2018 Global Leadership Summit William Penn University partnered with College Avenue Friends Church, on August 9 and 10, 2018, to host the Global Leadership Summit. As one of over 750 satellite host-sites worldwide, William Penn University was thrilled to be able to invite local businesses and churches, alum, faculty and staff from Penn to attend this event. Ninety-two people were able to get a unique blend of vision, inspiration, and practical skills that they could immediately apply into their lives and careers. The 2018 GLS was a two day event with thirteen different speakers. Each speaker talked from a different perspective on the values of what makes great leaders, or how you can make your company, school, or church grow and be successful. Speakers such as John Maxwell, Simon Sinek, Sheila Heen, and others truly added to the professional development atmosphere of the event. Leadership is one of the main staples here at William Penn University, and whenever we can host an event in which our University can learn and grow, alongside the local community, it is a great thing for both! We are already taking strides in the right direction to host this enlightening event again next year, and we look forward to seeing how it grows! English Professor Celebrates Published Poetry Collection Over a decade of creativity, writing, revision, deep thinking, and arrangement, a collection of poems written by Dr. Jared Pearce will be compiled in his upcoming publication, The Annotated Murder of One. What began in the summer of 2007, will come to fruition as Jared’s full poem collection was released in September 2018. The inspiration from the collection came from the song “A Murder of One” by the long-standing band, Counting Crows. From that song, Jared annotated the words and phrases to pen his poems. Vivid bird imagery is constructed within the collection’s work, as well as ghosts, flowers, dessert, and other humorous images. The poems play off of memories and history, songs, stories, vision, in addition to the relationship of love. The imagery displayed in the poems will be brought to life by Editor, Cosette Puckett. The designs will be kept minimal—black and white, drawn in graphite and ink on paper. Puckett is also designing borders that will be visible in each section, with each section having a divider and unique border design. Many of the poems within “The Annotated Murder of One” had previously been published in a poetry chapbook or in other literary publications. But this is Jared’s first full poetry publication, which is being prepared by Aubade Publishing. Aubade Publishing noted that Jared’s poems have been nominated for numerous accolades including Pushcart Prize, short listed for the Slate Roof and Blue Light Press competitions, and won the BYU Studies Prize in Poetry. “The Annotated Murder of One” is available for pre-sale online Amazon.com. You can speak with Jared or purchase his new collection during Homecoming at Authors and Artists on Saturday morning, October 13 in the Penn Activity Center. 4 BULLETIN Fall 2018
2018 Commencement Recap Family, friends, and employees alike gathered on Saturday, May 5, 2018 to celebrate the commencement of more than 300 William Penn students. Commencement speaker and alum, David Printy (’68), spoke to the graduating class about celebrating academic accomplishments and leadership upon graduation. Traditional, Online and Evening, and Master’s program students were congratulated by President John E.E. Ottosson and other members of the administration as they walked across the stage and received their diplomas. With a feeling of great pride and accomplishment, graduates proceeded outside where they were met by alumni from various classes and participated in the traditional Blue and Gold Ceremony. The service symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter in the graduate’s lives, as they join a prestigious and proud group of William Penn alumni. Congratulations again to the William Penn University Class of 2018! Leaders Speak Series Slated to Continue William Penn University prides itself on the development of leadership in our students—it doesn’t typically stop in the classroom or on the court. The Digital Communication Program at WPU promotes the sharing of ideas, provides opportunities for skills development, and encourages meaningful conversations through the Leaders Speak Series. The Leaders Speak Series allows leaders from a variety of fields and all walks of life to bring their diverse ideas, engage community members, and provide practical experiences for students. Digital Communication students are involved in the event promotion, planning, and live broadcast of the series. Since the initiative’s inception in 2015, the program has hosted numerous notable leaders, including Senator Bernie Sanders, Magistrate Issaka Moussa of the Republic of Niger, and Eva Hakansson, the world’s fastest female motorcycle rider. Qualified and knowledgeable speakers have been a staple in every season’s presentations. The presentations are always free and open to the public. To watch past presenters and see any upcoming news about the initiative, visit www.wmpenn.edu/leaders. 5
