar community. Eventually, Arizona felt like home, but they missed the Temple Israel clergy that had been by their side through life’s joys and difficulties. Much to their delight, Temple started making Shabbat in the Sun trips to Arizona, and those events became the highlight of the season. The visits felt like hugs from home, and the services were powerfully inspiring. They were comforted knowing their clergy valued this growing contingency of Temple members. Creating the Dr. Sol Luft and Beatrice Locker Luft Arizona Shabbat in the Sun Memorial Fund made perfect sense to the three daughters, and they know how very happy it would make their parents. Temple Israel and Arizona both hold special memories for their family – each representing times when their parents chose to embrace new challenges. Not only does the fund honor the courage the Lufts demonstrated by pioneering their own journey, but it also provides an important visit from home for their friends and others who will continue to enjoy these meaningful events. These are only a few of more than 160 special funds that help Temple Israel achieve its mission. The funds engage our members and connect with the community through creative outreach, compassionate assistance and meaningful celebration. The impact from these funds is remarkable, allowing children to learn, families to heal and people to grow. Many thanks to our fund grantors who recognized a need - and to our donors who continually support Temple’s efforts to reach those in need.
