Page 2 January 9, 2022 AW F T P Pastor The celebration of The Baptism of Our Lord seems a little strange. Reverend Paul G. Seaman Baptism, as we know it, brings us into God’s Family “In the name frpaul@stgeorge60477.org of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Clearly, when John the Baptist baptized Jesus, it was something different. John Pastor Emeritus was calling people to repentance, a healing of a broken Reverend Kenneth Fleck relationship with God. The baptism Jesus inaugurated was Associate Pastor different. The baptism we celebrate is one of welcoming and inclusion. While Reverend Tomasz Puslecki forgiveness of Original Sin is certainly part of baptism, it is entrance into the frtom@stgeorge60477.org community of faith and adoption as a child of God that overshadows all else. In baptism, we make (or our parents make) a promise to commit our life to God Deacons and the Christian way of life within the Catholic Church. Parents stand before Gregory Bartos God and His People and promise to raise their child so “he may love the Lord gbartos@stgeorge60477.org and his neighbor as Christ taught us.” (Order of Baptism) Some Christian Joe Panek communities do not baptize infants because they believe a person should be jpanek@stgeorge60477.org making this promise consciously, for themselves. That makes sense. However, Thomas Schutzius since the time of Saint Augustine, the Catholic Church has emphasized the tschutzius@stgeorge60477.org value of washing away Original Sin. Thus, giving the child a faith from the Jerry Souta beginning, the person may grow spiritually in a rich and powerful way. jsouta@stgeorge60477.org Joe Truesdale Naturally, the parents play a pivotal role. A spiritual relationship with God rarely jtruesdale@stgeorge60477.org comes without encouragement. Parents become messengers of God’s grace. In order for this to be done most effectively, it is vital that the parents themselves Business Manager have a living and active relationship with God. The gift of God is that a Renee Beemsterboer relationship with Him can be built at any time! Even if a person has not rbeemsterboer@stgeorge60477.org developed this relationship, it is never too late. The desire for God brings us to a Fax: 708-532-2055 realization that we are not complete without Him. Sometimes people feel they should allow their child to make up their own mind, so they do not have them Children’s Faith Formation baptized. The fact is, the child will make up his or her mind along the way. But Angela Kvasnica the beauty of knowing God from a young age can be a salvation (on many Phone: 708-532-8211 different levels!). Fax: 708-532-3372 From my own experience, I know this to be true. I was six years old when my akvasnica@stgeorge60477.org religioused@stgeorge60477.org mother died. Suddenly, I was asking great big questions and trying to squeeze them in a child’s brain: Where is Mom? Can she see me? What is heaven like? School Principal Does she still love me? Why did God want her so badly? Without the faith she Charlotte Pratl and my father gave me, even at that early age, I think my life-view would have Phone: 708-532-2626 been tremendously different. And from this side of things, I believe I am Fax: 708-532-2025 much happier and joyous not because I have all the answers, but I know I cpratl@stgeorgeschool.org am not alone. If I had not been brought to church regularly, my mother’s funeral would have taken place in a strange and unfamiliar building, filled with statues staring blankly at me, with no sense of comfort. The Mass would have been alien to me and its effects only confusing and frightening. Children deserve better than that, not in case of a funeral but for the general questions and qualms of growing up. We see a world were those questions and qualms come more frequently and fiercely. With the breakdown of families, respect for authority, loss of trust in seemingly every institution, where can a person find a guiding star to make sense of all this? And more so, a way to make it better? God is that beautiful gift. And we first encounter Him in our baptism.

Looking for a way to decrease your Illinois state income tax liability? What if you could decrease what you owe to the state and potentially increase your state tax refund, while also helping fund scholarships for low-income students to attend the Catholic school of their choice? The Illinois invest in kids tax credit scholarship program awarded scholarships to more than 9,300 students in the first four years. This year, as a global pandemic has created so many uncertainties in our society, you can still invest in a brighter future for children from our most vulnerable communities. By contributing through the Illinois Invest in Kids program you can make the lifelong advantage of a Catholic school education possible. Thanks to the generosity of several donors, between December 1, 2021 and February 28, 2022, you can take advantage of a 2-for-1 matching gift program that will triple the impact of your gift!
