St. Edna ~ Sharing Sunday August 15 - Assumption of Mary This week we will celebrate the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. According to the Francisca Media: “On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assump on of Mary to be a dogma of faith: ‘We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.’ The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church.” We find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In following centuries, the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However by the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names—Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption—from at least the fifth or sixth century. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity. Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s Assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God’s people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testaments, her Assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman’s victory.” Take a few minutes this week to look at our statue of Mother Mary that is on the Tabernacle side of the front of our worship space. Mary, with her hands spread out, is standing on a serpent on top of the earth. Have you wondered why? Speculation is that Mary is squashing the snake, who represents the Devil. Mary, by being the mother of Jesus, has a direct connection with the demise of the Devil. Her Son, triumphed over evil – she helped crush the Evil one. Now notice her outstretched hands. Not out like we see Jesus’ hands in the crucified position, but out in a welcoming, motherly way. He gesture seems to say, Come here, I am here for YOU. And now, again look under her feet. She is on top of the world. If God sent and angel to tell you that you “..have found favor with God.” And that you would bear a son who would “be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David…and his kingdom will have no end. (Luke 1: 30, 34)” you too, would feel like you were on top of the world. Nancy Holpuch Labor Day Office Hours Please note: Due to the Labor Day holiday, there will not be a 5:30pm Mass on Sunday, September 1. The Parish Office will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 2. On Labor Day, there will be a 9:00am Mass to commemorate the holiday. There will not be a daily 8:00am Mass nor a 6:45am Communion Service that day. No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church; No matter what your current family or marital situation; No matter what your past or present religious affiliation; No matter what your personal history, age, background, race or color; You are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved and respected at St. Edna Church. 2 August 11, 2019
St. Edna ~ Sharing Sunday Dear Friends of St. Edna, Debbie and I want to thank everyone for the wonderful sendoff we were given on July 21st. It was so wonderful to have the opportunity to say good bye to everyone. More importantly we want to thank everyone for your love and support over the past 9 years we served as a deacon couple. As I mentioned in my final homily, I truly believe in my heart that if it were not for the love, compassion, support and understanding of this wonderful community, my journey in becoming a deacon would not have been possible. I have learned so much during my time here at St. Edna due to the wonderful priests, staff, deacons, and of course the incredible parishioners. As you enter the doors into the church from the narthex it says, “In this place Extraordinary Miracles happen from time to time, quiet wonders happened every day”. This happens not because of the place, but because of the wonderful people in this place. I feel I have received several miracles from all of you over my many years at St. Edna, and without a doubt quiet wonders every day. This community will always remain in my heart and you without a doubt remain in my prayers. God Bless! Deacon Greg Beeber Summer Mission Sister Mary Ann Barnhorn of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur will be speaking about the need for clean water in Africa at the Masses on Saturday, August 24th and Sunday, August 25th. Throughout Africa, there is a critical lack of clean water for drinking and sanitation: Almost one billion people do not have access to safe water. Next weekend a special collection will be taken to help the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur provide life-changing electricity and clean water to the people in Africa. Mary Ann Barnhorn entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1952 in Cincinnati. Early on she taught elementary school, high school religion and adult religious education. She later developed educational programs for pastors and pastoral associates throughout the country as a member of the National Pastoral Life Center in New York. Also, she served as Executive Director of the National Association of Church Personnel Administrators. She has served in congregational leadership for 15 years, six as provincial, and most recently completed 21 years as mission advancement and development director for the Sisters of Notre Dame of the Ohio Province. In addition, she has played an active role in the wider Notre Dame world, traveling throughout the United States as well as to Europe and Africa. www.stedna.org 3

Take Five for Faith monthly columns expressed that devotion to a sizeable readership. Human like the rest of us, Maximillian sometimes was a difficult colleague, and initially his publications reflected some of the anti-Semitic rhetoric of his time and place. However, he never abandoned the work of promoting faith, citing indifference as the poison of the time. Sentenced to Auschwitz in 1941, he ultimately gave his life to save another prisoner. His was a martyrdom of love. Be mindful today of the toxin of indifference within and around you. The questions is this: “What do you treasure?” Of course, we all know the “right” answer: we treasure our faith, our family, and our friendships. But Jesus tells us in the Gospel passage from Luke how we can discover the real answer to this question. He says, “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” To discern what we really treasure, we need to do a check on our hearts. We can each ask ourselves, “Where do I spend the majority of my energy? Where do I find my thoughts dwelling? How do I choose to spend my time when I find myself with a few spare moments? What do my spending habits reveal about my what is important to me? As Christian stewards, we are called to live our lives in grateful response to all that God has given us. Do I recognize and treasure these gifts? www.stedna.org 13

