editor's note. 95 years strong! As we celebrate this milestone for The Junior League of Tampa, we looked to The Sandspur archives for inspiration and nostalgia for this issue. In any other year, the 95th anniversary issue would be filled with celebratory events but the 2020-2021 League year was truly like no other. We have highlighted this year like no other in the Splinters from the Board. We borrowed the title from an article in an issue of The Sandspur from the 1950's. Of course, it has a 2021 spin to it. Take the time to read how leaders from around the League adapted and showed resiliency throughout the last year. THE SANDSPUR: LOOKING TO THE PAST AND THE FUTURE The Sandspur Spotlight (page 52-53) was originally published in Spring 2012 issue. The article highlights every Editor from 1949 to 2012. president's note. Over the course of our 2020-2021 League year, we have experienced unprecedented changes in our communities, schools, workplaces, life, and everything in between. However, I could not be more proud of The Junior League of Tampa, its members, and its partners. Given the challenges faced over the past year, people came together and continued to not only focus on connecting with one another. They also continued to focus on JLT’s mission. A mission that has helped so many in the Tampa Bay area over the course of 95 years. Think about that, 95 years! Celebrating this milestone anniversary has been an absolute honor. To know that we are a part of a legacy that means so much to so many is special and inspiring. It represents decades of volunteer efforts, leadership development, community service, advocacy efforts, personal development, and lifelong membership connections. The foundation was set in 1926 by 22 courageous members. Even as times change, the members keep the organization moving forward. I often wonder what members were facing at different times. How did they adapt to help others? What challenges were facing their community? How did they come together to face the unknown? There is much to consider but, in those thoughts, I come back to strength in ourselves and in our community. Something that was truly highlighted this year. When we could have shut down or given up, the members and organization upheld their focus and let not a single opportunity go. Instead they took chances and adapted to find new ways to support the community, just as we have for past 95 years, by focusing on the critical needs of our Tampa Bay community. Decisions were made and the hard work put in to maintain a healthy organization, reimagine fundraisers, adjust projects and programs, and continue to invest in our community and members. Throughout the year, major milestones were met, like the millionth diaper distributed in our community, a virtual match and drive adoption event, thousands of books distributed, a virtual world becoming the source for all things fundraising and leadership development, and more! The most important part of it all, was the way we empowered each other. People led with empathy, lifted one another up, and supported fellow members. It was all about the human spirit and The Power of Us. You came together and made it happen. That is the inspiration behind this expanded The Sandspur edition together. We want to take you down memory lane and highlight some of JLT’s 95 years of impact. You will see what members were doing in different times and how we have continued to evolve and grow. That evolution is represented today in each of you, the League, and our community. Thank you for being a significant part of JLT’s legacy. As the year comes to a close, I reflect proudly on the last 12 months, our partnerships, who we are as an organization and the brilliant membership that continue to act as catalysts for lasting community change. You all make it happen. Thank you for the most incredible experience and I am excited for our next 95! I am so confident in our leadership, organization, and members who will continue to champion our community and each other. I am leaving a different woman and honored to have been given such an extraordinary gift of representing this unbelievable organization and members. With love and gratitude, Meghan McGuire President 2020-2021 13
sustainer president's note. As I reflect on next year, I look forward with optimism to the renewed commitments and new opportunities that will ignite our future! Condoleezza Rice says, “Life is full of surprises and serendipity. Being open to unexpected turns in the road is an important part of success.” While many of us will nod our heads and say “Of course, this is true.” you will also know that our Sustainer leadership team embraced this sentiment with vengeance this particular year. Certainly, we did not shift our goals! However, flexibility and adaptability became our mainstay as we partnered with Active members on our virtual platform to provide meaningful and engaging programs. We intentionally opened our 2020-2021 Back to the League meeting with Vicki Clark’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program to ensure that Sustainer members were informed and aligned with this League initiative. The plan is to continue this collaboration as JLT’s goals evolve. This fall and spring we Louisa Van Eepoel, Sustainer President launched our Meet the Author series with New York Times Best Selling authors. This was extremely popular and we intend to continue this series. We also Beth Schatzberg, continued our popular Art series which included an internationally renowned Sustainer President-Elect portrait artist from the National Arts Club in New York City, where he is in residence. Many who attended envision a trip to NYC to visit his gallery! We also Barbara Ryals, featured several of our talented Sustainers in a program that highlighted their Executive Board Sustainer At-Large art and inspiring stories. This event received rave reviews from the attendees and underscores the opportunity to continue to highlight “Our Very Own” talent. Ginny Veit, As always, it was an honor to celebrate our 50-year anniversary Sustainer Management Council members with testimonials and Judi Lisi, President and CEO of the David Straz Sustainer At-Large Center for the Performing Arts as our guest speaker. She generated much excitement as she shared 2021-2022 plans and future vision for the expansion. Angie Ammon, Sustainer Recording Throughout this year, to say we felt the need to connect in person with our Secretary members is an understatement! A soon as we got the word that we could have Janet Mendez, 30 members in a venue with appropriate space guidelines we scheduled a Sustainer Corresponding series of events including several of our Pop Ups, a Riverwalk / Armature Tour Secretary / brunch adventure, the Past Sustainers of the Year luncheon, and a visit with Richard Gonzmart at Cafe Santo Stefeno. The truth is, we were all really VERY Denise Cassedy & Penny happy to see each other! Parks, Sustainer Event Co-Chairs We were poised in 2020-2021 to engage with our Active partners by expanding Genet Stewart, our community service options. We created a Sustainer Board position to Sustainer Community ensure that this initiative was launched. We will certainly be in a position this Service Chair Fall 2021- 2022 to go forth with this goal. Ginny Charest, Throughout the year, our Sustainer leadership team LISTENED TO and VALUED Sustainer Treasurer & your wise and creative suggestions. Indeed, they inspired our programs and Communications Liaison ultimately our venues! You have been generous, kind, supportive and extremely patient as we navigated this year! Looking forward to 2021-2022, we know that much was learned which will certainly impact the coming year. There are opportunities to continue and expand certain programs and advance new ideas. These new ideas include the option to execute in efficient yet engaging ways. The Sustainers, once again, demonstrated that we are a resilient and persistent group! It has been your leadership team’s honor and privilege to serve you as we embraced our challenges head on and powered through this year! With much gratitude, Louisa Van Eepoel 14 | Spring/Summer 2021
