SALE YARDS CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HISTORY The Jamestown saleyards were opened in their present position in 1969 the yards were built jointly by Elders, Dalgety’s and Southern farmers. With the first sale in February of that year. The yards were moved to their current spot after two previous positionings, one where the current caravan park is and then where Perry’s fuel depot of today. When the yards were opened they would cater for sheep and lambs, pigs and a separate complex for cattle. The majority of sheep in the earlier years were walked to the sale yards or brought in by rail as most trucks were only two and three decks. SALE YARD HISTORY CONT... 1986 Continued from Front Page... The catering for the yards was carried out by people from the Home for the Age and the standard sandwiches was Mutton & Chutney. The canteen and office complex was a simple tin shed on the eastern side of the yards which would go under water in the event of a rainy sale. The yards continue in their early form until 1994, when several neighbouring town saleyards were closed, and the Crystal Brook sale yards were brought to Jamestown and re-erected at the Southern end. In 1996 extra trees were planted for shade in this new section. In 2000 a watering system was introduced to the yards to minimise dust, and in 2009 the four ramps were replaced with electric winches. In the same year a new canteen, office complex with a toilet and shower system was built and financed jointly by the agents, council & the federal government together with the vendors that sold sheep though the yards in the form of a levy. In 2014 a huge renovation to the 2019 yards took place and some of the original yards were totally replaced. The Jamestown saleyards have been operated jointly by Landmark and Elders during these 50 years on a regular monthly and by monthly basis. It is a testament to the local producers and numerous staff that have worked through these yards that they still exist today where nearly every other saleyard complex in surrounding towns have almost all been demolished. The Thursday market days represent a boost for the local shop keepers in the town with people travelling near and far for the sale and a general catch up. During the last 50 years we have seen the lows of the sheep market where entire pens of sheep were sold for as low as $20 per pen to present day times where we are seeing numerous pens selling to more than $200 per head. From the early days with the sheep not only being railed to the yards but also the majority railed from the sale, to today where we see four deckers, B doubles, road trains & AB Triples all loading into and out of the sale. During the 50th Year the agents have introduced an interfaced sale with Auctions Plus participating in the physical sale. This has proven to be very successful in the couple of times that is has been used with buyers being able to logon and access the sale from far and remote areas. With this new innovate selling process we see the longevity of the Jamestown Sale yards complex. Jenny demonstrated putting the flowers onto silk and the method she uses to fix the colours. As all flowers are different, so too are the colours produced on silk, and every scarf is different. Jenny is excited about this experimental work, and said that natural dying is becoming popular. It takes about 6 weeks to make each scarf. JAMESTOWN COMMUNITY CHILDREN’S CENTRE NEWS We have made smoothies, pizza, biscuits, fruit salad and scooping out balls of watermelon. We practiced lots of skills including cutting up the fruit and rolling out the biscuit dough. Cooking is always a favourite activity for the children. It is great for math skills, with measuring and weighing, and they are more likely to try different foods if they have helped cook or even grow them. We have explored with different textures and getting involved in some messy play. We constructed a beach with the inclusion of sandy playdough. This playdough felt a little different to the smooth playdough we normally explore. We have also explored with jelly slime. When we first took the jelly from the fridge it was so cold it even had a thin layer of ice on it. Once the ice melted everyone had a go squishing the jelly through their fingers. We even found some jelly worms. We used our hands to paint some pictures. We found that by using our fingers we could make lots of squiggly lines. We have also mixed colours into the soapy foam. As we used the whisks we watched as the foam went from white to many shades of the rainbow. We have continued to occupy the mud patch, adding more and more water and creating a wonderful muddy mess! We have started to see the Nature Play onesies and some gum boots come out on the colder days to keep us warm and clean in the mud. You can pump water into the dirt and make lots of sloppy, squelchy mud! We Introduced “onesies” to the children and gave them the Notice of Special option to wear one with some gumboots if they wanted to. Lots General Meeting of children took this opportunity to get very muddy, splashing, yelling “cannon ball” and jumping in and some even sat in it!
