SAUTER novaPro Open: A SCADA system that provides all needs for any type of building. Open for public buildings Secure for FDA Compatible Flexible and GAMP for hotels for offices 2
A building management system designed for top BACnet performance with full security. BACnet: a data communication protocol BACnet is a data communication protocol for building automation and control networks and a communication protocol for building management systems (BMS). Though it is an international standard (ISO 16484 5), it is neither hardware nor software nor firmware. BACnet is an open, standardised technology and stands for Building Automation and Control networks. It is best described as: • a set of rules (services) • data information (objects) • connectivity (network options) for open, manufacturer-independent, networked building automation and control systems (BACS). BACnet for integrated BACS and RACS Historically, the most widely-deployed BACnet applications are in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning). Nowadays, however, BACnet co- vers all building automation and control systems (BACS), as well as the room automation and control systems (RACS), i.e.: • Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning • Fire and life safety • Intrusion alarm systems • Access control • Lighting and sun protection control • All other building automation systems BACnet is a registered trademark of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE). 3
BACnet benefits Economic benefits: Standard and open protocol Single-operation workstation for all building automation systems Maximum flexibility and cost-effectiveness for facility owners and managers Competitive system expansion Can be easily enhanced and improved Eliminates the risk of being ‘locked in’ to a single supplier Technical benefits: Can be implemented in devices of any size Interoperability Data sharing Alarm and event management Scheduling Trending Device and network management 4
BACnet operation Building automation has a set of rules governing the exchange of data over the network and specific prerequisites to control equipment. BACnet can accommodate these special rules and respond to the specific needs of building automation systems by providing standardised functions to help to enable the creation of systems that can interoperate. All information within an interoperable BACnet device is modelled in terms of one or more data objects. Each object re- presents an important component of the device, or some collection of information that may be of interest to other BACnet devices. BACnet services can, for example, ask for the value of a temperature, define a fan operating schedule, send a pump status alarm and so on. BACnet devices exchange information over the network by sending and receiving digital telegram messages in a stream of numeric codes that represent the desired information. BACnet Objects BACnet Services BACnet Networking BACnet connectivity BACnet provides a variety of network options: Ethernet 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps (can use a variety of physical media, e.g. coaxial cable, twisted pairs, even fibre optic cable) ARCNET 2.5 Mbps (can use a variety of physical media, e.g. coaxial cable, twisted pairs, even fibre optic cable) MS/TP Up to 115 kbps (master-slave/token-passing; network designed to run at lower speeds over twisted pairs) LonTalk™ Network developed by Echelon; can also be used on various media PTP ‘Point-to-point’ protocol (for use over phone lines or hard-wired RS-232 connections) BACnet/IP 10/100 Mbps (can use a variety of physical media, usually Ethernet with CAT5 cable, but also fibre optic cable or even (x)DSL lines) ZigBee Network involving a set of wireless nodes in a meshed network BACnet data can be transmitted by any network technology, if and when it becomes cost-effective to do so. Besides allowing the use of different LANs, the BACnet standard also specifies how to build routers or, in other words, how to connect together either multiple networks of similar type or completely different networks. The appropriate network tech- nology can be chosen to connect devices together in order to optimise the implementation, performance and costs. This provides excellent flexibility and connectivity. 5
BACnet – interoperability and quality If an installation contains different BACnet products from different vendors, interoperability is guaranteed in several ways: by the manufacturer’s Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS); by the BTL mark for BACnet products on the BACnet International’s BTL listing; by WSPCert’s BACnet pro- duct certification listed by BIG-EU; and, finally, at interoperability workshops (PlugFest) organised by the BACnet communities. novaPro Open benefits from SAUTER’s great BACnet experience. As a compa- ny, SAUTER has been in existence for more than a century. The BACnet driver for novaPro Open was developed in accordance with the guidelines drawn up by SAUTER’s best BACnet specialists, who are also involved in the BACnet community. 6
novaPro Open: a BACnet advanced workstation novaPro Open’s leading-edge BACnet integration features: • A communication driver based on BACstac™ 6 • An automated tag generator • A user-friendly management interface • Full integration with a web scheduler for BACnet schedule and calendar objects • Automated, full integration of BACnet alarms and events to novaPro Open’s notification system Complexity made easy As a SCADA platform, novaPro Open automatically recognises any connected BACnet device and can easily generate the structure of the application. By supporting multiple communication protocols, such as OPC (LonWorks, KNX/ EIB, SNMP etc.), Modbus (RTU and TCP) and many others found in BMS, the platform facilitates the integration of all the equipment within a building, even from multiple suppliers. In addition, support for connectivity with ODBC, SQL, XML, TXT and others, as well as support with a Soft PLC, makes novaPro Open a leading-edge platform for SCADA, especially for BMS. Project engineering Fast and easy BACnet-related tag creation with SAUTER CASE Suite, the engineering tool for SAUTER’s building automation and control system. • Saves time by creating the application using fully-integrated engineering tools 7
novaPro Open: BACnet functions SAUTER offers extensive BACnet integration, which enables even complex object types to be managed directly within novaPro Open. novaPro Open and the BACnet driver The BACnet driver (VPIWNBCN) for novaPro Open turns novaPro Open into a BACnet advanced operator workstation. SAUTER novaPro Open has two operation modes with integrated BACnet/IP, BBMD, FD, half-router and router functionality: a) BACnet advanced workstation, suitable for configuring BACnet servers and accessing any property of any object. b) Standard SCADA operation, providing a graphical, intuitive user inter- face in order to allow the end user to access and operate the plant very easily. Data sharing, scheduling, notification and trending services are fully integrated with the services of the SCADA system. The BACnet Advanced Workstation (B-AWS) is the client aspect of any BACnet system, i.e. the ‘centralised BMS brain’. novaPro Open with the BACnet driver fully conforms to the BACnet standard profile B AWS, supporting all types of BACnet objects. WSPCert BACnet certificates 8
