Introduction to the Banting PDF Purpose: • Building world-class research capacity by recruiting top-tier Canadian and international postdoctoral researchers at an internationally competitive level of funding • Attracting and retaining top-tier postdoctoral talent • Develop their leadership potential • Positioning them for success as research leaders of tomorrow Quick facts: • Valued at $70,000 per year (taxable), for two (2) years • Candidates selected through nominations from institutions • International and domestic candidates may be nominated • Fellowships can be held only at the institution who nominates • Nominees should be pursuing a fellowship beyond the university that granted their UG or graduate degrees 2
Unique application requirements Banting PDF is distinguished from existing postdoctoral fellowships programs at SSHRC, NSERC & CIHR by emphasis on: • Synergy between an applicant's individual merit and potential to launch a successful research-intensive career • Host institution's commitment to the research program and environment with which the applicant is to be affiliated. 3
Eligibility for nomination All candidates must fulfill or have fulfilled all requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree • Between November 3rd, 2008 and December 31, 2011 • Related proof must be submitted by January 15, 2012 • No earlier than November 3, 2006 • If career interrupted or delayed for the purpose of childrearing, illness, or health-related family responsibilities • For health professionals only, if have engaged in post- degree non-research related clinical training (residency, etc). Candidates who currently hold or have held agency-specific PDFs are eligible for nomination Banting PDF nominees are eligible to apply for agency- specific PDFs 4
Eligibility and host institutions Institutions eligible to host: universities, affiliated research hospitals, colleges and not-for-profit organizations with a research mandate, both nationally and internationally International candidates may only hold their Banting PDF at a Canadian institution Canadian or permanent resident candidates who obtained their PhD from a foreign university may only hold their Banting PDF at a Canadian institution Canadian or permanent resident candidates who obtained their PhD from a Canadian university may hold their award at either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada 5
Selection criteria Research excellence and leadership Quality of the applicant's proposed research program Institutional commitment and demonstrated synergy between the applicant and the institution's strategic priorities 6
Nomination process - York Supervisor nomination and AD, Research endorsement is required Two stage adjudication process – LOI and full application Letter of Intent (LOI) • One page outline of research project • Applicant’s CV (using Banting version of Common CV) • Brief rationale by proposed supervisor for the nomination, including a statement of the research support and training environment provided to the fellow • Deadline: August 29 2011 • LOIs will be reviewed and adjudicated by ADs of Research, AVPs of Research, and AD Academic and Dean of GS 7
Nomination process cont’d Full application • Online application (via researchnet) • Completed in a series of eight (8) steps • Common CV (using Banting version of Common CV) • Manager of GRIP (ORS) will work with successful LOIs to ensure competitive applications • Deadline: TBD • Full applications will be reviewed and adjudicated by ADs of Research, AVPs of Research, and AD Academic and Dean of GS • Final submission, Tri-Council deadline: November 2, 2011 8

Formatting documents All attachments to application must have the following format: • Minimum margin of 2cm (3/4 inch) around the page (top, bottom and sides) • Minimum font size of 10, Arial • Condensed type or spacing not permitted • At the top of each page, indicate your name and the title of the document as it appears in the instructions for each • For multi-page attachments, number the pages sequentially 13
Selection process – agencies Each of the Tri-Council agencies (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) conducts an interdisciplinary peer review and submits an un-ranked short list of the 35 most meritorious applicants to the Selection Board Banting Selection Board makes final recommendations to the Banting PDF Program Steering Committee, based on an assessment of the institutional commitment and alignment of the applicant's research ambitions with the institution's strategic priorities The Steering Committee will approve the final slate of 70 awardees, annually 14
Important dates for 2012-2013 cycle Internal Letter of Intent (LOI) deadline • August 29, 2011 Anticipated notification for successful LOIs • September 19, 2011 Application deadline (official nomination) • November 2, 2011 Notification of results • March 2012 Start of awards • Between April 1, 2012 and October 1, 2012 15
