THE FIRST „It’s a huge thing in an athlete’s life to be able to play at home in a world competition.” (László Nagy) Hungary (and co-organizer Slovakia) may host the European Men’s Handball Championship for the first time in January 2022. The best European teams in the women’s field have already visited Hungary twice, we organized the European Championship in 2004 and 2014 (together with Croatia), and in 1982 and in 1995 (with Austria) we hosted the World Championship. But the real pinnacle of handball will visit us in 2022, the best of the men will come to us for the first time: 24 national teams will compete in five venues.
EHF EURO 2022 The 15th European Men’s Handball Championship will be co-organized by Hungary and Slovakia from 13 to 30 January 2022. Both nations will host the best handball players in Europe for the first time, this will be the second time the continent tournament will be held in a shared order. The first European Championships were held in 1994 in Portugal – with 12 teams – and until 2018, the tournament was always hosted by a different country. In 2020, however, three nations, Sweden, Austria and Norway, hosted the European Championship, the first event, which was no longer attended by 16 but by 24 teams.
QUALIFICATION FOR THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP The qualification series for the tournament took pla- ce between January 2019 and May 2021. The two organizers, Hungary and Slovakia, as well as the two finalists from the previous European Championships, the gold medalist Spain and the silver medalist Croa- tia, are individual participants of the tournament; so teams from 44 nations fought for the remaining 20 places. In the last stage of the qualification system the 32 teams were split into eight groups of four (the group drawn was held 20 June 2020), with the winners and runners-up qualifying for the EC, together with the four best third-placed teams. (The four individual participants of the tournament played matches in the Euro Cup, a new series an- nounced by the European Federation before the pre- vious Championships).

It can rightly be called the new
European jewelry box for handball,
with its three-level stands and impres-
sive exterior and interior appearance.
The Hungarian national team will play
all its matches in this hall and if
advances, also the semi-final.
The final weekend of the European
Championship, including the match
for the 5th place, the two semifinals,
the bronze match and the final,
will also be held here.

Maximum capacity: 8 143 Szeged, one of the largest handball strongholds in Hungary, will be enriched with a new sports hall on the occasion of the European Championship. The New Arena in Szeged will be one of the largest multifunctional halls in Hungary, with a capacity of more than 8 100 people. The unique atmosphere of Szeged is now finding a new home on the banks of River Tisza. During the European Championship, one of the group rounds will be held in Szeged, with the national team matches of three European leading teams, the Croatian, the French and the Serbian.

Maximum capacity: 6 500 If Debrecen is to hold a sport event, it must be in the Főnix Hall. The city’s iconic venue, which will be renewed on the occasion for the tournament, has hosted many successful tournaments, including the 2004 and 2014 European Women’s Handball Championships and the 2018 Hungarian Junior World Championship. The facility, which seats close to 6 500 people, will host a group round during the European Championship, including the world champion Denmark as well as the European Championship 4th placed Slovenia.