Parish Life Commission www.stedna.org/parishlife What is Christian Family Movement (CFM)? Christian Family Movement is a network of parish families, in various stages of life, who meet to dis- cuss issues of relevance to today’s Christian families. Groups discuss a different issue each month intended to help gain a better understanding of our faith and how it affects our lives and our families. Members can participate to their level of comfort, whether they actively join the discussion or simply listen to other’s perspectives on topics. When does CFM meet? CFM at St. Edna begins in September each year and continues through June. Members of CFM are assigned to a small groups of 8 - 10 couples or individuals who meet the second Friday of each month in the Hurley Center or group member’s homes. Small group discussion are typically bookended by a social time with snacks and refresh- ments. New families are able to join through out the year but we encourage joining us beginning in September. CFM is the heart of St. Edna parish. We hope you will consider joining us! Kindly contact Jan or Bob O’Brien at janbobob@gmail.com by Thursday, August 22nd If you are new to our parish, and you are interested in becoming a member of St. Edna Parish, please join us next week in the Community Room. Human Concerns Commission www.stedna.org/humanconcerns Love Your Neighbor Love your neighbors as you love yourself. Sounds easy, but in today’s world, it is more difficult than ever. Few of us will ever see a man laying by the road in need of assistance as described in the parable of the Good Samaritan; however, that man is with us today. He can be seen in the homeless even in Arlington Heights. He may be unkempt, have dirty clothing, and carry his meager possessions on his bicycle. He may lack the ordinary social skills that you and I take for granted. Sometimes he panhandles and looks through trash cans for things he can use or sell for a few dollars. When the weather is warm, he sleeps outdoors. When it is cold and wet, he seeks shelter wherever he can find warmth and protection from the elements. That man is with us today even in Arlington Heights. He regularly visits the St. Edna’s food pantry. He works, but doesn’t earn enough to pay all his bills and put food on the table for his family. A few bags of food each month from the pantry makes life just a little easier. That man is with us today even in Arlington Heights. He or she may be one of the kids in the neighborhood who is just a little different. He or she may speak a different language, or the color of their skin may different. They may have a physical or mental disability. How are they treated at school and in the community? Who is our neighbor? Jesus answered this question with the story of the Good Samaritan. A Jew was robbed, beaten, and left for dead on the road from Jericho to Jerusalem. Two fellow Jewish passersby saw him lying there but offered no help. Then “a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, . . . and set him on his own beast of burden, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. Jesus then asks: Which of these three was neighbor?” Some day Jesus will ask us if and how we loved our neighbors, not only in Arlington Heights but in the far corners of the world - the homeless, the hungry, and those who were different. Do we pass by and ignore those who need assistance as the two individuals did in the story of the Good Samaritan, or do we get involved and help? At times, these issues seem overwhelming; however, if we act on a few thoughts from Saint Mother Teresa, we will see progress. “Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” “If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” Everyone can make an impact on hunger and poverty by participating in the monthly food collections at St. Edna. PLEASE BRING A BAG OF FOOD TO CHURCH NEXT WEEKEND, August 18, to restock the food pantries at St. Edna and St. James. Also, please make a contribution to St James using the gold envelopes each month. Human Concerns Commission www.stedna.org/humanconcerns The St. Edna Outreach to the Poor Ministry has a formed a subsidiary ministry called St. Edna Community Table (SECT) to welcome and serve all who seek nourishment and fellowship. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me” Matthew 25:35 The summer of 2014 was the first summer that St. Edna Community Table began the work of providing dinners once a month (in conjunction with other Arlington Heights area churches) to those in need. Our dinners typically serve between 45 and 65 guests, most of whom are homeless. Beginning with the summer season of 2015, we expanded to host dinners twice a month on the first and third Sunday evenings from May through September. We also warmly welcomed other St. Edna parish ministry groups to sponsor the dinners. We are doing the same this year, our sixth season. This was a wonderful way for our parish community to reach out in service to those who are less fortunate. Our three most recent dinners for the 2019 season went very well. Our guest counts are still pretty high. Many thanks to The Cake Box (1617 W Campbell St., Arlington Heights, IL 60005) for donating delicious baked good donations at each dinner. The following sponsoring ministries for July and Aug 4th also deserve heart-felt thanks: July 7th – Finance Council and College Ministry (Served 57 guests) July 21st – Christian Family Movement (CFM) (Served 60 guests) Aug 4th – Women of St. Edna (WOSE), Guild 4 (Served 51 guests) We ask for continued prayers as this ministry These are a few of the many wonderful grows. If you would like to help financially, the alms received on the third Sunday of most helpers for the SECT dinners. months benefit St. Edna Community Table. www.stedna.org 19
