                                          + 1 x 50’ Special

With unprecedented access and filmed over 30 years, this groundbreaking
series uncovers Jane Goodall’s journey to create the largest chimp
sanctuary in Africa, and follows the rehabilitation of a cast of orphaned
chimpanzees from recovery to eventually living in a wild environment.

From malnutrition and tetanus to disease and paralysis, the sanctuary’s
director Rebeca Atencia and her team are challenged daily on a whole
range of issues. Reacting to the problems thrown at them, but over time
building up unbelievable knowledge that is now leading the scientific
world in its approach. Their work is pivotal in supporting law enforcement
efforts to reduce illegal trafficking of great apes. No matter how many
laws are made, they can’t be enforced unless there is a safe place for the
chimps to go. That place is Tchimpounga.

                                      The Leopardess
                                                         Wildlife + Nature 2 x 50’
                                                 UHD

The gallery forests of the Serengeti are the realm of a phantom: the
shadowy thickets are the domain of a leopardess. For days, she is nearly
invisible, but then strikes out of nowhere. For some, she means sudden
death, but she hunts for a reason: She has a five-month-old cub and she
is dedicated to nothing but its survival.

Hunting is never easy. The thicket has multiple eyes and ears to announce
any predator. A stalk can last for 30 minutes or more and the slightest
mistake will ruin her efforts. Once she was successful, she won’t come
back here soon to give the prey time to forget the trauma and settle. The
secret queen of the gallery forest has done a good job, but the adventure
continues. She faces hard times and perilous encounters. The family
grows larger and the older son must make a long and dangerous journey
                                      into adulthood.

                                      Baboons: A Really Wild Family
                                                        Wildlife + Nature 1 x 50’
                                                 UHD

A troop of Anubis baboons lives in the heart of Kenya. Little by little, we
get to know the characters in the troop: There’s the wise grandfather
Babu, his son, the commanding and dominant male Mfalme, King of the
troop, the experienced mother Jamala and her newborn son, Prince Mkuu.

Through Mkuu’s eyes, we discover the baboons’ world, gradually learning
what it means to be born into this family. At night, the baboons withdraw
into the subterranean lava tubes of their cave, safe from their enemies,
the hyenas. They lie in wait on the cave’s rim, unable to climb down the
sheer walls to reach the monkeys. Africa’s Great Rift Valley becomes
the dramatic setting for dramas big and small in the life of Mkuu and
his troop. This film shows how in many ways the baboons are just little
people in fur — a really wild family!

We mostly know the nimble predators from the depths of tropical seas.
At the same time, very little is known about cold water sharks. Christina
Karliczek wants to change this and goes on an exciting expedition. The
underwater camerawoman is one of very few in this domain — having
completed special training which allows her to complete dives under ice
and into extreme depths. She films sharks with venomous spines, meets
the legendary basking shark — the second biggest fish in the world. And
                                      even finds sharks that glow!

From the fjords of Norway, she travels to the sunny islands of Sweden,
explores the North Sea near Heligoland and Scotland’s Atlantic coastline.
Under the sea ice of Greenland, Christina finally meets the ultimate cold
shark — the Greenland shark, breaking all temperature and age records
                                      among this fascinating family.

                                      Norway: Between Fjords and Fells
                                                        Wildlife + Nature 1 x 50’

Norway’s fjords and fells are among the most spectacular of what
Europe has to offer. Its wildlife is outstanding. In spring, herds of reindeer
wander from the valleys to the plateaus to spend the summer there.
Small herds of musk ox live at an altitude of over 1,000 meters in the
                                      Dovrefjells area.

These creatures are surprisingly closely related to goats. They give birth
to their offspring in the barren landscape, just like the massive moose.
Salmon migrate up icy streams to their spawning grounds and a
surprisingly colorful underwater world hides in the depths of the fjords.
The bird islands of Norway are also famous, where Northern Gannets,
Europe’s largest seabirds, breed in colonies and Atlantic Puffins raise
                                      their chicks in nesting tunnels.

The film draws an exciting portrait of Norway — the country between
                                      fjords and fells.

