Welcome to the weekly Infection Current Awareness Update (ICAU), produced by PHE Knowledge
and Library Services. The purpose of this update is to provide you with the latest, best evidence about
infection, to help you make informed decisions.

Please note: PHE KLS has set up a separate COVID-19 Daily Alert of latest research. If you would
like to receive this, please email libraries@phe.gov.uk. In addition to this, a page of resources about
the coronavirus is available here.

If you have any queries, please contact us at libraries@phe.gov.uk, and if you would like to request a
literature search, please use the Knowledge and Library Services Enquiries Portal (PHE staff only).

Please note that not all the articles and resources referred to in this alert are freely available. Some
articles may require an Athens username and password, and for PHE and NHS staff, these can be
obtained here. If you do not work for PHE or the NHS, you may want to approach your local health
library service to discuss how you may have access to library services.

drugs on opioid agonist treatment following sustained virologic response
31 Jul 2021
AbstractBackgroundAlthough efforts to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV) in people who inject drugs
(PWID) yield high rates of sustained virologic response (SVR), the relationship between successful
HCV treatment and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among PWID is poorly understood. This
study examined HRQOL changes throughout HCV treatment and post-treatment for PWID achieving

Genomic epidemiology and transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in
congregate healthcare facilities in Santa Clara County, California
30 Jul 2021
AbstractBackgroundOutbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 in long term care facilities (LTCFs) cause significant
morbidity and mortality. Mapping viral transmission within and between by combining genomic
sequencing with epidemiologic investigations enables targeting infection control interventions
Higher comorbidity burden predicts worsening neurocognitive trajectories in
people with HIV
30 Jul 2021
AbstractBackgroundAge-related comorbidities accumulate faster in people with HIV (PWH) than in
those without (PWoH). We evaluated whether a validated multimorbidity scale, the Charlson Index,
predicted neurocognitive trajectories in PWH.MethodsScaled scores a comprehensive
neuropsychological battery were averaged across all visits

Vaccine breakthrough infection and onward transmission of SARS-CoV-2
Beta (B.1.351) variant, Bavaria, Germany, February to March 2021
29 Jul 2021
A breakthrough infection occurred in a fully Comirnaty (BNT162b2) vaccinated healthcare worker with
high levels of neutralising antibodies with the SARS-CoV-2 B.1.351 (Beta) variant in February 2021.
The infection was subsequently transmitted to their unvaccinated spouse. Sequencing revealed an
identical virus in both spouses, with a match of all nine single nucleotide polymorphisms typical for B

Characteristics of viral pneumonia in the COVID-19 era: an update
27 Jul 2021
Abstract Influenza virus, rhinovirus, and adenovirus frequently cause viral pneumonia, an important
cause of morbidity and mortality especially in the extreme ages of life. During the last two decades,
three outbreaks of coronavirus-associated pneumonia, namely Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome,
Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome, and the ongoing Coronavirus Infectious Disease—2019 (COVID-
19) were
Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF) in a patient with HIV infection
27 Jul 2021
Abstract Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis is a chronic, recurrent dermatosis, of unknown etiology,
which is histologically characterized by folliculotropic inflammatory infiltrates with admixed eosinophils
in the dermis. It has often presented with immunosuppression and especially with HIV-Infection. In
the HAART-era, eosinophilic pustular folliculitis has become a rarity

CCL1 and IL-2Ra differentiate Tuberculosis disease from latent infection
Irrespective of HIV infection in low TB burden countries
29 Jul 2021
Approximately one-quarter of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.
tb), harbouring a risk of progression from latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) to tuberculosis (TB)
disease. Disease progression is associated with immunosuppression in general, but HIV-infected
individuals have a 19 fold risk compared to HIV-uninfected people (1)
Post-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination specific antibody decrease : let's get the half-

We read with great interest the papers recently published in the Journal of Infection tackling the issue

the report from Favresse et al. (1) showing that high dilution of the tested samples provided a more

