neighbourly.co.nz JANUARY 11, 2020, THE SATURDAY EXPRESS 3 State housing boost for Marlborough RAHUL BHATTARAI Marlborough will get eight new state homes in the next financial year and its existing stock will get a $500,000 boost. 4 THE SATURDAY EXPRESS, JANUARY 11, 2020 neighbourly.co.nz Rewiring our brains for better health Blenheim mental health advo- cate Lee Griggs discusses how we can rewire our brains to achieve physical and mental goals. You may have heard the tale of the ‘‘Two Wolves’’, where an Indian chief explains to his young grandson that he has two wolves fighting inside of him. The first wolf is full of anger, greed, resentment and self-pity. The second is full of joy, kind- ness, empathy and compassion. He goes on to explain that the fight is inside everyone – you, me and everyone around. The boy thinks for a while and then asks ‘‘who will win?’’ The chief answers, ‘‘which ever one you feed.’’ This may be an old tale, but full of wisdom, and is actually now backed by science. The study of neuroplasticity has shown the way in which our brains develop, grow and adapt. Based on two main principles, ‘‘use it or lose it’’ and ‘‘neurons that fire together wire together’’, neuroscientists have shown that much like the Indian chief was trying to convey, the more we Lee Griggs is taking on the Backwards Brain Bicycle Challenge to raise mental health awareness. neighbourly.co.nz JANUARY 11, 2020, THE SATURDAY EXPRESS 5 ‘Irish banter’ was shared at the Blenheim croquet club last Friday, as the Irish croquet team stopped in on the way to the world championships. The 2020 Golf croquet world teams championship is being held in Nelson from 6-12 Janu- ary, hosting teams from the top eight countries, including Aust- ralia, Egypt and South Africa. Members of the Blenheim croquet club hosted a practice game against the Irish team, described as ‘‘very hospitable’’, in Blenheim last Friday. Blenheim croquet club pub- licity officer Barbara Guillemot said the friendly match was good news after the Australian team were forced to pull out before Christmas. "There’s not enough courts over there so they’re coming here to practice,’’ Guillemot said. ‘‘Initially Aussie were coming and then they pulled out, and we just got an email yesterday to say that Ireland would come.’’ The croquet scene in Blen- Blenheim Croquet Club players Sam Robinson, left, Barb Guillemot, Pauline Davis and Ewan Robinson are excited to play against Irish croquet players on heim is surprisingly active, Friday. 6 THE SATURDAY EXPRESS, JANUARY 11, 2020 neighbourly.co.nz When the Navy came to Blenheim "Almost retired teacher’’ Rus- sell Gifford remembers his schooldays spent in and around Blenheim in the 1950s. This week he recalls a little known visit by the Navy. I recall a number of visits by the Navy to Picton. There was HMNZS ‘‘Bellona’’ and ‘‘Black Prince’’ and a bit later ‘‘Royalist’’ and no doubt other visits over the years. But it wasn’t usual for the Navy to visit Blenheim – in a ship I mean. But Robert did it. Two ships in fact. Two RNZN Fairmile launches made their way up the Ōpaoa River to Eckford’s wharf just over from the Railway Sta- tion. Robert knew he could do it because his father had been bringing the Echo up the same river for years. The Echo would arrive with bits of willow branch caught up on the mast. It was all a bit marginal but the Echo would not be daunted and kept the service going for many years. A regular cargo for example were cylinders of welding gas. I don’t remember any great fanfare announcing the arrival of the Navy in town and I don’t recall seeing any photos. Two Navy launches made their way carefully up Blenheim’s Ōpaoa River in the 1960s.
