Infection Current Awareness Update – 27/09/2021

Welcome to the weekly Infection Current Awareness Update (ICAU), produced by PHE
Knowledge and Library Services. The purpose of this update is to provide you with the latest,
best evidence about infection, to help you make informed decisions.
Please note: PHE KLS has set up a separate COVID-19 Daily Alert of latest research. If you
would like to receive this, please email libraries@phe.gov.uk. In addition to this, a page of
resources about the coronavirus is available here.

If you have any queries, please contact us at libraries@phe.gov.uk, and if you would like to
request a literature search, please use the Knowledge and Library Services Enquiries Portal
(PHE staff only).

Please note that not all the articles and resources referred to in this alert are freely available.
Some articles may require an Athens username and password, and for PHE and NHS staff,
these can be obtained here. If you do not work for PHE or the NHS, you may want to
approach your local health library service to discuss how you may have access to library
services.

[Correspondence] SARS-CoV-2's origin should be investigated
worldwide for pandemic prevention
17 Sep 2021
The origin of SARS-CoV-2 has received intensive global attention since its spread was first
reported to the international community in early January, 2020. Multiple studies1–9
conducted collaboratively by scientists around the world have found that animal-to-human
cross-species spillover is the most likely source of SARS-CoV-2, whereas laboratory leakage
is extremely unlikely

dying or losing their sight. Yet there is a persistent sense that fungal infections receive
neither the attention nor the funding afforded to infectious diseases caused by viruses or
bacteria

increasing the risk of hospital-acquired influenza? Description of a
pragmatic preventive strategy in a French university hospital
22 Sep 2021

worldwide, with a global attack rate estimated at 5–10% in adults and around 290,000-
650,000 respiratory associated deaths1.

Decontamination of disposable respirators for reuse in a pandemic
employing in-situ-generated peracetic acid
22 Sep 2021
The corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to global shortages in personal
protective equipment (PPE) for medical staff, specifically disposable respirators.1 The severe
acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative pathogen of COVID-
19, is transmitted mainly via droplets and aerosols, thus infecting the respiratory tract of
susceptible individuals

19 Sep 2021
Inf ection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which can
result in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has caused an unprecedented global
pandemic. Because COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease, there have been high
numbers of hospital admissions, which has prompted health care facilities to adapt their
capacity and infrastructure to implement the infection

Prior infection and age impacts antibody persistence after SARS-CoV-2
mRNA vaccine
22 Sep 2021
AbstractDetermining the duration of immunity to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines is critical for
inf orming the timing of booster immunization. Many host factors could influence both the
magnitude and persistence of the antibody response. Here, we showed that SARS -CoV-2
inf ection before vaccination and age affected the decay of antibody responses to the SARS-
CoV-2 mRNA vaccine.

22 Sep 2021
AbstractBackgroundThe development of a fast and accurate, non-sputum-based point-of-
care triage test for tuberculosis (TB) would have a major impact on combating t he TB burden
worldwide. A new fingerstick blood test has been developed by Cepheid (the Xpert -MTB-

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) incidence among men who have sex with men
(MSM) living with HIV: results from the French Hospital Database on
HIV (ANRS CO4-FHDH) cohort study, 2014 to 2017
23 Sep 2021
Background Despite the availability of highly effective direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) and the
expected treatment as prevention (TasP) effect, transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV)
persists in men who have sex with men (MSM) who engage in high-risk sexual behaviours

23 Sep 2021
Prisons are high-risk settings for COVID-19 and present specific challenges for prevention
and control. We describe a COVID-19 outbreak in a large prison in Milan between 20
February and 30 April 2020. We performed a retrospective analysis of routine data collected

national health registries in Portugal, February to August 2021
23 Sep 2021
Through deterministic data linkage of health registries, mRNA vaccine effectiveness (VE)
against COVID-19-related hospitalisations and deaths was measured in 1,880,351 older
adults. VE against hospitalisations was 94% (95% confidence interval (CI): 88–97) and 82%
(95% CI: 72–89) f or those 65–79 and ≥ 80 years old, with no evidence of waning 98 days

HAND HYGIENE COMPLIANCE IN THE PREVENTION OF HOSPITAL
ACQUIRED INFECTIONS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
25 Sep 2021
Healthcare worker’s (HCW) hands are known to be a primary source of transmission of
hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Thus, practicing hand hygiene (HH) and adhering to HH
guidelines are both expected to decrease the risk of transmission but there is no consensus
on the optimal hand hygiene compliance (HHC) rate that HCWs should aim for.

Candidaemia incidence in prolonged veno-venous extracorporeal

22 Sep 2021
This single-centre retrospective study reports the dynamics of candida bloodstream infection
(CBSI) incidence in 145 patients receiving venovenous ECMO for respiratory support,
between January 2014 and December 2018. Incidence rate and odds ratio (OR) of CBSI
were calculated, stratified by week of ECMO exposure. Weekly incidence increased
throughout the ECMO run, with a rising trend in OR (P = 0

Nudging hand hygiene compliance: a large-scale field experiment on

21 Sep 2021
Hospital-care-associated infections (HCAIs) represent the most frequent adverse event

and ensuring conformity to standard precautions, particularly best hand hygiene practices, is
regarded as one of the most important and cheapest strategies for preventing HCAIs
Biocide resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii: Appraising the
Mechanisms
21 Sep 2021
A global upsurge in antibiotic resistant Acinetobacter baumannii requires supervised

On the other hand, inadequate and improper biocides have been reported as a contributing
aetiology of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
A simple method for SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection in the air of an
enclosed space
18 Sep 2021
Over one year af ter the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, routes of transmission of SARS-CoV-
2 are still debated [1]. Most authors consider proximity droplet contamination the main route
of transmission, with direct or indirect contact appearing to play a lesser role [2]. Airborne

National Surveillance Data, August 2020 to February 2021
18 Sep 2021
We observed increases in hospital-onset Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
bacteraemia rates in England between August 2020 and February 2021, to the highest levels
ever recorded since the start of mandatory surveillance in April 2017. Cases were extracted

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is a life-threatening opportunistic infection in
immunodeficient individuals. Its incidence in people living with HIV has been decreasing
since the introduction of PCP chemoprophylaxis and antiretroviral therapies. In contrast, the
incidence of PCP in non-HIV immunodeficient individuals has been rising in recent years