27 Jul 2021
We read with interest the article by Tang et al. on the multiple introductions of variant B.1.351 into the
UK1. As SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern rapidly spread internationally, it is important to know if
increased transmissibility2–4 and virulence5 is associated with higher viral load to understand
pathogenesis and adapt if necessary the duration of isolation of infected individuals
Latent tuberculosis co-infection is associated with heightened levels of
humoral, cytokine and acute phase responses in seropositive SARS-CoV-2
infection
27 Jul 2021
Latent Tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is known to infect about a quarter of the world's population, while
SARS-CoV-2 has thus far infected over 130 million people worldwide(1, 2). Although both LTBI and
SARS-CoV-2 are co-prevalent in many parts of the world, there is a paucity of information about the
effect of co-infection on the host immune responses

The COVID-19 pandemic has put unprecedented strain on health systems around the world, and the
emergence of variants of concern (VOC) remains an area of substantial concern as we continue to
battle the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This includes
lineage B.1.1.7 (alpha variant), first detected in south-east England in September 2020 (1)
Potential impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on escalating antimicrobial
resistance in Pakistan
27 Jul 2021
We read with interest the article recently published in this journal, entitle underestimation of co-
infection in COVID-19 due to non-discriminatory use of antibiotic by Chien et al [1]. Authors
discussed the use of antibiotics and risk of antimicrobial resistance during the COVID-19 pandemic
and in this letter we explored the possible effects of COVID-19 pandemic on antimicrobial resistance
(AMR)
Emergence of Novel Recombinant Type 2 Porcine Reproductive and
Respiratory Syndrome Viruses with high pathogenicity for piglets in China
27 Jul 2021
Several studies in this journal reported genetic diversity of African swine fever virus (ASFV) genomes
and suggested ASFV was a potential threat to unaffected countries in Asia.1-3 Porcine reproductive
and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), caused by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus
(PRRSV), is another swine viral disease causing huge economic losses to the global swine industry
Impact of treatment duration on recurrence of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis
27 Jul 2021
Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is usually a chronic progressive pulmonary disease caused by
the Aspergillus species, commonly A. fumigatus. It occurs in adulthood and especially in individuals
with preexisting pulmonary conditions. 1-3 Recent European guidelines categorized CPA into several
phenotypes, i.e
Immune responses and reactogenicity after ChAdOx1 in individuals with past
SARSCoV-2 infection and those without

We have read the article by E. Sansone, et al.1 with great interest. The authors found the significant
protective effect of BNT162b2 vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 infection and symptom development
after SARS-CoV-2 infection among healthcare workers (HCWs)
Epidemiological data and genome sequencing reveals that nosocomial
transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is underestimated and mostly mediated by a
small number of highly infectious individuals.
27 Jul 2021
Limiting acquisition of SARS-CoV-2 by patients and staff in hospitals is an infection prevention and
control (IPC) priority. Despite robust efforts, both patients and staff are infected in hospitals; 10-40%
of hospital-diagnosed COVID-19 cases are thought to have been acquired in hospital, with 8700
deaths following nosocomial infection reported in the UK, [1–4] and higher rates of seroconversion
Emerging Polio Hotspots in Pakistan: Challenges and the way forward
26 Jul 2021
We read with great interest the article entitled "Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Measles
surveillance in Pakistan" by Rana M.S. et al. The authors of this article discuss the various infectious
diseases that surfaced during the COVID-19 pandemic.1 Therefore, the current article will spotlight
the re-emergence of polio in Pakistan, which is another serious public health concern.
Cross reactivity of serological response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with viral
variants of concern detected by lateral flow immunoassays
26 Jul 2021
The Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic continues to affect almost every country in the world (1).
In the UK, two main vaccines have formed the basis of the national immunisation strategy: the
AstraZeneca ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (AZ) (2) and the Pfizer-BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine
(PFZ)(3)
Extrahepatic manifestations related to hepatitis E virus infection and their
triggering mechanisms
25 Jul 2021
In the late 1970s, a new intestinally transmitted viral hepatitis that was not related to blood
transfusion was first discovered in India, and was named as hepatitis E.1 Hepatitis E virus (HEV) was
subsequently discovered by investigators in 1983 during an unexplained hepatitis outbreak among
Soviet soldiers.2 Nearly 10 years later, the viral genome of HEV was successfully sequenced