Renovating A Legendary Landmark Standing tall and proud on the southeast corner of campus lies a sleepy chapel that once held the masses and stores memories from years ago. William Penn’s historic Spencer Chapel was finished in 1923, but since the early 2000s it has lain dormant, due to the construction of the George Daily Auditorium and a state of disrepair. During the last two decades, other buildings on the Oskaloosa campus were also erected, such as the Penn Activity Center, Musco Technology Center, and new dormitories. The chapel remained still as those buildings rose. But now, Spencer Chapel is getting an opportunity to shine again as it welcomes newcomers to campus for the first time, as well as returning students and cherished alumni. A series of interior and exterior renovations have been mapped out for Spencer Chapel. Alumni, students, staff, and faculty all look forward to the unveiling of the restored historic building. President John Ottosson is looking forward to the renovation, stating, “Spencer Chapel has a lot of history and opening it again will contribute to today’s student experience. We want to return it to the point where we can use it for on-campus concerts, convocations, and other events.” On campus in Oskaloosa, Iowa since the 1920s, Spencer Chapel has quite a storied history. The main level has served as a chapel, auditorium, concert hall, and more—for students, faculty, staff, and local community members. The lower level has traditionally been used for more modern uses. It once housed a skating rink, a two-lane bowling alley, the campus bookstore, and a small cafe for students. 6 BULLETIN Fall 2018
The first phase of restoration came in the fall of 2017 when the exterior brick work was tended to and new windows were installed as the weather was still comfortable. Furthermore, steps were taken to strip harmful matter that had invaded the vacant chapel including mold, asbestos, and lead. The upcoming phases of renovation include the interior of the chapel, such as classrooms, elevators, and bathrooms. The old auditorium will get an upgrade as well. Reviving the chapel back to its historic integrity, while making the building up to code and usable is important to William Penn University. The seats in Spencer Chapel—originally installed in 1921—will eventually be replaced and the new seats will be able to comfortably seat up to 400 people. The building will also mix the old with the new. The main level will be returned to its historical uses and be the home of musicals, convocations, chapel services, and other events with large attendance. President Ottosson said, “The lower level will most likely have classrooms and offices—we are still finalizing the plans for this area.” After renovations are completed, the main floor of Spencer Chapel will host annual events such as convocations, musicals, worship service, weddings, and other possible events. Classrooms and a conference room are expected to be utilized in the basement of the building. 7
S pencer Memorial Chapel B eautiful in its colonial simplicity as it commands an imposing position atop a hillock near the entrance to the Penn college campus the Spencer Memorial Chapel, the gift of Mrs. Mary E. Spencer to the college to honor the memory of her departed husband, Harry L. Spencer was formally dedicated with appropriate services Sunday afternoon, February 13, 1923. The chapel has just been completed following eighteen months of building activity. It is one of the finest college buildings of the kind in the land and is completely equipped by the donor. It is typically colonial in architecture, fire proof, and the auditorium will comfortably seat a thousand people. The building and equipment represents an outlay of more than $100,000. Dr. Henry Edwin McGrew, the president of Penn College, made the dedicatory address, expressing the deep-felt appreciation of the school for the gift, eulogizing Mr. Spencer in whose honor the chapel was erected, paying tribute to the generous spirit which prompted the building and tracing the rise of the structure from its inception to its completion. A number of persons appeared for brief expressions of appreciation. Captain W. H. Keating, representing the Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce, spoke on behalf of the business community. He paid a fitting tribute to H. L. Spencer and emphasized the importance of Penn College to the community . Keating stressed, especially the appreciation of the business men of the city, that Mrs. Spencer had felt willing to make her contribution to a worthy an institution in our own city. Excerpt from the Oskaloosa Herald, Daily vol. 36, No. 143 Memorial to Husband The Harry L. Spencer Memorial Chapel, recently completed, was a gift to Penn College, Oskaloosa, by the widow, Mary E. Spencer, as a memorial to her husband. It is of red brick, with tile roof, and cost, including full equipment, $100,000. The design throughout is typically colonial. The construction is practically fire proof. The audience room, furnished with opera chairs, provides comfortable seating capacity for 1000 persons. With the new chapel added, Penn College has a half million dollar plant – buildings, equipment, 35 acre campus and athletic field. Personal Message of Mrs. Mary E. Spencer at Dedication of Spencer Memorial Chapel ‘One of the greatest pleasures of my life has been the building of this chapel in the memory of my dear husband who had for a long time had a deep interest in the College and in the up-building of our young people and the erection of a chapel had been the subject of fireside conversation. The greatest desire of my heart is that there will ever be a gathering within the walls but that at least one heart will be touched as to lead it the cleaner and brighter pathway and thus contribute to the up-building of the world. May the Lord be with you and bless you, make his face to shine upon you and give you peace and pleasure in the noble work you are doing.’ 8 BULLETIN Fall 2018 Oskaloosa Daily Herald, Monday, February 19, 1923
