SCPOR at University of Saskatchewan Matched Funding Awards Information Package for Summer 2020 Award Call
The Saskatchewan Centre for Patient-Oriented Research’s (SCPOR) vision is to work together for a healthier Saskatchewan through patient-oriented research. For more information on SCPOR, visit www.scpor.ca. Matched Trainee Funding SCPOR is pleased to announce the opportunity to apply for matched trainee funding. The purpose of these awards is to provide support to Masters and PhD trainees, supervised at the University of Saskatchewan, who demonstrate a passion for patient-oriented research. This trainee call is administered by SCPOR. Matching funding is a 1:1 ratio. The number of available awards is dependent on the funding requested by applicants during this call.
Length of Award and Remuneration SCPOR awards operate on a 1:1 matching funding ratio. Matching funding eligibility includes: • Internal or external grant funding with exception of Tri-Agency related funding, SHRF/SCPOR patient-oriented research grant such as Sprout or Leadership. • Funds cannot be derived from a University of Saskatchewan APEF account. SCPOR will administer trainee remuneration. All matching funding must be transfered to SCPOR for this purpose. SCPOR funding is available for one year from September 1, 2020 to August 31, 2021. Award values are available up to the maximums: • Master’s Degree: $20,000 • PhD Degree: $30,000 Please note that the total award value represents both SCPOR’s contribution and the matched value brought forward by the applicant.
Eligibility Patient-Oriented Research – All trainees must be conducting a patient- oriented research project. For more information about Patient-Oriented Research, visit www.scpor.ca or CIHR SPOR website. SCPOR Supervisor(s) – The trainee must be under the supervision of at least one post-secondary researcher who has an academic appointment with supervisor privileges at the University of Saskatchewan. In Good Standing – Trainees must have a minimum 75% GPA in their current program at the University of Saskatchewan or in their last 60 credit hours. University of Saskatchewan Registered Full-Time Student – SCPOR trainees are required to be registered full-time while holding the award, meeting all requirements for such status. Holders of Previous SCPOR Awards – This award is only applicable to new SCPOR graduate students. Holders of Major Awards – Trainees who are holding major awards, such as national scholarships provided through the University or other agencies - public or private (e.g. CIHR, SSHRC, NSERC or equivalent) - are not eligible to receive SCPOR funding during the tenure of their major award. Such substantial support is defined as 50% or more of the value of the SCPOR award. Multiple Applications – Supervisors may submit a maximum of five applications per competition to ensure mentorship assistance is available. The proposed research projects must be distinct.
Important Dates Application Announcement July 7, 2020 Applications available through www.scpor.ca/trainees/#funding-opportunities Application Deadline August 14, 2020 Applications must be submitted to Tami Waldron (Tami.Waldron@usask.ca) by 4:30 pm CST Notification of Results August 21, 2020 Notification of results to both successful and unsuccessful applicants Return Signed Award Letter August 28, 2020 Successful applicants and their supervisors must return their signed letter to accept the award Funding Start Date* September 1, 2020 *Dependent on what is indicated on the application Funding End Date** August 31, 2021 **Awards can be for up to a one-year duration, dependent on approved matched funds.
The Application All SCPOR Trainee related forms, including the application form, are available at www.scpor.ca under the Trainee tab. How to Apply 1. Download the application from www.scpor.ca under the Trainee tab. 2. Collect information and fill in the application. 3. Submit the completed application form no later than 4:30 pm CST on August 14, 2020 to Tami Waldron (Tami.Waldron@usask.ca). Review Process Applications will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary team, which will include SCPOR staff, patients and patient-oriented research experts. Reviewers will be assessing the application based on the SCPOR Patient-Oriented Level of Engagement Tool (PORLET) Our review committee will also assess the required 2 page supervisor letter of support. This letter will be assessed on whether the letter adequately addresses the following: • The trainee’s ability to conduct patient-oriented research, including meaningful patient partner engagement. (1 page maximum) • The mentorship plan between the supervisor and trainee. (1 page maximum). The application will be weighted at 75% of the total review score with the remaining 25% towards the supervisor letter of support. All applications will further undergo a scientific review process. A copy of the PORLET can be found at www.scpor.ca and at the bottom of the application form. All applicants will be notified if they are successful on August 21, 2020.
SCPOR Trainee In-Kind Supports In addition to reviewing trainee funding support, SCPOR trainees receive a variety of in-kind supports*. Please see below for a list of supports available to trainees during the time they are funded as a SCPOR trainee. For further information, visit www.scpor.ca. • Patient Engagement Support – assistance with recruitment, orientation, coaching and consultation suppor and expense reimbursement. • Patient Engagement Funding – access to patient engagement funding (first-come-first-served basis). • Discounts at SCPOR Affiliated Research Labs – Clinical Trial Support Unit, Social Science Research Lab, etc. • Invitations – to a variety of SCPOR hosted workshops, networking events and seminars. • Free Training Sessions – Building Research Relationships with Indigenous Communities (BRRIC) Module training and Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Module training *SCPOR is unable to provide physical in-kind support such as office space, telephone services or data services and supports.
Terms of Reference SCPOR trainees must abide by the following in order to continue receiving support from SCPOR: • Complete the Strategy of Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Module training within six months of the funding start date. • Submit an annual progress report (due March 31) and final report to SCPOR. • Report any significant change in the project in writing to SCPOR at Tami.Waldron@usask.ca. Changes are subject to approval. • Commit to engaging patients within the research project. • Follow policies and procedures around intellectual property as per the most recent guidelines at the trainee’s home institution (University of Saskatchewan). • Follow the University of Saskatchewan College Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies polices and procedures https://cgps.usask.ca/policy-and-procedure/Admissions/admissions.php • Utilize all holidays by the end of your traineeship (if applicable). Outstanding holidays must be paid out by the supervisor.