                                      Berlin Gone Wild
                                                        Wildlife + Nature 1 x 50’

In times of intensive agriculture and large-scale monocultures, rural life
is becoming increasingly unattractive for wildlife. It is quite different in
the diverse ecological niches of the big city. When it comes to wildlife,
Berlin is the undisputed capital. Over 200 species live in the city.

From beaver, wild boar and deer to nightingales and bats, with more and
more amazing creatures coming into the city at all times. How long will
the wild Berliners continue to feel at home in a city that is constantly
growing, where there are fewer and fewer natural oases?

In fascinating pictures, Berlin Gone Wild tells about the survival of wild
animals in a seemingly unnatural, man-made urban environment.

Nature is not just somewhere out there — it is also right here in our
neighborhood. Wild animals and plants have adapted to our lives and
enrich our daily experiences. They are an indispensable part of our
cities and can be found virtually anywhere.

Some, like the European adder or the sand lizard, are hard to spot.
Others are more adapted to the conditions in the city, and some find
really unusual living quarters. A few pairs of greylag geese for example
have decided to nest on rooftop terraces with a view onto the local
Alster canals. Foxes have taken up residence on the Hamburg airport
property. Here they have turned out to be popular, keeping the runway
                                      clear of possibly problematic birds.

The film shows the most unusual places in the city, where eagle-owls
breed, seals laze on sandbanks and beavers surf on the tidal Elbe River.

In Europe, the number of farmland birds has dropped by 17 % since 1990.
But why are they disappearing? One reason: most farmland birds breed
on the ground. What hasn’t been a problem for years now carries a high
risk. In the last 20 years, agriculture has changed so radically that there
are hardly any cows out on pastures today. Instead, they are fed grass
silage in the barn, which is harvested three to four times during the birds’
breeding season. So, on a regular basis, either the nests are destroyed,
or the chicks are killed during mowing.

This film follows a family of farmers who run a conventional dairy farm
and documents why the financial pressure limits the family’s ability to
protect the birds. Filmmaker Heiko De Groot shows how intensified
agriculture causes the decline of birds and how important birds are for
                                      us humans.

A humble river in north west Germany shows itself to be a natural
paradise, where banded demoiselle dragonflies flutter on sapphire wings
over the water-meadows, foxes bring up their young, and beavers build
                                      their lodges.

Dagmar Hilfert-Rüppell and Georg Rüppell film these butterfly-like
flying jewels in breathtaking slow-motion and macro sequences, both
above and below the water. They also reveal the fishing techniques of
the kingfishers, and of the dippers, the only songbirds that swim and
                                      hunt underwater.

This riverine life is fill of mini-dramas, from the mating flights of the male
dragonflies to the consummation of their love-wheels and the precision of
the females’ egg-laying; from the leaping, insect-grabbing attacks of the
frogs to their own desperate attempts to escape the sudden assaults of
                                      swimming grass snakes.

Taming nature and putting its energy to the service of man … it’s a
challenge which has been mastered thanks to the construction of
                                      hydro-electric barrages.

Three exceptional dams have revolutionized the technique of barrage
building and marked their era by engineering records: In 1960, the Barrage
of Serre Ponçon was the first of a series of truly gigantic feats. At a
height of more than 120 meters, its reservoir constitutes the greatest
artificial lake in France. Yet, to achieve this, in the valley below, two
                                      villages had to be flooded.

The Barrage of Romanche-Gavet was inaugurated only recently. Since
2020, it stands for a technology without par. It replaces no less than five
                                      barrages while being virtually invisible.

To overcome oceans and mountains that separate us from our neighbors,
engineers have pushed the limits of subterranean construction and dug
tunnels which were thought impossible to achieve. We follow their feats by
going back to the gigantic sites of three tunnel projects: through mountains
                                      and under sea.

In 1871, the tunnel of Mont-Cenis was the first to pierce the Alps. Work
was supposed to take up to 30 years, but a revolutionary machine turned
the world of mining upside down. The pneumatic drill broke all records

under-sea tunnel of all times. Digging virtually three tunnels over
50 kilometers under the English Channel was, in fact, a triple feat. In

Our planet’s climate has always undergone changes, but for the first time,
humanity is determining these developments. Even as politicians struggle
to find measures to limit global warming, many climate researchers now
assume that our Earth could be headed for a new hothouse period.

