SCMS 2020-2021 Teacher of the year:
Starting Monday, January 11th will start
“Carl Ratliff Week”

Carl Ratliff began teaching Band at South Charlotte Middle School in August 1997. He received
Bachelor of Music and Masters of Arts in Teaching Degrees from Winthrop University. The son of
former teachers (Carl M. & Janice Ratliff) are grateful for the opportunity to teach music to young
people! In addition to serving as a teacher mentor, he performs actively with several bands in the
Carolinas as well as his church choir. Mr. Ratliff is very appreciative of the wonderful support he
receives from his esteemed principal, Mrs. Bailes, an excellent administrative team, hardworking
and supportive teachers and counselors, staff, and parents, incredible Fine Arts Network, and
talented and caring students. He is proud of the accomplishments of many students as they were
selected for honor bands (County, District & State), junior youth symphony orchestras, and honor
jazz bands (Region & State) as well as the principal clarinetist of the Charlotte Symphony (Taylor
Marino). Mr. Ratliff received “The Outstanding Jazz Educator Award” from the North Carolina
Western Region Jazz Association 2017. After many years of teaching, Mr. Ratliff never regrets
having to report to South Charlotte Middle School.

The Counseling team is working from home between the hours of 8am-4pm. Counselors want to
support students and families in need. Counselors do not have access to their work phones, but are
accessible by email and Remind. Please join your class Remind below so that your counselor can
contact you with helpful information, and you can let your counselor know that you need them.

Your 2020-2021 story is as unique as this school year. We don't know how this year is going to
turn out, but..........We do Know that we are going to create an awesome yearbook for our
whole school community to enjoy now and for years to come.
We need YOUR help to do that! The yearbook team can't be everywhere
(or anywhere at this point), so we need you to help get as many photos as
possible. We want everyone included in making the 2021 yearbook a true
community effort.
Virtual School Photos: The yearbook staff needs pictures of South Charlotte students
participating in virtual school. Students, send us high-quality, close-up photos of you doing things
like:
*Playing an instrument in band
*Drawing/painting in art
*Dancing in dance
*Stretching in PE
*Working in a workbook
*Reading a book
*Anything!Did you know that your PTO pays for your students agendas and Chromebook bags in advance? These items total over $35 per year. As of right now, only 38% of SCMS students have paid. Yes, that means 62% of you have NOT paid. The school is asking for PTO to purchase more Chromebook bags for returning students over the next few weeks. Online School Payments (OSP) - CMS has provided us with the opportunity to accept payments for
school events on-line. It is much like Athletics Pay-to-Play, comes with a fee (4%), and allows you to
pay at your convenience. If you choose to pay on-line, it also relieves our teachers from the time
taken to do the paperwork and to receipt and turn in money or checks. Teachers will continue to take
cash and checks as they always have.

Choose your student’s event and homeroom teacher, and make payment.
The teacher and Financial Secretary are sent advisements of your payment.