Spencer Memorial Chapel Million Dollar Challenge F or the last five years, William Penn University has been involved in building on the strengths of our heritage, while keeping an eye keenly on the needs of the future. Building upon a base of strength in the form of foundational values of the early Society of Friends, the university has embarked on a course of action focused on meeting real-world needs of students in a rapidly changing global context. This action is grounded in innovation, entrepreneurship, quality, and a clear-eyed view of the competitive academic marketplace. The renovations we propose for Spencer Chapel will allow us to continue to serve the community and campus with a medium-sized auditorium, available for events, and classrooms to better serve our students. Bringing Spencer Chapel back into full-use on a daily basis will breathe life into this landmark. Through our combined gift support, this legendary landmark will receive the blessing of its long overdue renovation. We have a donor couple who have generously offered a $1M challenge to complete Spencer Chapel. The overall project is $2M and they are committing to half of that! It’s exciting to know that Spencer Chapel is now receiving some much needed attention. Do you remember your assigned seat for chapel? Well, those seats from the early 1920s are going to be replaced. You can have your name engraved on a new chair for a gift commitment of $1,500. Alumni are already reserving the opportunity to leave their legacy on a chair in Spencer Chapel. Take a moment to reflect. Let’s honor our past and make Spencer Chapel happen. “Though we are so conscious of the Christian witness in Palestine, the beautiful mosque, one of the world’s truly magnificent buildings, dominates the scene. Incorrectly called the Mosque of Omar, because of Omar’s early connection with Jerusalem and the Muslim country for 1,300 years. The Noble Sanctuary is built on the temple area, but when Muslims came, the area was the city dump heap, and it was the Christian Patriarch who called Omar’s attention to the site, for there was a tradition that it had been a holy place long before the Hebrews came. ...[The fact that] Omar himself helped clear away the accumulations of the centuries, and Abdul Malek Ibn Marwan made it the heart of his beautiful sanctuary, is clear evidence of the reverence the Muslims had for the Rock.” – Christina Jones, The Untempered Wind, Forty Years in Palestine 1975 There are four large and extremely meaningful pieces light, were a gift of Labib B. A th le ti c P er fo rm a nc e P ro gr a m at William Penn “We want the life lessons of hard work and dedication, attention to detail, commitment, and being a great teammate to resonate with the athletes so we can have that positive impact on them,” says Coach Jon Haugen, Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Performance and Student Experience. In addition to their integral work with WPU athletic teams, Jon and his staff have been working with area high school teams in the weight room, focusing on three goals: to improve performance, reduce the likelihood of injuries, and positively impact the students. “When they learn those lessons, what they achieve, goes well beyond athletic success”. The dedicated Athletic Performance team, comprised of Graduate Assistants and Fellowship Coaches, is currently working with Oskaloosa, Pella, Pella Christian, Lynnville- Sully, and North Mahaska High Schools. One WPU staff member is on site at each of these schools for 10-16 hours per week working with various athletic teams. Staff work with teams either before or after school hours, spending the remainder of their time on the WPU Oskaloosa campus, working with Statesmen teams and individual players. During that time players learn the fundamentals of strength and conditioning while understanding their responsibility to teammates and coaches. The Athletic Performance coaches and staff have made this program a priority in their career. “They perform at a high level each day to make sure each high school is taken care of and their wants and needs are met. We have developed a great network of William Penn Athletic Performance coaches that have gone on and continued having great success in life,” says Jon. Through the passion for the program’s success, Jon has been able to organize his staff and schedule the appropriate amount of people to consistently be at both the high school facilities and in the Ron Randleman Fitness Center. This gives both athletic programs ample opportunity to grow and learn. But this involvement not only benefits the high school players, but also gives WPU students the opportunity to become better professionals, coaches, and leaders as they work side-by-side with staff members at the Jon has five Athletic Performance staff members to facilities during the school year and even manage and train athletes on 19 different teams at WPU. 12 BULLETIN Fall 2018

By building these strong bonds with the schools involved in the program increases the likelihood of success in these students’ lives and the opportunities they will have upon graduation. There have been and continue to be numerous individuals involved with the area high school in the Athletic Performance program at WPU. Coupling the work they do with collegiate teams at WPU and the experience they’ve gained through coaching high school students, has attributed to their success after the Graduate Assistant program. Corbin Loubert, who has completed the program at Penn, is now an Athletic Performance coach for the NBA Developmental League-China and Brandon Sardine, has recently accepted a position with the Chinese Olympic Skateboarding Team as a Performance Coach. Both are examples of recent success stories from the WPU Athletic Performance Program. Recent interns like Ashley Miller at the University of Iowa, Cory Fitzjarrell at The Citadel (South Carolina), and Dakota Herman and Scott Simpson are both at Cressey Performance- Massachusetts having all been products of this program. Through the years, hundreds of alumni and friends have become members. Alumni and friends extend their commitment and generosity to the university beyond their lifetimes and for generations to come. Their participation helps position the university for the future by providing scholarships for students and strengthening our endowment. We are deeply grateful for those members who in their life indicated to us their estate intent, we are humbled by those individuals who have made estate plans for William Penn which we learn of upon their demise. We are blessed by all those who give or intend to give beyond their lifetime.