The series investigates our planet’s distant past to understand its present
and unravel our future. Researchers are looking at previous hot periods in
Earth’s history to find clues to how we could survive in the future.

Each episode covers a separate topic: oceans, land, civilization.
Cinematic shots of nature, landscapes, and urban life are combined with
interviews with international experts. Animated maps, visualizations of
climate data and satellite image-based animations help to understand
complex scientific concepts and imagine life in a hothouse period.

This is a modern Copernicus story that challenges us to reform our deepest
ideas about what it means to thrive as a species on planet Earth by moving
                                      towards a circular future.

Over four billion years, nature devised a flawless system that followed
the shape of the planet, and the cycle of a day. It functioned in a fully
                                      circular way and was regenerative by design. Nothing was ever wasted;
                                      everything was re-used.

In a relatively short time, humans played by very different rules. We
introduced waste into the system, took the Earth’s resources as unlimited,
and caused so much damage that we have reached an ecological tipping
point. But if we live as nature intended, we can literally change the world.
This is a story about going circular. This inspiring film takes us on a global
journey to reveal what can be done to chart a new course.

most notorious events in aviation history.

Like in 2001, when a pilot flying across the Atlantic suffered a catastrophic
fuel leak forcing him to glide the passenger plane for a full nineteen
minutes. Or when a jet plane crashed in mysterious circumstances in
California, and investigators find a loaded gun, and human finger, among

are the stories into how airline safety and design have evolved to try and
keep us all safe as we travel the skies.

Germany in 1945. A nation faces up to the ruins of its past. Hunger
and adversity shape people’s daily lives. What effect did the atrocities
of World War ll have on attitudes towards law and morality?

The two-part documentary Crime in Post-War Germany shows how
strained life was between 1945 and 1949 in the four occupied zones.
Using the example of individual, particularly serious criminal cases, like
in Dresden where a wood collector comes across the severed legs of a
person or in Hamburg, where the so-called rubble murders terrify the
                                      whole city.

Criminal psychologists and forensic experts set out to search for clues
and analyze the brutal crimes. Historians and witnesses describe the
state of emergency of the late 1940s which ended with the founding of
                                      two German states.

Forced labour in Nazi Germany was a mass phenomenon — organized by
the regime, supported by society. The use of forced labour in the Reich
happened before everyone’s eyes. It was a crime against humanity, and a
                                      billion-dollar business.

The victims were not just prisoners of war, but mostly civilians. Many
women and children were among the victims. 13 million forced laborers
were deported to Nazi-Germany during the war. About one in five did
not survive slave labour for the Germans.

The three-part documentary Hitler’s Slaves: Forced Labour under the
Nazis tells the story of the slave laborers and shows the brutal system
of Nazi slave labour based on individual fates. The series combines
scientific analyses with personal experiences of former forced laborers
                                      or their descendants.

research, this hard-hitting series gives insight into how ordinary people

On December 7, 1941, waves of Japanese aircraft appeared over Pearl
Harbor, striking the United States Navy. The attack plunged America into
war and transformed the conflict that had begun in Europe in 1939 into a
                                      global war.

Many stories have been told, detailing the Allied response, but we know
very little of the reasons why Japan marched to war. And we know little of
the lives of those conquered by the Empire and even less of the conditions
experienced on the Japanese home front.

Inside Japan’s War adds a dimension to our understanding of World War ll
                                      in the Asia-Pacific region.

This is the story of those who led, lived, suffered, and fought Japan’s War.

as the submarine. It strikes from ambush and can use nuclear missiles to
drag the whole world into the abyss.

Submarines originated from a completely non-military idea, namely to be
able to view the world under water. But the interest in the military use of
                                      submarines soon prevailed.

The two-part documentary takes a multi-faceted journey through history.
Submariners, historians and military experts put the events into context.
