Sioux Trails November/December 2021 Page 2 What is a family Friends of Scouting presentation and why is it something you don’t want to miss? Hard to believe but our Courts of Honor and Blue & Gold Banquets are coming up on us fast. Another fast-approaching milestone of the Scouting year is the Family Friends of Scouting presentations at your unit. As Scouts, we all know the quality of the program, but we don’t all know how we are able to offer it to any family who wants to participate. One of the answers to how we provide a quality program is Family Friends of Scouting. These presentations are a chance for a District level volunteer to visit with your unit, often at a Blue & Gold Banquet or Court of Honor. This is a good fit because as your unit celebrates the Scouts success, it gives us a chance to also share the good news of Scouting throughout the Sioux Council. A presenter will make a brief presentation or share a video that highlights the perks of Scouts. After that the families are invited to contribute at a personally significant level. This can vary from family to family as we all understand circumstances can vary, especially in these unprecedented times. These funds then go to help provide training, insurance, lower camp fees, better facilities. Some units can be a bit intimidated if they aren’t used to Family presentations. Please don’t be. It is a simple process that does indeed highlight the “wins” that Scouting provides. If you have not yet submitted a presentation date, please contact your district leadership to do so. Thanks, and see you all at a Family F.O.S presentation! The Re-charter processes for the BSA are now in full swing all across the country, and so too here in Sioux Council. The online Webinars were very well attended by our units and we had a tremendous number or questions during and after them that we hope were all answered. However—we know things will continue to pop up with the new system for us all. Please make sure you stay in contact with your Unit Commissioner, District Commissioner, or District Executive about any questions. We want to make sure we address these as fast as possible, as it is highly likely your question is also a concern for others. Remember that all units will be submitting their charters through the new system that is located in Internet Advancement 2.0. There is no need for additional codes for logging into the system; your normal logins are all you need for access. The BSA has created what they are calling the ‘Recharter Sandbox’ -- a place to go and play around with the recharter system that is NOT your actual recharter and let you give it a test run and see how it works. The link to that area is: https://advancementspp.scouting.org Please note that ONLY unit Key 3 and designees can access the ‘Sandbox’ to look at this process as they are the only ones who are able to work with the Recharter process. We know that this will be an unusual recharter process but we are VERY certain that once you are using the new system you will really see it is much more user friendly and will be a fast way to take care of all the parts to getting things finished each year for your Pack, Troop, or Crew. Everyone should keep the date of Dec 17th on their calendars as the ‘Official’ date charters are due in the Sioux Council, BSA. However, each district may have a special turn in type event of their own a little earlier at potentially Roundtable or other district type function just to help with the process. Your District Executive and Roundtable team will keep you updated on such turn in events and /or locations.
Sioux Trails November/December 2021 Page 3 Popcorn As this edition of Sioux Trails goes to press, we are wrapping up our popcorn sales. While we’d love to have results to share with everyone, the calendar just doesn’t quite line up to make that hap- pen. What we can do is thank everyone involved with the popcorn sale. Dan, Brent and Veda were outstanding kernels for the districts. Each one brought something different to the table to make things go smoothly for the volunteers and Scouts. It isn’t always easy to fund raise, that is no se- cret. The popcorn sale and the efforts you put into it are outstanding. One time, one month, go hard and pay for your whole year of Scouting can be daunting at first but so rewarding. So, thank you all for what you do. As popcorn wraps up, please remember what it is the popcorn sale can do for you. Use that money for quality program that gets family excited. We have heard from several struggling units, only to find out they have thousands and thousands of dollars in the bank. Scouting isn’t about selling popcorn for the sake of having money. It is about earning your way to doing great things. So now that you sold, enjoy the fruits of your labor, and do some “Wow” program with your packs & troops!
Sioux Trails November/December 2021 Page 4 Commissioner’s Corner The COVID-19 pandemic was tough on Scouting units, especially Cub Scouts (if you find virtual meetings frustrating to sit through, imagine how your 7-or 8-year-old feels! As we transition into a post-pandemic era, what is a solution for returning to normalcy? Start a Cub Scout pack. Even better, start a Tiger den. That was National Commissioner Scott Sorrel’s advice during the BSA’s recent national annual meeting. “I sense a level of anxiousness and enthusiasm as we’re coming out of this unusual period in our history,” Sorrels says. “Scouting can be an ideal structure for the American family to get on its feet again.” For more than 110 years, the Boy Scouts of America has helped change the lives of millions of young men and women, teaching the values outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. The organization continues that mission, and those in the program know the life-changing opportunities Scouting provides both youth and adult leaders. One challenge, though, is meeting the needs of today’s families, addressing busy schedules, cost prohibitions and different priorities in diverse communities. It’s an ongoing conversation that will call on the voices from everyone. That includes Scouts, too. A recent Harvard University study on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic found that two-thirds of the study group, which consisted of youth ages 7 to 15, showed clinically significant signs of anxiety and depression. However, research shows that those troubling effects can be reversed through positive experiences and challenges, structured routines, exercise, and less screen time. Sounds like Scouting can be an answer, just as it has been for more than a century. “We do a very good job of talking about the passion and the experience of Scouting within the Scouting family,” Sorrels said. “Something we’re working very hard on is communicating the value of the experience to non-Scout families.” Unit and district commissioners are the guardians for our front-line volunteers who are out there serving America’s youth in units or working in district or council committees. Scouting happens locally. A commissioner’s fundamental job is to do everything we can to partner with those volunteers, collaborate with them, and make them successful. In the end, parents, unit leaders, council professional staff, national staff – we all have the same goal: to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes. So please – if you have an question, reach out to your commissioner. Or better yet – consider becoming a commissioner!
